View Full Version : Best Saddle Bag -- who makes it?

I need a saddle bag to carry two 700c tubes, 3 CO2s, Levers, and a patch kit.

Previously I've been a Lezyne fan but I've had a ton of zipper failures and want to try something different.

Oh, and it must be black.

Who makes it and which one should I get?

This what I was about to recommend. I own one and I don’t think there is a better saddle bag out there for your size requirements.

Easily my favorite as well. Although it might be a touch small for all the OP wants to carry.

If it doesn't have to be a saddle bag, the Ornot Mini Handlebar bag could carry two tubes, with 3 CO2s and levers.

Fair point. I don't carry CO2 canisters, but 3 definitely seems to be a bit much for the Outer Shell. Mine currently fits a big 27.5"x1.75-2.5" sized tube, one Pedros lever, and a Park patch kit with room to spare.

Spur cycle! Expandable and carries the most about of stuff with the smallest profile. Super durable too! So simple and right.

Arundel "Dual" user here.

Two 700c tubes (with either 48mm or 80mm valves), two Co2 canisters, one Co2 pump head, 1 tire lever, 1 thin Park Tool TB-2 (tire boot), and a small multi-tool.
It's packed in there good & tight, but it works like a charm.

Been riding this setup for quite a few years.

Love my Outershell handlebar bag. Been riding with it on my commute bike practically every day for like 3 years now. Still awesome and holding up well.

Here's a bigger seatbag from him. NOt as tidy or svlete but looks pretty flexible for your uses: https://www.outershelladventure.com/shop/cziofh91assn12b2595c4rhsyfr6kq

Reminds me of the Fairweather bag (https://global.bluelug.com/fairweather-seat-bag-mini-x-pac-black.html) but much cheaper!

Dont really like how a saddle bag looks on a bike. So I have one of these king kargo cages and am a huge fan. I use the mtn size on my road bike and can hold 2 tubes, a multitool, patch kit, tire level, and some other small things in there. I even used to carry a small lezyne pump in there previously (with one less tube)...

I've been using one of theirs for a bit over a year now and, minus the mud currently caked on it, it is good as new. Really robust construction and fits a heck of a lot of stuff (dynamite roll +, holds 2x 700x32 tubes, Lezyne multitool, Wofltooth chainlink tool, patch kit with a superglue tube, extra lever, plus a few euros worth of coins with room to spare).

Plus they're nice people and give a sh*t about the environment, working really hard to reduce the impact of painting and making smart choices in their fabric recycling.

This is a big reason I have a 35mm T&T Rocket Pocket on my Christmas list. Doesn't hurt that they're kind of local to me as a Toronto native.

I have one of their Bidon Stuff Bags and it's terrific.

I’ve tried a few mentioned but now a big fan of SpeedSleeve. Comes in three sizes to finding that right size is easy. I know a few had issues with them at first when they launched on Kickstarter a few years back but they seem to have gotten past their growing pains. Super secure, easy, quick on/off, packs down compact, and do not use a strap around the seatpost, only through the seat rails.

They’re certainly worth a look.

I purchased a RoadRunner Burrito Bag a few months back, used it daily on a two week cycling vacation. Found it to be very handy, surprised how much I liked it.

Given the trend towards All Road, Gravel, or whatever it’s being called these days, along with bigger tires and side trips down adventurous paths I can see where we might transition from traditional smaller seat bags to handlebar bags. Makes a lot of sense.

SpeedSleeve Ranger is the only one I use now for all disciplines. It's super compact, can fit a ton of stuff if needed, won't rub your leg, and stays secure even on super rough mountain bike trails.

If you want to go full baller, the Silca one with the Boa dial is it.

Hate to rain on Silca but after using one for a couple of years find it overly engineered, the BOA along with the snap and hook closure is, for me, too clumbersome. The Silca was my everyday go-to until I started using the Speedsleeve. Just as secure, rolls up easier, much cheaper. And so much faster/easier to take on-off.

Keep meaning to toss my Silca in the classifieds.

Also use to use the Arundel. Big issue with that one for me was security. Had one pop off when bunny hopping a speed bump. A passing motorist picked-it up and chased me down or I would have never known. I had it pop off a few times after that, it’s now sitting in a drawer somewhere. A wider strap and that would also be a solid seat roll, but as is, not that secure.

Nothing fancy but I like the Jandd bags...think the ones I use are called mini mountain wedge bag or something...can fit two tubes, co thing as well as a couple of cartridges, irons etc...no velcro via chaffing and just a strap under the rails...actually, I think it has a velcro seat tube thing but I just cut those off...really durable as well...cheap enough too...they will even do a special order if you want certain colors to match frame or whatever if I remember right for not much more...good company and good simple bags...lifetime warranty as well...

Having owned the MTB size of these for several years, I (respectfully) call BS on the capacity or at least convenience. It's a cool idea for ONE 700c tube, a thin multitool, and a CO2. You could stuff more in there (a 2nd tube if they're both thin 18-23c size) but at that point it becomes really annoying to get anything in or out without a lot of fuss- and when it's raining or your ride buds are heckling your pathetic self by the side of the road to (FFS!) just put everything in your pocket and give up on it already- well, back to the convenience (and larger capacity) of a seat bag. I love King Cage cages, but this conflagration, not so much. I sold it in the classifieds, with all transparency and caveats, so somebody liked it I guess.

I really like the design of these made-in-USA Krieg bags that I first found at NAHBS/Richmond quite a few years back and I've bought quite a few since. They're big enough for a couple of tubes, a multitool and 1-2 CO2 cartridges (maybe 3 with narrow road tubes, I usually carry a couple of larger 28-35c tubes). Lots of colors, including (I think) plain black, but I like colors, too much black in my life already. I have half a dozen of these in "normal size", including (shamelessly) a Flanders Lion thing on my Sweet Fixie. Look around the web for re-sellers, there's lots of colors that aren't shown on the website.

It is funny, I must have 20 different seat bags/pouches/rolls thinking newer, novel design, sexy fabric must be better yet I always go back to my 20 yo Jandd.

One that also works well for me (it works well loaded with little or lots) is the Morpha Tool Roll (https://olivegreendog.com/mopha-bike-tool-roll/). First of many tool rolls I tried and still the best (by far).

I used to like the old style Timbuk2 before the velcro gave up (will never buy one that uses velcro again).

I figured you were but I'm not kidding it works great. There is no zipper to seize up or velcro to wear out and if it gets a hole in it just get another sock. Personally, I find old ski socks work the best.

Inside Line Equipment. Done and done.

Agree with this. I've tried and own a bunch of different bags and the ILE All Mountain seat bag is currently doing double duty as I switch it back and forth between my gravel and MTB bike. The design is just right and you don't notice it being there when you don't want to. It's easy to get it to stay snug against the seat. It never comes lose. It comes in black.

I have a Silca bag on my road bike. It's a little bit of trouble and I've learned how to ratchet it down and position it so it doesn't flip. Also comes in black.

I've given up on most roll bags. They're hip and trendy but way too much trouble to repack during a ride.

I recommend ILE.

I think yanco is one of the “originals”? I had one, its good but not better than anything else out there. Just a tool roll, not much to it.

I have had probably 10 saddle bags/rolls. My favorite was the ile. I prefer a small bag over a roll, rolls are annoying since you have to unwrap all that crap, with a bag you open the flap, take what you want on on you go.

The thing about the yanco roll is that i can cinch it down nice and tight...I have one on a couple of bikes. The same with the Outer Shell with the Voile Strap it's made with.

Although the ILE is the easiest to pack and repack, i did not like the buckle system. Never felt like i could get it tight enough or it seemed to loosen up.
