Friend sent me a picture of her cassette which failed while the bike was on the trainer. Looks like one cog came off the carrier - rivet failure? Is this common? Good source for replacement cog? Should I just order a new cassette? If 10 speed I'd get a loose cog Tiagra but it appears 105 is still the entry level 11 speed group.

If its not older than 3 years, Shimano should warranty that

Otherwise, time for a new cassette and potentially a chain

No idea on age. Her husband probably bought it new and he's been dead for nearly 2 years. The replacement cogs don't seem to be commonly available. I may just get a BBB cassette from the UK ($26 shipped) as the wheel is only used on the trainer.

Still interested to know if others have seen this failure.

Aren't only the first three riveted together? Or was that old stuff?

I believe these failures were not uncommon (relative to how these things go) on the first generation of 9000 series cassettes.

It's a 12-25. I'm guessing that it has two carriers: one for 19/21 and one for 23/25.

These types of failures were somewhat common on first generation Dura Ace 9000 cassettes. Shimano made a design change to lessen creaking and improve reliability: https://bikerumor.com/2014/06/06/shimano-makes-running-change-to-dura-ace-9000-cassettes-to-eliminate-creaking/

Interested to know what fails. Seems to me that if the carrier arms break, both cogs would be flopping around but still riveted together. Guessing that in the case at hand either the rivet heads or the opposite end of the rivets failed. Lightweight (hollow?, AL?) rivets perhaps? I'll see it eventually but it may be a week or two before that happens.

Don’t get a non-Shimano replacement. I replaced a non-Shimano on my trainer with a 105 and it’s much better.

There’s no 12-25 unfortunately in the 105-level but it’s much smoother than the non-Shimano.

Super common with early 9000 cassettes

It also happened to me with one of the later carriers. I moved to the Ultegra cassette. It only weighs a little more and is supposed to be more reliable.
