Hi, has anyone run a straight diameter fork like a Columbus Minimal 1 1/8" on a frame with a 44mm head tube? Looking at Chris King site I see that the headsets that fit on a 44mm head tube are built for a tapered steer tubes. Which would be fine if Columbus only made the Minimal in a tapered version :(

Thanks.

Is the King solution for this still made?

Yep according to the King website they are still for sale:

Columbus Minimal fork is known to be a good match for “traditional” smaller tube frames. Dunno, may look pretty unbalanced with a 44mm headtube.

I'm guessing he wants to use what he already has rather than discarding a perfectly usable part. It will perform just fine.

Cane Creek will have a similar headset solution.

No doubt on either account.

I'd bet a 6-pack that the fork gets installed, then removed because it looks funny.

Yeah, it'll likely be a fine fork. ….for a different bike

Agreed. It'll work fine, it'll look weird.

Yes this is exactly why I was hoping to use the minimal fork - I already have it. I did notice that there doesn’t seem to be any tapered forks with the traditional bend, they are all straight blade which I don’t like the aesthetic of.

Maybe the question I should ask is: does anyone make a tapered 1 1/8” - 1 1/2” curved fork? I only see straight blade tapered forks offered.

Seven cycles tapered fork is gently curved. Here's mine.

Columbus Grammy--discontinued, but you may be able to track one down. THM Scapula if you want to pay a lot.

That is exactly the fork I would want. BTW, while Googling for Columbus Grammy, I came across this - https://www.gambacicli.com/en/columbus-best-of-tapered-carbon-matt-ud-road-fork.html

Seems like a sketchy site, I wouldn't buy from there but it was curious to me.

Which headset was the frame designed for: Zero stack or external cup? You’ll be boosting the front end up by 10-15mm depending on make and model using an external lower cup (if it was designed for zero stack).

Hi pbarry, it's a zero stack (zs44/28.6 | ec44/40) that has a Chris King Inset 7 headset. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by it would boost the front end, could you explain?

he's just saying that putting an external lower cup (if needed to accommodate the fork you want to use) can add 15mm to the stack since you are running zero stack now.

Gotcha, makes sense. Thanks.

Thanks! I'm really happy with it so far. Clear roads in Maine mean I can start putting some miles on it. Long reach VO Grand Cru brakes give it lots of versatility.
