What are your 2020 cycling and life goals?

Here are some I’m thinking of for myself:

● Cut out mid-week drinking.
● Focus on eating less junk.
● Lose enough weight to fit into old clothes.
● Get in a bit more intensity of the bike, including spending some time on the trainer.
● Continue efforts in being less O.C.D. about how many miles I ride.
● Work more on being able to shut work out of my mind in “off” hours.
● Travel a bit.
● Live a little dangerously and do a non-local ride, even one requiring driving.
● Continue work on keeping bike stuff purchases more focused on specific needs and getting rid of things that don’t bring me enough joy. This still requires me to have many more bikes than my wife deems reasonable.
● Work more on not letting things get to me.

:)

Life? Stay alive, ride defensively, stay healthy....as I approach my 7th decade.
Stop 'yelling at clouds', politically..just makes me angry...at least until Nov 2020...

:butt:<-to aging..not much 'good' about it...

Retire, which hopefully leads to
riding more which hopefully leads to
actually being competitive in a CX race

and eat better, drink less (but I say that every year)

Try to get more fit thru fewer miles.
Find acceptable routes in the SW Chicagoland area.
Lose weight.......
In general, I hope my life is far, far less chaotic than it was in 2019... the pieces are in place for that to happen.

Simply, to ride more.

A career change has occupied my time since September.

In 2018, I rode 6200 miles. In 2019, I rode 3950 miles.

Ugh.

My goal was to be back on the bike by Jan 1, 2020.
I rode today a total of 8.6 miles at a snails pace.

I actually started riding Dec. 27, 2019, exactly 5 months after my accident.
First ride was 5.4 miles.

Gotta start somewhere...:)

That’s a 60+% increase over the first two rides! Congrats! Hope the recovery keeps progressing.

For me:

• Start with my 2019 distance (6275 mi) as my 2020 goal. I overshot my 2019 goal a bit and I’m really happy with it
• At least one multi-day ride or trip somewhere to ride. The mid-Hudson Valley is a great place to ride but I could use some horizon broadening
• More rides with other people
• Get rid of all the bike crap in my garage except the stuff I really use.

Find the time and energy to ride for fun instead of just commuting. Setting myself a low bar considering the career and family obligations anticipated (new kid coming soon, demanding 1 year job ending next November).

Great thread!

My goals are:

Get up earlier during the week to ride before work.
Stop being a fair-weather rider and thus ride more.
Signing up for two Ironman 70.3 races
Getting a new carbon 105 or ultegra equipped road bike that i can ride more and not worry about it being “too nice” and becoming a piece of wall art.

- I don't know how many miles I rode in 2019 - about 2,100 recorded but many MTB rides and commuting, errands, not recorded. Guessing about 3,000 miles. Now I have the Wahoo Elemnt I'm going to try to get all rides recorded, and aim for an average of 10 miles/day (3,660 miles.) Hats off to you folks with two and three times that!
- Do some overnight trips on a bike for the first time in decades.
- More time with family and friends.

All of the same stuff others posted - more sleep, better food intake.

The number of people who have said this (in person and online) is huge.

Get better at XC riding and racing. Used to consistently finish well in my class, now it seems everyone has passed me by!! Need to do more MTB in general, which should help. Also, eat better and less!!! Oh, and actually ride a 29er for the first time!

Complete my first 400K Brevet. I've done 200K and 300K several times. This will mean getting used to night riding and pushing myself to ride in crappy weather. My new Seven Redsky will help!

What I am seeing is as I age I need to be more aware of
flexibility & strength & the need to keep both ;)

Here are some randonneur-type goals.

Complete an R12, which is to complete a "permanent" of 200k or more for every month of the year. Permanents are brevets that can be done at any time. To get RUSA- Randonneurs USA- credit, one does this on a RUSA approved route, first registering with the route owner. There are one or two such routes starting about 20 miles from my house but I had planned to submit one or two routes starting locally and having them approved.
But the R12 program has been suspended due to issues obtaining insurance, which may or may not be resolved for January, or even 2020. So looks like I will have to do this unofficially.

Complete a brevet series- a 200, 300, 400, and 600k. I've done lots of sub 600ks but no 600k.

Complete a 300k brevet on the tandem (requires partner acquiescence)

Complete the New England Randonneurs Fleche. A fleche is a team brevet event consisting of a 24-hour ride with a minimum distance of 360k. Teams design their own route, which terminate in the same place. There are constraints that restrict riding too fast so team pace must be carefully considered in the route and length, as well as on the ride itself. Have never done one of these. I think maybe I enlist David in Maine for this.

I'm sort of eyeing a 1200k but not ready to make that a "goal".

I hadn't really thought about it but here are a few:
Lose some of the fluff accumulated around the middle
Continue on the ~6500 mile riding schedule I've been on; more than that seems to be redundant at my age
Ride my mountain bike a LOT more; its fun and a more complete workout for me
Retire and start double dipping so I can be on better financial footing when I actually do retire
Race more: Racing really winds my clock
Travel more

I did the PA Randonneurs Fleche in 2019, it was April or May. It was really fun! Really insane, it rained all night, but I'd do it again. Maybe :)

mine is just to get back on the road. i've been almost exclusively on trail and i think it's time just to get back on tarmac
i hadn't been tracking ride time at all but now i'll be back to tracking miles instead. i'm guessing 1k will be a push.

What are your 2020 cycling and life goals?

● Get in a bit more intensity of the bike, including spending some time on the trainer.
● Continue efforts in being less O.C.D. about how many miles I ride.

Spending time on the trainer helps with not being OCD on milage. According to Strava I rode just about 2000km this year. But I rode north of 250 hours and certainly didn't ride an average of 8km(5miles) an hour.

Your goals are good ones for sure!

Teach my daughter to ride a "pedal bike"

Do a few 100km plus rides. After a year where my longest ride was 85km, would be nice.

Do a "real" century.

Of all of these the first is most important to me and the most doable.

I think you have to focus on quality with a trainer because I can't imagine spending that much time on one. I still think I am definitely going to need to get myself set up on a smart trainer and Zwift or something equivalent to get going.

As of January 2, I'm on a pace to do 15,000 miles in 2020

Being on the back end of the bell curve age-wise, I don't have any goals. If I can still get out there and enjoy my rides, I'm a happy guy.

Good luck to everybody this year - and ride safe!

In no particular order:

1. Build up the two frames that have been sitting around.
2. Upgrade the other bikes that have components at least three cycles old.
3. Ski at least 60 days.
4. Double 2019 miles (only cleared to ride end of June 2019).
5. Train enough so I can climb the mile long hill at the end of most of my rides more easily.
6. Work on flexibility and strength, both for on and off bike reasons.
7. Be thankful that I can even contemplate doing all this.

Climb Mont. Ventoux from Bedoine, Malaucene, and Sault back to back to back.

That is a great goal! I think that is the order I would do it in if I were to attempt it. I’ve ridden up the Bedoin and Sault sides and down the Malaucene side. You’ll have one last up hill in the heat of the day back to the park in Sault to finish you off if you do it in the summer.

Now with a 3-month-old, 2020 goals are:

0. Figure out how to be a good father -- ongoing.
1. Train to be in good enough shape to ride and enjoy Eroica California. Probably the "new coastal" route; I don't know that I'll have the time to train for my normal "scalatores" route. April.
2. Put together an old Kona mountain bike with drop bars as a gravel bike and explore some of the local sidecountry in the Los Padres National Forest, near SBA and SLO and southern Big Sur. Spring to early summer, then late summer.
3. Put together a good-enough-but-not-too-good bike that I can bring and ride on a big road trip in the early summer visiting relatives and showing off the new boy. June.
4. Ride in Dutchess County NY when we're back visiting the grandparents. Thankfully, I've already got a bike stashed there. July.
5. Backpack an interesting route in the Sierra Nevada in late July.
6. Train to get ready to coach high school cross country again, and run a respectable 5k time. Run a single mile in the mid-six-minute range or better. Late summer into fall.
7. Spend less time browsing/shopping for N+1 when the bikes and frames that I already have are plenty good enough. Just as soon as the Poprad for #3 is finished...

I managed to not ride on a Saturday without feeling guilty about it, so I'd like to think that's a good start. If I can get myself to put in some quality efforts tomorrow, that will be even better. I only somewhat jokingly told someone that I need to make sure there's a large balance in my family time account by the time my next "bike" (really just the frame) shows up. The day off the bike inured to the benefit of the dogs, who got an extra long walk today.
