Having recently fallen in love with a Diamondback Ascent and discovered r/xbiking, I'd love a tire recommendation to run under fenders (thus the size limit). My current thought is to get a set of Schwalbe Big Bens in 2.15 but was concerned they be tough to handle offroad. My use case is bike path, commuting, trailer pulling, exploration of horse paths and some light trails. Some xbiking favorites are Schwalbe Table Top, and Maxxis DTH but the Table Top seems somewhat aggressive for pavement.

I'd love to get a fast road tire with generous volume like Rat Trap Pass but a slick offroad (and an expensive one at that) will probably not fly.

Anyone have any direct experience?

Since BMX has devolved into paved berms, something like the Tioga Powerblock (26 x 2.1) may be a good choice. I raced BMX on similar by odyssey bitd. https://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=54218

great thread. I love the maxis hookworms. but I also am searching for a tubeless compatible alternative. Town and Country looks awesome too, have to grab a pair

I have 47-559 Conti Town and Country on my Big Dummy because I really don't want a flat on that bike :-) They make a 55-559 version, it weighs 730g. The Speedking Racesport I mentioned above in 55-559 is 410g. One is a performance tire, one is a bombproof tire. And they ride pretty different.

Can you give me a mini-review of them? I was looking at them for a similar MTB-->gravel conversion. (And where did you buy yours? They seem hard to find, or way cheaper from Germany.)

What does your off road look like? Rocky, loose, muddy? Then yeah, maybe not. Otherwise they're pretty nice on trails and fire roads.

I’ve got’em on my ‘97 klein pulse race commuter with solid fork. Been a bullet proof commuter for years.

I looked back and I bought them from Wiggle a bit over three years ago. Now I only see them in 26" from German vendors like bike-discount.de.**Maybe I should buy another pair?
I was looking for a light tire that rolls well on the road but works adequately in the sandy trails here. I use the Litespeed as a get-around bike more than a strictly recreational rider, so I may be going to a meeting or to work or to a film and my route may be a combo of paved roads and trails. This tire is great for that. They look good after a bit over three years of use, too.

Wow, lots to look at. Thanks gang.

Thinking back to the riding I've done before on a tricross with literally Schwalbe marathons on it, just slight siped tread, I'll probably be fine with a similar tire on this bike. Not sure about the GK as it looks quite aggressive for pavement use.

I did a ride last summer with my commuting setup on Schwalbe Marathon Plus 1.75”

They worked well enough on gravel, maybe not the best on loose downhills but I was doing an exploration ride more than a race/workout.

Hookworms are crazy heavy. I've been very pleased with my DTH, but there's not a lot of knob. Fine on hardpack, but nothing wet/loose please.

I took a chance on a deal on some Conti Double Fighter 3s since 26x1.9 is a good size for my fender setup. Seemed like 26” terrenos to me. We’ll see if I ever get them. Postal Service is sitting one of my packages already.
