Long story short i'm interested if anyone here has added some reinforcement to their road shoes? Basically, i'd like to add the soft rubber piece from my vr90's to my empire SLX's as the toe is the only piece that usually shows any wear on my road shoes.

DIY?
Cobbler?
Just ride em?

Just ride them, and don't fret over the aesthetics.

IMHO putting a rubber toe cap on the SLX would certainly affect the aesthetics of them!

just ride 'em as is!

Ride em. I scuffed the toe of a nice pair of Sidis in a crash a few years ago. I just kept using them. Looked poor but I saw it as a battle scar.

How about masking the area in question and spraying a few layers of clear rubber sealant?

You can buy that plastic piece that comes with some contact cement at Walmart. My kid was a high school pitcher and he would drag his toe on the follow-through. I put the toe caps on his right shoe and they stayed on through two seasons. Not aesthetically pleasing, but black shoe/black cap.

Toes are pretty much the only area to show wear on my cycling shoes, too.
It is puzzling because none of my other shoes exhibit that same kind of wear.

It’s clear and it can be peeled off so it can be replaced...

Back in the day, playing baseball you could buy Kangaroo leather to go over the toe of baseball shoes, not sure they still make that.

I’m sure a shoe repair guy (cobbler) and I do mean cobbler could come up with something more “elegant”

Shoe goo and smooth it over with an ice cube. Black or clear.

How many grams will it add to the shoe? ;)

I bought black leather scraps from eBay and glued them on with barge cement. It’s super easy and looks great.

Well done! What’s the material? Barge cement.
