View Full Version : OT: Will there be a real winter this year in the Northeast?

I like being able to ride without bundling up, but I do enjoy cold weather, and even snow, and I wonder if we'll get any of it this year. It's been feeling more like early November than early January.

Meanwhile, Norway had its warmest ever January day, at 66°F: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-50971446.

I’d estimate we have had around 30 inches of snow here in Albany already. Late fall was very winter like.

I'm in VA and I certainly hope we don't have winter!

It's been mild in the Midwest as well, although this is the only year I can recall when we had snow for Halloween (3-4 inches) and none at all for Christmas.

Last year the early winter was mild as well, at least until mid-January. A 'polar vortex' and record breaking 30 below zero followed shortly thereafter... and the remainder of the winter was truly frigid.

All of this makes me feel a bit like an old guy, talking about the weather.

Wait... I am an old guy...

the pattern in the Northeast has been that we have it mild up through December and then the polar vortex hits us again and again until April.

I thought I saw Boston was exactly at it’s average snowfall through the end of December

But definitely feels milder

MD - I hope NO. My Koi are confused. I fed them today for the first time in months. I seriously don't know how to deal with this weather as a Koi owner.

I'm retired, have a ton of time, but haven't been to Vermont where I have two ski passes for over a month now, and after calling my friend who is an instructor at Killington tonight, I'm waiting one more week for the drive. Lame.

I prefer it not to, but the real cold tends to start sometime in late January and last until late March, at least here in DC.

Lately here in the mitten state it's been pretty mild. But after a crappy spring and fall I'll take it. And our way above average lake and river levels I'm ok with no snow. Can be mild all winter and I'd be thrilled. We need some evaporation of lake Michigan so levels go down some. It's been eating shoreline like crazy for a year now. Including houses.

Up here in Berlin, Germany, we have no traces of winter. It's a little chilly, but has barely hit below freezing. It's been raining which is great since we had a hot summer, but it feels more like California than Russia here.

I don't need it to get colder, but nature could use its cycle. If this continues, we'll have asparagus season in March!

Not a stellar winter in Berlin and Norway, but holding their own with about 35% more snow than average this time of year. No - not that Berlin or Norway ... New England Berlin (NH) and Norway (ME). Ice skating rink last weekend around the region’s ski resorts after rain and warmer weather the week before, but a 14”-18” powder day ushered in the New Year. Both skinning and downhill were much improved. Temps still a bit warm at 20’s/30’s, which once again brought trail counts down. Natural snow trails have no base and were quickly skied off. A light layer of fresh snow last night, but wet flakes. Mid 20’s still so struggling to stay cold.

Had our 15” of snow in metro Boston early December. Contractor working on house assured me he’d be working well into December to wrap up our project. I laughed at his optimism. He did have a day or two outside in Dec. North metro Boston has a light coat of snow, but clear streets have a fair number of thermal kitted cyclists out - quite a few 30’s/low 40’s days.

So all in all an OK winter so far in southern New England for the bike and a drive-to winter north for the boards. Gotta go West for really good snow tho.

Determined to get out this year (on the bike) regardless. Its been cold and wet. Lots of snow recently. Amazing how just a couple of hours south-no snow. Just spent an obscene amount on heated socks. They underwhelmed so back they go.

Here in the upper Midwest we are going to get clobbered starting tomorrow. Lots of rain, sleet, freezing rain, and snow are predicted. But it's been really tame so far so we are due to get clobbered.

Last time I went over the Millbrook village climb, someone in a truck got past me at the top. When I got down to the village, they had stopped in the middle of the road. Fortunately there was no oncoming traffic, because there is no way I was going to be able to stop. I usually walk going the other way back towards Blairstown, because we always go up Old Mine first, and those two climbs back to back are a bit much. Walking is just as fast too. I really liked the High Point climb, except for the giant trucks carrying pipe that were physically too large to fit on the road. I assume that's over with.

I prefer it not to, but the real cold tends to start sometime in late January and last until late March, at least here in DC.

Usually at this time an arctic blast settles in that the ice fisherman rejoice over, making it possible for them to bring the hut out on the lake where they can drink excessive amounts of alcohol and get away from the wives. This weekend will bring 50 degree rain all the way to the Canadian border.

that's a bad thing?

Inasmuch as the weather patterns and related events we are seeing - and have been seeing for some years now - tend to suggest that the climate change science is correct, yes, it's a very bad thing.

(Sorry to be the one to make this 'political' but it is impossible to fairly answer the question posed in the thread title without going there.)

Bad thing is the rapid freeze which comes during the rain, giving us skating rink roads and high winds. Gonna be a crappy Sunday.

In the Boston area, we had a couple of nice winter storms in December, and I was looking forward to some good skiing. The mountains are going to get whacked with warmth over the weekend and they can't afford to lose much.

Guess I'll be riding in the next 5 days or so, would rather be skiing.

If you ski, yes.

And for a lot of marriages in Upstate NY, Vermont, and NH.

I assume you mean the descent on old mine. Unless they paved it this summer, it's the same. They did fill some potholes, but that didn't stick. the only improvement is that many of the potholes are so aged that the sides are crumbling, and it's a bit easier to get through them. It's a bit shocking that they never fix that road. I ride with someone that will not ride down that hill. He walks it. One time he told me not to chase him, I would catch him later. So I let him go. Right down at the bottom of the old mine descent, there he was, walking. There is some interesting graffiti

Well, the 'deniers' DO admit the climate is changing, and not for the better BUT they insist that 'humans' and their CO2/Methane, put name of greenhpuse gas here, belching ways have nothing to do with it..
And the big oil $ bribes keeps a-flowing into their fat pockets...

yea, typically i would have gotten my snow blower out and started and ready to run for the winter season, but i havent even thought about it yet.

i'm wondering if i even bother, or just leave the tank of gas treated with stabilizer and the carb fogged alone.

i guess we'll see what happens!

And it’s still unbelievably warm tonight. Pulled into the driveway 45 minutes ago after attending a concert. 67°F at 10:30 PM in Syracuse in January. I haven’t seen this in 55 years of upstate NY winters.

Little bit of sun on my face from the slopes yesterday. Inversion early AM so spring snow up top and “firm” at the base. All loosened up by mid-morning. Perfect April day ... in January. I’ve always hated spring snow, but a day on snow is better than...

Raining off and on like mad this AM. Snow pack taking a beating.

I think we can now safely say that the answer is no. There hasn't been a real winter this year, at least in NYC.

In Europe, it's been the hottest winter on record by far: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/mar/05/truly-extreme-winter-2019-20-in-europe-by-far-hottest-on-record.

The unseasonal heat has led to the failure of the ice-wine harvest in Germany and snow having to be imported for sporting events in Sweden and Russia. In Helsinki, Finland, the average temperature for January and February was more than 6C higher than the 1981-2010 average. In the UK, serious flooding is likely to have been made worse by higher temperatures, as in 2015. :help:

Plenty of real Winter here in Central New York, but it is fading fast now. Most of the snow in my yard melted this past week and should be gone by the end of this one. Roads in the valley are clear, but up in the hills and mountains they have plenty of cracks, heaves and debris still.
