OT: Plumbing question

Lots of experience in a variety of things here, so posing this question. I have a tub that leaks water out the tub spout when the shower is on. The diverter valve/button is right under the main water knob, not built into the tub spout. To avoid replacing the entire valve and making a major plumbing project, can I just put a plug on the diverter valve and install a tub spout with a built in diverter?

Picture is the valve guts. No idea who makes it, as such I'm guessing that finding parts to replace just the internal diverter would be challenging.

it's most likely that you can buy just the diverter part, but you're going to have to yank it, however that is done.

Our delta is the same configuration, but it looks different than that. Doesn't mean that yours isn't a delta. Any hint on brand at all?

Do you know the brand / part number, and can you find the manual?

Does the button reset to the tub spout automatically when the water supply is shut off? At least some of those style diverters require the pipe outlet in the tub spout to be of specified length to provide adequate back-pressure

That looks like an old Moen T/S valve. Take that picture to a good plumbing supply house(not HD or Lowes) or maybe email it to Moen.
You should be able to replace the guts.

Defiantly looks like a Moen. Will not be hard to find replacement parts. Go to a plumbing supply store. Moen will more than likely warrantee the temp control valve but not the diverter valve.

I didnt see any identifiers when I had it apart. The logo on the handle isnt one I recognize, but I'll check with a plumbing supply house after the holidays. We just bought the house, so need to take care of a couple plumbing issues. This first, then drains gurgling next.

Took a closer look with a mirror to see better last night and the temp valve had Moen stamped lightly into the casting, the diverter itself doesnt look quite like either moen diverter I saw online, but I sent them an email and will see if I hear back.

For the question above, the diverter valve is supposed to reset when the water is turned off, but this one doesn't except on rare occurrences.

Your repair shouldn't be difficult, and shouldn't involve pipe replacement.

Replace the leaking parts and you're done. Add Teflon plumber's dope or Teflon tape to the threads of the hex nut before reassembly. Use Liquid Wrench or similar stuff beforehand to help loosen the nut if necessary.

Honestly I’d pull the entire unit and replace with a new one. There could be a decent amount of mineral build up that wont allow for the seal to hold. Definitely a MOEN, I know that valve housing profile notch. Valve is prone to sticking in the housing too.

I do feel so much better now, that frustration has simmered for a long time. Interestingly, I replaced the main valve last weekend. Coincidence... or not ?? :eek:
