View Full Version : super minimalist fenders - Ass Savers?

Hello all,

I bought a new adventure bike (Kona Sutra - photos forthcoming) that has 2.1" knobby tires on it. As I plan to use this off-road, I dont want to put my usual SKS type full coverage fenders on it.

Knowing that I am sacrificing functionality without these fenders, what options do I have for simple, lightweight ones that will deflect 50% of the grit?

Ass Savers is the logical choice, and the front one looks fine to me, but those big long rear ones that rest just above the tire are awful looking and would get smacked constantly.

Are the saddle mounted Ass Savers effective?

Are there other brands that mount closer to the tire that arent as ugly and stick-outy?

Can one use the front ones for suspension forks on the rear end of a bike?

If you hav a photo of clean looking ones, I would appreciate it (for the rear; I am at peace with the front).

Thanks!

I've used ass savers on a road bike in the summer; they help as long as they stay attached (had one fly of on a descent and disappear). Better than nothing but I don't think ideal for daily use.

Check this out. It may not be wide enough but it works well if it is.

I just found these the other day and they look awesome. They roll up so they can be stashed in a bag when not needed.

Those ones that hang down from the downtube wreak havoc on my eyes. Just awful!

The barfly one looks nice, but I think its too narrow for MTB tires.

Yes, these arent for commuting - they're for keeping the giant muddy strip off my back when out on trails, etc.

I had an ass saver and I lost it because it fell off mid ride somewhere. It worked okay for light puddles on road (think riding the day after rain), but overall the coverage was about as good as a medium sized saddle bag. It wasn't particularly useful for riding on a rainy day, or on muddy trails... and, of course, it fell off.

It might still be a decent choice for racers looking for a tiny bit of protection without slowing themselves down, but I wouldn't think it's worth it on a heavy gravel/allroad bike.

How about the SKS seatpost mounted ones?

Check Crud, they might have something you are looking. A UK company. I saw them on GCN.

I use an Ass Saver on my gravel/commuter bike and the fat size version on my fat bike. In both cases, it does the job of keeping my ass dry. If it's that sloppy, i'm probably wearing a water-resistant shell on top. This is Colorado, so I didn't want a full-time fender setup like someone in the PNW might. I guess the looks leave something to be desired, never really thought about it before.

I also lost my Ass Savers during a ride. It was nice while it lasted! Maybe some tape or a zip tie wouldn't hurt.

Hate to say it, but full fenders are worth it every second you are riding on wet roads. Those behind you will thank you too.

The tiny ones that clip on or attach with zip ties just don’t usually work all that well.

My fenders provide exceptional coverage and after the time invested getting them fitted right they are on and off the bike in 10 minutes.

Just my $.02

I have probably found about 20 ass savers.

Destroying my eyeballs! I think I hate anything attached to the Seatpost. It just looks so wrong.

Nothing is appealing but the Ass Savers, but clearly those aren’t ideal.

As far as full coverage fenders go, I have no problem with them (they’re on the commuter I ride today!) but this Sutra will be ridden in mud more than groomed trails or roads. They’ll get mangled and/or mangle me.

I feel ya, on the same hunt.

I currently use the fendor bendor. Looks the same as the images in the link below. Doesn't move around, doesn't rub on tires, doesn't look that terrible irl, does keep your back dry.

Anyone else find a front fender non effective?

Puddles get sprayed in a width/steam directly onto your feet. Unless you do the Yosemite Sam 5" mud flap about touching the ground. ;)

After a few decades, I just use a seat post paddle clamp on to keep the spray from the back wheel off my back. And either slow way down for the deep front excursions at speed or get wet... Front fender never seemed to accomplish more than it created in some issue or the other for me otherwise.

I do wanna try those foldy orangy blingy things I think, now I saw them... Why do these threads always cost money?

Can't you just see it on a lefty Cado All road bike though? :bike:

Gotta have a deep flap, no question. Without this your feet will get wet and the spray goes straight into the drivetrain. Doesn’t look great, but very effective.

I like the Planet Bike speed EZ. Takes some time to initially set up on your bike. But once you do, you can take on or off in under 5 minutes.
