It's a Ford. It's electric.

But it's not a Mustang. Discuss.

(It actually traces its lineage to my 1974 Pinto Hatchback.)

77 mustang, but 4 doors?

i do agree, not a mustang for me either. I would have named it something else or even Taurus electric just to keep the name still out there.

How much is going to be??

Ford put themselves in a bit of a box by canceling all US cars that aren't the Mustang.

I've read that it's an SUV so why even use the "Mustang" name for it?

It being an EV is the least un-Mustangy thing about it.

I was a pretty devout Ford person up until last year. Their business/market decisions are just puzzling and terrible.
My '79 Cobra project will soon find a new home, and when my '91 F150 dies, it will not be replaced with a Ford (if I bother to replace it all. Trucks are handy, but....)
Currently looking at 2008-2011 Challenger R/T and SRT's for a fun daily.

Maligning the "Mach" name with that thing is just another poor marketing idea.

Ford has a poor history of dragging respected names through the mud. It usually takes them a few years to right those wrongs...

Mazdang?
Ford used to own 1/3 of Mazda, so that makes some semblance of sense...

If it doesn't have fake air intakes on the sides in front of the rear wheels, it's not a Mustang.

I think it looks pretty good at least better than the previous version of the
Mustang anyways.

I remember being super jealous of this guy in HS who had a 67 Mustang in flat black with a Hurst shifter. That thing was so sweet, way better than my '81 Champagne colored Rabbit.

0-60 mid 3's. 600 Ft lbs Tq in top models. Up to 300 mile range. Direct competitor to Tesla Model Y. I wish them success.

I saw that this morning and thought it looked OK.....I see it channeling the A-R Stelvio more than the Mustang, but I thought worth keeping an eye on.

I don't get the "Mustang" name....maybe cuz its a "sports" SUV

Sure it's a departure but what exactly makes a car a "Mustang" beyond Ford calling it one?

Using an existing, popular name for the vehicle gives a sense of familiarity or at least association with another vehicle of the same name.

Had they given it a new, different name, people would more likely see it as an untested vehicle.

It's marketing, and I get the attempt, even if they offended those who hold the Mach name associated with the Mustang.

I also get the potential for deflated expectations, as people expected to see an E-version of a Mustang. This doesn't look like it.

Ralph

This is a purpose built EV......like a Tesla. No way to make it a hybrid or internal combustion engine vehicle. There are no compromises in the design for other power trains.

They happened to use the name Mustang.....but it's really Ford's first purpose built EV.

To make these vehicles aero efficient, with no grills, and about the same size as some other EV's, they are all going to look somewhat alike.

I don't know if I like it or not. Or if I would buy one. But I get the effort.

I imagine this kind of vehicle is going to be mighty popular in a few years. Myself....I can't get over the idea of having to charge it up. That it has a range. Funnny…..my IC engines cars have a range also.....whatever gas is in the tank. But somehow I think about it differently.

That's probably something that's just in my mind....that I'll get over as more and more charging stations become available.

My brother lives in a community where everyone uses a golf cart for local trips. He doesn't seem to mind driving his cart around all day, then driving into his garage up to the charging equipment on the wall.....and hooking it up to his cart. Just normal activity to him. Very little maintenance on that cart. A business picks it up about once a year for maintenance....that's about all. Much less expense than a small car for short trips. Imagine that's how it's going to be for all trips one day.

California just announced they aren't buying any more GM products. They have bought a number of Volts in the past. So maybe they will get some of these instead.

I can't think of any other vehicle model name that is both a car and SUV. It could have made more sense to bring back the Crown Victoria. And I'm not knocking this concept. It could prove to be great and I don't even mind the styling.

With a few tweaks here or there it might even give the Aztek some competition in the looks department:

Yup, sheep in wolf's clothing...:)
Up to 300 mile range.

That's optimistic, I'm sure..driving like a little old, warm summer day, no accessories on(like A/C) and hoping you have a charge station when ya get there..

Presumably California. California, if it were its own nation, would have one of the largest economies in the world. I assume the state purchases a lot of vehicles and moving away from one brand is likely a not insignificant loss to that brand.

The automobile magazine Car & Driver once hilariously commented:
"There are several types of cars...sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, minivans, trucks, and the Pontiac Aztek."

As much as I would like for this to be successful, I just don't see it happening. This is going to be a massive flop for Ford. Bad branding, odd yet bland styling, and Ford's questionable build quality/reliability out of the gate will all conspire to hurt their future EV efforts with this first attempt. Bummer.

I'm not sure where the confusion is, California buys $60-70million worth of cars per year. It's a pretty significant hit, and there are a number of states that might follow suit, because it's a boycott of companies that don't want California to have authority to regulate emissions. I think I saw there were ~20 such states.

My buddy's cousin put a 302 in one of those for him. That Pinto was just plain scary.

I also think it's poor judgement putting the Mustang name on glorified commuter vehicle. The least they should have done is make it a hybrid, then it would be a worthy automobile - even if the name doesn't fit.
