Do you want us to give Jeff Gillooly a call?

Here is what my point is.

It says in this article that if TJ declines his spot (and he will) that I will be on the Worlds's Team. That just doesn't make sense as only 5 US riders are allowed to race.

Did I read this article wrong?

atmo they shouldn't even bother/consider with folks that
are not 'cross-centric. timmy has road committments, and
i read that wicks wants no part of a eurocross lifestyle (did
anyone else read that?). folks should not be there just to
take up space, eve if it is on their own nickel. usac should
focus on guys that are young, and hungry, and are willing
to support the discipline, rather than simply race the season
that is between seasons atmo.

I agree with Atmo. If some of the qualifiers don't want to go, the spot should be given to someone who has more than proven his mettle: fsrthnu.

5 spots + 1 Alternate

3 Automatic

Ryan Trebon (Kona), Tim Johnson (Cyclocrossworld.com) and Barry Wicks (Kona) met the requirements for automatic qualification

That's 3

3 additional named....2 go + an alternate

European-based pro Jonathan Page (Morgan Blue), Erik Tonkin (Kona) and Tristan Schouten (Trek-Volkswagen) earned the three remaining discretionary spots

Assuming Johnson does not attend, his spot will be filled by Schouten, who was picked as the team's first alternate.

So you only go if one of the 5 in bold (in addition to TJ decide not to attend.

Even if wicks doesn't wanna race full time in Belgium, he is still one of the best American domestic racers right? Isn't that what a trip to Worlds is about?

The way I understand it is the automatic qualifiers "have" to be named. Therefore, even if it's known in advance that TJ isn't going, he still must be named.

Given that all of these guys go on their own nickel (thanks USA cycling), the alternate doesn't travel unless one of the automatic or descretionary picks opts out.

That is my interpretation as well. Only five will participate. Mr. Johnson, because "International regulations require a governing body to announce the names of automatic qualifiers" was "named" to the team, opted out, then replaced w/ a discretionary alternate. Mr. Spinelli is next in line, and I wish him good luck!
