View Full Version : OT: You can ring my bell

After 7 long weeks I finally got to ring the bell I had my last radiation/chemo treatment.
When I started this it seems like forever ago I could not see the light at the end of the tunnel. Well I did get to the light.
The first 4 weeks were not that bad but the last 3 weeks have been a gruelling painful journey. Between the radiation burn both inside and outside, chemo side affects, fatiuge, loss of appetite, extermely painful BM and my blood count in the dumps I thought I would never get through this.
Well its finally over and I can thank GOD that hopefully the treatments got everything. They say in a few weeks the "burn" should be over as it is still painful. Morphine was what got me through the last 2 1/2 weeks, that and a great bunch of people from a fellowship that I am a member of checked on me on a daily basis.

Ding, ding, ding! What a great post to see.

Props to you for making it through. I witnessed my wife go through it, and it wrecked her. I saw just how hard it can be.

Cheers to you. Stay positive, see the light, and continue your healing process.

Best of luck as you go forward with the rest of your life.

Congrats and best wishes for a continued recovery. Keep positive! Your strength will come back.

My father-in-law just got to ring his last month. He just got back from an out of state hunting trip. His buddies said he held up better than they did.

Great to know this is behind you! Cancer can be a real life changer in many ways, I know from experience. There can be a lingering anxiety afterwards wondering “what if”...... Never hesitate to talk to your loved ones about your feelings, it helps! Congrats on getting through the treatment, enjoy Christmas and I am hoping you are back on the bike enjoying life ASAP!

Thanks for all the well wishes. I am hoping in a few weeks to be close to my pre-treatment self. With my WBC and HnH in the dumps now I am experiencing some shortness of breath and fatigue still. Its a good thing that the pouch needs to walk as we are doing 3 to 4 1/2 mile walks each day, that gets me up and out with some fresh air.
Again thanks for all the well wishes,I'm getting there.

So I am 3 weeks out of chemo/radiation and the last 2.5 weeks have been he!!.
My stamina is non existent,I get winded doing simple easy tasks and chores. I get out of breath doing moderate activity like walking the dog around the 1/2 mile block or carrying a 40# bag of pellets up the steps to feed the stove.
I am finally this week starting to feel slightly better. A bit more stamina and not feeling like I got run over by a train and not wanting to nap twice a day.
I set up my rollers with the fork stand and am doing 3-15/20 easy spins a day for the past week. The workouts are not as fatiguing and my stamina and lung capacity are just starting to return. Both of my Drs. say I am right where I should be at this stage of the game and it will just keep slowly getting better.
It is a slow process but I can see I am very slowly feeling the recovery this week in baby steps.
Doing isometrics, stretching and easy spins seems to be helping and getting me out of myself.

Your story resonated with me.

I did 38 sessions of IMRT as adjuvant therapy for stage 3 prostate cancer. Only the people who wait in the room to go in the other room with the thick door and the machine that clicks and whirs that doesn't make you feel bad then but instead it sneaks up on you truly understand.

Stay strong - it does get better.

Keep improving Skiezo! My sister is in Chemo (no rad, thankfully) right now and she has her 4 1/2 year old twins keeping her busy. Sucks but it keeps her moving I guess.

Congrats and hang in there. My wife’s hardest weeks by far were at the conclusion of the chemo/radiation. I recall her oncologist said this would likely occur because of the cumulation of the drugs and radiation doses. Good news is that she slowly regained her strength and three months after completing her treatments was riding up the Stelvio. Good Luck!!!

Can relate as I have had my own treatment challenges over the yrs.
Sometimes that light at end of tunnel is a mirage and the recovery time can easily be measured in months. Take it slow, take it easy as your body has been through a lot and needs time to recover.

It just sucks sometimes that it takes so long to truly bounce back.
