I am seeing the Garmin 1030 discounted 33% from numerous retailers, down to $399 for the head unit. This is about the price of the Garmin 830. So I have to wonder if a new model is coming out to replace the 1030. Anybody hear anything on the subject?

I haven’t heard anything specific on that but did pick up two Varia 510 rear lights this morning for $99 each. Don’t know if that price is the new normal or what.

Also, the 1030 rocks and I love mine but have wondered what the next generation could bring to the table. Might find out sooner rather than later.

The 830 is a better unit hands down unless you need a big screen. Faster proc, better battery life, some updated features too.

I loved my 1000 and couldn’t think of anything else I needed and then the 1030 came along, my 1000 eventually died in the rain ...I tried a wahoo ...and eventually bought a 1030 which is a crazy good improvement on the 1000. I’m really happy with my 1030 but I’m sure the marketing folks will make the new and improved 1030 x% better so I’ll want it.

Where did you find the Varia at that price? Thanks

Where did you find the Varia at that price? Thanks
I got them through Amazon, the order was fulfilled by HeartRateMonitorsUSA. Just a minute ago I went to the “reorder this item” page and it shows them at $129 each. Still a very good price compared to the usual $180-200.

I accidentally bought two 1030s earlier today, so if someone wants one, $399 plus a bit o' ship and it's yours when it gets to me.....assuming they are sold out most places now..

Wonder if most Garmin stuff is on sale currently? I saw a PSA post somewhere else about Varia (rear unit) being on sale everywhere for $130 (35% off or so).

anyone know how the real-world battery life compares between the 1030 and the 5/830?

i bought a 530 recently and it absolutely blew me away with its battery life...was on pace for 24hrs. (33% left after 16hrs)

was thinking of buying a back-up unit for a long ride i have planned june12-july? and another 530/830 seemed like the obvious choice but now maybe a 1030 would be cool...any intel is appreciated!

Why not just buy a small battery pack and charge it while riding? Unlike the older units (like with the old Edge 500 i used to have) I think they allow charging while using them concurrently (currently use an Edge 520 and last time I check it allows charging while using it). Much cheaper than a 2nd unit. You can get large capacity 10,000mah or higher battery packs for cheaper than a latex tube these days.

I have a 1030 and I don’t see it going for 24 hours. I did a compare earlier today on Garmin’s site and it claims the 530, 830, and 1030 all have battery life up to 20 h which seems plausible. If you are gonna be out 18 h or more I’d probably buy the battery pack. If you are using features like navigation that are battery hogs I’d also probably cart around the extra battery because not having navigation when you need it sucks!

the back up isnt in case i run out of battery (i have a variety of different size battery packs i bring with me as needed), its in case one malfunctions or gets broken somehow.
ill be using these for the tour divide this year, redundancy in navigational equipment is key...

I rode for approximately 4 hours today with nav and mapping turned on. I used 10% battery in that time.

I would bet that Garmin is coming out with a 1030 replacement - otherwise why have a big discount on the current flagship model?

I have a 1000 and am thinking of pulling the trigger on a 1030 and then selling my 1000. The 1000 has been great - no complaints about it. But it would be nice to have a longer lasting battery and some of the newer features.

Adding trailforks maps and the longer battery life was all i needed to hear when i bought the 530.

So, if they are coming out with a replacement for the 1030 what kind of new features do you think they would incorporate in the new one? ??

Restarting post

My garmin 1000 is acting up and I thinking replacing it after a good number of years of service. Is there any news of when/if a new model is coming out and what the upgrades might be?

I wrote Garmin to inquire about the cost of an exchange unit because the power button on my Edge 1000 failed. If you google it, it's a common problem that the rubber button will tear as the unit ages. To my surprise, they offered a $100 "good will" unit exchange on the Edge 1000, or 20% off on a new unit with my old unit as a trade-in.

I realize I could've bought a new case back with the button on Ebay for $30 and replaced it myself, but I figured after 5 years it was worth $100 to get a completely reconditioned unit, including a new battery. If your Edge 1000 is failing, i'd get in touch and inquire about a good will repair.

So today got an email from Bike Tires Direct touting the new Garmin 1030 Plus, and a 130 Plus. But when I went to their website via the link in the email there was a banner stating the offer was no longer available. Something is up, maybe a 1030 Plus is coming and BTD jumped the gun. Here is the email text about the new Garmins:

IDK. I upgraded to an 830, from a couple of 800s last year.

At this point in my cycling, all I really track is distance, instant cadence, HR over time, average speed, route.

I could probably be on a Garmin 2, if that were a real model. :)

Give some thought to what you really need in your data...

My guess is that the 1030 Plus is just a minor update, probably including the mtb & trail maps that are included in the 830 unit.

Seems a little ridiculous that they launched a whole "new" model just to add a few new features that could have probably just been a firmware update...

Interesting. What’s new on the 130 plus or was there no detail?

its got the faster 530/830 processor which will make it much faster + all the other updates which I agree they should give the 1000 but garmin is doing garmin and trying to make a few more bucks. Oh it also has double the memory and better battery life (this is probably because of the proc and not a bigger battery)

I called Bike Tires Direct and they said someone hit the send button a couple of days early!!! So details will be available in a few days. Like some of you have said, probably nothing huge but even new hardware might be worthwhile. Or get a regular 1030 at a reduced price?

I’ve owned a 1030 for years and I’ve never run out of battery beverage. On the longest, all-day rides. While traveling, I’ve used it a couple days in a row without recharging for rides in the neighbors-hood of 3 hours. And as a practical matter, it recharges with a ubiquitous micro-USB cable. I keep one in my car that I can plug into a lighter, and I a charging hub And various canles to recharge my phone and other electronics when I travel. Unless you are doing marathon rides that last multiple days without breaks, charging shouldn’t be an issue. If you’re worried, buy a power bank from Anker. https://www.anker.com/products/variant/powercore-5000/A1109011

Are you sure that's not the ++ Ungood model?

I think I had texts coming through to my 830 for one ride. I thought the text went away too fast to be useful and it was from CVS, so I was glad when it stopped working.

i actually am unable to hear the beep since my hearing issues are with high frequencies. when i was riding yesterday and navigating the route with my 1030 one of my cycling buds said he could hear every beep and it was bugging him. i think i was off course so maybe it was beeping a lot but i could not hear it.

now i can buy the Plus, turn up the volume, and drive him crazier.

i will actually live my 1030 and turn off the beep to keep the friendship.

Not to derail the POST but I switched from a Garmin 800 to using my Samsung S8 phone a year ago ... with the rwgps app. Works flawlessly for my daily 2 to 3 hour rides. If I keep the screen on, the power is probably good for about 6 hours of riding. If I just let it record the ride without the screen on I use 20% of power in a 2 to 3 hour ride. There is an option to leave the screen off but have it wake up for turns if you are using it for navigating a pre-set route. If I did more marathon type rides I'd probably buy an external battery unit such as the Anker that someone posted.

When I come back from my ride I click Finish, give the ride a short name and save it. By the time I can get my bike shoes off and go up a flight of stairs the ride is on the rwgps web site (of course this could work with Strava or other services). The screen on the Samsung is great if you actually are navigating where you have to look at the map.

Why have two devices when you only need one?
