The first band I saw live, with a ticket I purchased myself.

I'm glad I've listened to his music for so long. I'm overdue to read his other works.

RIP.

Yep.

Hmm, I'm thinking easily top three of all drummers, ever.
It was heart breaking to hear he wasn't going to tour anymore because of tendon pain. This is worse.

Just watched THIS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWRMOJQDiLU) and it was through my Yamaha receiver attached to some polk speakers. To listen to this on laptop speakers or Apple pods is a sin.

Was never a huge RUSH fan, but whenever anyone asked about Neil it's simple "he's your favorite drummers drummer."

Sad indeed. Only 67.

Neil Peart was an iconic musician. How unfortunate. :(

Damn......my youngest son just told me.

A huge fan of Rush, and saddened by the news, I hope he's at peace. Prayers for his family.

So sad to read the news today. An all time favorite of mine. I was too poor to see any of the tours in the 80's but made up for it by seeing every one in the Bay Area later on.

I always wanted that 6' Tama Banner of his drums on the lake.

He was a big touring cyclist before that...wrote a book about a month long ride across West Africa.

Such an amazing and tragic life he lived.

Glad I saw their last tour.

If you haven’t watched the Rush doc, Beyond the Lighted Stage, do so...one of the best music docs you’ll see.

Neil liked to escape the touring scene while on the road and would bicycle between towns when possible and on off days. Later it was motorcycling. A very accomplished drummer and a thoughtful, intelligent man.

Good interview here from 2012.

I am just numb. I think I will go cry some more. Few people have made such an impact on me - may he rest in peace.

Neil, more than anyone I can think of, helped this outcast feel a sense of belonging. Particularly in a time in my life when I was really questioning where that was. I know there are millions of others similarly impressed by him. This is really such an unusual feat given his famous aversion to attention.
Life did not appear to be easy for him. I hope that he can now rest in peace.
Thank you, Neil.

4 years to the day that David Bowie left us. I am glad I got to see Rush's last tour. It d really cool the way they did it. The concert started off with them using their old vintage original equipment and progressed to the end with their modern stuff. By that time Neil's drum set was colossal.

I remember Neil recounting the story of a festival show in Toronto about 15 years ago. He was finishing his warm-up and about to go on stage when he saw an older guy at the side of the stage smiling at him and mouthing some words.

Neil had his plugs in and couldn’t hear what the guy was saying. It was annoying, but the guy kept talking so Neil pulled out an ear plug and asked if he could help. The guy repeated: “Oh hi. I’m Charlie Watts. I’d like to watch you play if that’s alright.” Of course, it was.

I've recanted one of his quotes over the years.
"Adventures suck when you're having them."
It makes me smile every time.
Cancer sucks. But I'm grateful that we have his volumes of work as his legacy.
Gonna ride the BMW and have a toast of the MaClellan later today.

Though I was not a big fan, I listened, liked, appreciated, respected.
Saw the documentary a few years ago and was struck by the absence of the typical drama, craziness, excess, self-destructiveness. I'm sure there was some but I dont recall ever hearing reports of that kind of thing like you did with other bands.
NP was an interesting guy for sure, aside from his virtuosity.

I feel the same way...especially as a percussionist. But I guess that was the style of Rush. It's comforting to know he could play so many styles and play them tastefully (ie not overplay).

One thing I think we could all agree on is his chops! And sense of time. YOW~!

How he switches timing - ghost beats - all of it... Never too much. One of the best of all time (pun intended) where the top are all equal. What sets Neil apart is that he is more than just a percussionist. His lyrics, study of philosophy, writing (I need to read his books...), dedication to study of his art... all of it. A more influential introvert would be hard to find.
