So I’m freshening up a bike with new paint and coming into the 21at century with a component upgrade from 10 to 11-speed. I’ve got all the 11V components EXCEPT the crank and chain rings. Do any of you fine folk have the definitive answer to my question: Can I use a Shimano 10V crank and rings with otherwise 11V components? I have a Shimano R8000 braze-on front der using the correct sized Shimano band adapter to fit the seat tube. I also have a Shimano 11V chain.

Will i be able to run 11-speed using my existing 10-speed crank, chain rings and bottom bracket? Or am I going to have to buy a new crankset and bottom bracket?

Yes.

I have two bikes in this configuration. They run fine.

It's getting increasingly lonely, here in the 9-spd club.

Good thing I have lots of spare components hoarded away for future use.

Yes, use the 10s crank. Adjust fder well...You 'may' get some light tickling of the chain on the big ring when in small ring and small-ish cogs but don't ride there.

HA, I have '12s' on my Moots..2 in the front, 6 in the rear(freewheel)...

I recently took my Moots RSL from DA 10 spd to DA 9170 11 spd. I was advised to use 11 spd rings because of the slight difference in spacing, but also told it really depends on which 10spd rings you are using as to how well they will work. At the end of the day my old cranks had a scored spindle and I had to get new ones anyway.

Note that if you have an FD clamp, they are different for 10spd and 11spd Shimano FDs.

I'd also replace the BB while you are at it because newer Shimano BB's are relatively cheap for Ultegra or Dura Ace (the latest 11 speed versions). We're talking less than $20 or so for the Ultegra version. Unless your existing crank is the previous Octalink verison that is then that is a bit more expensive to replace than the newer versions.

If I remember correctly, cassette spacing with Shimano 10 & 11s is the same, hence the longer freehub body for 11s. I can't recall if chain spacing is the same with 10 & 11s, but only if the 11s chain is significantly narrower than a 10s chain would it be problematic. If your 10s rings are worn then you have more room to play with.

That's not quite right. The center-to-center spacing for Shiamno 11spd is narrower than for 10spd (which was narrower than 9spd, which was narrower than 8spd, which was narrower than 7spd ...).
