List your favorite riding bike.

You don't have to justify anything as long as it's yours and yours alone.

One entry per person. ;)

I will go first.

how am i supposed to pick just one?

the rocky mountain hammer i learned to ride trail on, took to parties when i knew i'd be leaving in no state to drive home, commuted through 4 winters, and finally destroyed couriering in montreal

the 53cm marinoni i toured across ontario on (i'm 6'2"). might have been the tubs but that thing cornered like no bike i've ever ridden

the single speed apollo grand sport, which was the only bike i owned in law school, was both a blast to ride, especially on the trails around UBC, and soaked in wonderful memories

the brodie sovereign i bought right before i graduated got me back into mountain biking. so smooth, so classy

the chromag samurai i bought with the insurance money from the theft of the sovereign got me hooked on mountain biking in bc. un****withable

the proto banshee prime was probably my favourite riding trail bike i ever owned (as long as the trail was pointing downhill -- i swear that frame weighed 10 lbs)

the xprezo adhoc i owned briefly before i moved to the east coast illuminated progressive mtb geometry, made me feel like a boss on stuff i would otherwise have walked

my surly wednesday, one of the few things i look forward to when winter looms and now a year-round pleasure with 27.5+ wheels

my lynskey gr270. three rides in, i think i'm in love

This is a timely post.
I've just been wondering how many people love their Moser Leader AX's?
I just recently acquired mine, an Oria tubed one. Only two rides, but it's fantastic! I mostly rode my Della Santa Osso Buco this year. The Moser is every bit as nice.

I has long, 43.5cm chainstays, and short BB drop of 6.5cm, but I just enjoy its steering, which has little to do with the other two! It's not too racy, not too slow, turns easily but has all day straight line manners. It's also a jack of all trades of a bike; it can carry stuff, and laugh at the rain.

Well for me it's still this Giordana XL Super. Although I am sorting out it's twin brother that's built up with "better" parts.

3 favorites. Different reasons.

Serotta Colorado CR with steel fork - Compact crankset, Campy 10 and modern wheels. Just a fun ride.

Serotta Hors Categorie - By far the best descending bike. All day comfort. If it only had disk brakes or paul brakes and wide clearances... it would be perfect.

Kelly Bedford Custom Touring - A totally relaxed ride.

I have others, but those are my favorite bikes.

It would be a knife fight between the speedvagen and my dekerf. Only thing is they are two totally different animals with two totally different uses.

The speedvagen has put me in a position that just feels right and confident on the road. Going fast, or at least feeling fast is what it does well and inspires confidence.

The dekerf, even though it has 26 inch wheels and old school geometry just rides right in the woods. I am not a burly hucker guy, just like to ride at a nice pace in the woods, so it is great. Plus it is pulls a trailer with my daughter around the neighbourhood really well.

When I first saw the question, my first thought was "for what?" But there's that pesky rule...

So being that my background as a rider is roadie first, then it'll have to be this one: My own build. Built around 650c wheels (don't care what you say, I like how they respond), a Kestrel EMS fork, and took some liberties for lighter weight (which I don't normally do). High trail, stable, all-day riding.

Since it's a frame I built myself, it's hard to say how much of my affection for its ride quality is bias and how much is due to the fact that I built it to be just what I want. I ride this in rotation with a number of frames built by other people, which I also like, but there's something about this one that I really dig.

No22 Drifter is my favorite bike. It can do it all with a simple wheel and tire swap. 650b 48mm slicks no problem for off road and chunky gravel, 700c 35mm for faster gravel and rough road use, 700c 32mm slicks for all around road use with some dirt and gravel mixed in or just road riding.

The bike does everything I like to do on a drop bar bike and does it well. It could and may one day be my only Gravel/Road bike and I am perfectly ok with that!

Thanks, it's a custom road frame I brought to the NAHBS show earlier this year. I wanted to bring my version of a modern road bike, clearance for fat 28's, compact geometry, carbon wheels (thanks Alto) and saddle/seatpost (thanks EliteVelo for the Berk). The frame was made with custom fillet lugs, Columbus Spirit main triangle with polished XCR rear end and polished KVA headtube and fork blades. The brake cable is internally routed through the top tube and the rear derailleur cable internally routing through the chainstays. Lastly the stem is a custom piece and the paint a deep red pearl, because red goes faster. As seen in the photos the bike weighed 16.1 lbs.

I love how the bike handles at speed--solid, yet quick to turn in/adjust a line. Feels so "quick"--tight, short wheelbase/front center.

I'm curious enough about the geometry of this one (came across it second-hand) that I'm taking it to a local builder this winter to figure out the exact geometry for a future project.

Ever build a bike around a hub you have laying around? The prospect excites me. I'll be looking for a 28 hole match for this beauty when I get closer, and I'll go from there.

This thread reminds me of the great Comanche chief Quanah Parker when he Was invited to the White house by Teddy Roosevelt:

During their visit, Roosevelt told the chief, Quanah, you are going to learn white man ways now. You have to do like the white man."

"Shore, president," Quanah said. "You tell me. I'm willing to learn."

Roosevelt said, "Our law says you have one wife. You have nine. You are going to have to get rid of eight wives."

Quanah replied, "OK, fine, you tell the other eight wives."

All nine wives went to the White House with Quanah later to visit Roosevelt.

Have a Giordana XL-ECO also. Very nice. The Serotta Hors has been on my radar for a long while. Missed out on one this past year. Timing and/or price just hasn't clicked for the few that come up in my size. Turns out I should have bought one about 5 years ago. Of course that could be applied to real estate and other things as well.

Not sure if the emphasis is on the ride or the favorite. My best riding bike has to be the Colorado Soft Tail Road with the Hors Categorie a virtual tie. Was going to ride the Soft Tail this afternoon if the roads had dried up but they haven't and I just spent half the afternoon cleaning the two bikes for the picture.

That Colorado Soft Tail is super cool! I have never seen one before and was unaware of its existence.

I find the responses very interesting, with the plethora of buzz absorbing, multi-ply damping, vertically compliant, laterally stiff carbon fiber wonderbikes that are available it seems steel (and to a lesser extent Ti) is carrying the day in this informal inquiry

So this my be a little website skewed.
I have a 14.25# carbon bike that is quite nice, a Ti bike that fits like a glove, also nice. My steel bikes are where it's at for me.

it speaks to my question about whether the thread is about favorite bike, or best riding.

It's opened to each person's own interpretation. It doesn't really matter. That's part of the fun and what creates a diversity of responses and opinions.
Like I said on my first post, nobody really has to justify what they put up, as long as the reasons are theirs and theirs alone, nobody will or should question them.

You post yours and let others do theirs...that's it. :hello:

Oliver pal, I know you are into farming. I know you have big tractors. I know you have quite a few bikes...What I didn't know is you have a Serotta Soft Ride!

Oh no....no..no...no...thank you grateful pal, I am grateful for your kind offer but no thanks.

I already have a Hampsten Strada Bianca and it's the most versatile bike in their lineup. As for Ti - 2 roadie, 1 cyclocross, 1 gravel, 1 travel coupled - that's more than my fair share, don't want to appear ungrateful and keep acquiring

Hey, we should meet up and ride!

Nothing rides quite as good as my PDM Concorde Squadra.

90's steel...it keeps on giving.

https://keyassets.timeincuk.net/inspirewp/live/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2009/07/08_Earley.jpg

So I ripped the derailleur off my '89-ish SLX PDM Concorde and a friend lent me her Paramount of the same vintage.

Liked that Paramount better than the Concorde. Rode nicer.

I eventually sold the Concorde in a fit of needing rent $$. At the time I sold it, it had Sachs New Success all over it. I've been halfway looking for one or the other of each since. I either have the $$ and can't find one, or find one and don't have the $$.

Love how all my bikes ride but this one is the hands down winner.

Non-indexed Campy grab bag 10 sp shifts solid like it was carved from granite. Only bike I have that is what I would call "Planar". All bikes go forward when you pedal, but this one seems to fill a void and smooth out with the appropriate power unlike any other bike I have ridden. When up to speed it just settles into an effortless sweet spot. Fits like a glove. Color changing paint that looks pink or red depending on lighting. Chrome where it should be. Internal routing. ^ Nice Ciocc!

I picked up a 57cm Designer 84 from the original owner last year. I love how it rides but it's a tad too big if I'm being honest. Not the best cosmetic shape but it does fly down the road and is very comfortable. The bike was my entry into the Ciocc world and now I've got it listed locally so I can move it on and find one that fits me better. You are so right about how well they ride!

I have a sloping S3 that is pretty fantastic...or maybe it's the Campy Shamals tubulars that make it so great

While I really like the performance of my Vamoots RSL and my Madones (which I haven't ridden in a while), my favorite riding bike is my Moots Compact. I like it so much I built another one exactly like it, with S&S couplers for travel.

Well, if it helps....

Out of my thirtysome bikes my De Rosa Nuovo Classico is in the top three at least. This dispite being one of my smaller bikes. It's a TSX tubed frame that was built up with a brand new Campagnolo Chorus 11 speed setup. Right now it's sporting some nice matching Fulcrum 3 wheels with white hubs and red logos. It is a really wonderful ride that I do throroughly enjoy. Diamant stays and a classic flat crown fork. I will adnit that it's lived a useful life with other owners and shows it cosmetically. One day I'll "upgrade" to a 55/56 cm De Rosa that will be a better fight.

I love my Routt RSL, and I've put more miles on it than anything I've ever owned. But.... I think my favorite riding bike was a Guru Praemio that I had my shop order for me to buy. It went on my layaway for a long time, and it was completely worth it. That bike was stupidly stiff for a Ti bike and absolutely carved on descents. It was even painted, and the paint job was spectacular. A black, bare ti, and royal purple color scheme. I still regret selling it to this day.

I had a Praemio R which now resides with another forum member. It was easily one of the nicest titanium bikes I have ever seen and ridden. It was definitely the stiffest with 1” chain stays, but still smooth like a ti bike should be.

Guru made some very nice titanium bicycles. I believe t-lab are the same crew up in Canada. I was able to ride the rep for absolute blacks t-lab gravel bike a little over a month ago and it was super nice!

Yep, it was a Praemio R. I went to find a picture of it and I realize that I only have 8 pictures of it, and they are all terrible. I'm currently trying to attach the least worst.

And yeah, Guru is now sorta T-Lab. Same owners, but they lost a lot of talent when they shut Guru down. Their Ti bikes are nice, but I don't think they are as nice as their old Ti bikes. I'm not a huge fan of the aesthetics, especially since I don't think they ride much better, if at all.

Ok, I'm giving up on trying to attach. Something is funky with the site and its taking forever to upload really 140Kb of picture.

The Maipei Colnago should win some sort of prize.

Those tight, clean lines! The cool, grey metal oozing utilitarian sophistication. The impeccable use of space, suggesting something...but ultimately leaving it to the viewer's imagination.

Yes, Adam. The grating on that bridge...just wow!!!

As a side note, your #22 is one of the coolest bikes on the site :)

I am surprised there is not a single De Rosa on the thread....

OK. From a glorious day 6 or 8 weeks ago.

Toss up between this and my Peg Duende... the Peg has a little bit more crisp and taut feel, but this would be my choice for a day-long ride.

Ha. I’m 90 percent sure you sold your Guru Praemio R to me, unless they did a lot of iterations of this paint job. I still think about how fast that bike was. Easily the fastest feeling bike I’ve ever owned. I regret selling as well.

Lots of wonderful, drool-worthy machines in this thread, not that I'm surprised.

For me, it's my ~1965 Cinelli Speciale Corsa with Campy Record/Chorus 10sp triple. Columbus SP frame. Heavy as hell. Don't care. (Heck, I'm heavy as hell, too.) Ridiculously long wheelbase. Still don't care. This thing is magic.

I traded a 1986 De Rosa frame to get this frame and don't regret it. My Eisentraut and Ron Cooper now get a lot less riding time. The De Rosa, Eisentraut and Cooper are all fantastic frames, and all were /are also equipped with Campy 10sp triple (and the same tires - Conti 4000) for a true apples to apples comparison. This Cinelli feels better to me.

I will never let this one go. Ever.

For whatever reason, I can't get a photo to attach, but it is post #20 in this thread (https://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=223163&page=2).

Beautiful bike. And I love the commitment to a certain riding experience vs. chasing the latest and greatest. I could learn a lot from that mindset (and save boat-loads of money).

Thanks for the pic and the nice words. I'm not so sure about the "saving money" part though . . . .

The Highball 29er is my favorite this week. It’s the perfect bike for some of my favorite rides.

I sat on one of these at the shop last week, it's as comfy as my couch, unfortunately it's about $1500 over my (gift) card limit. :p

Happy trails, sparky pal.

Agree. Santa Cruz did something magical with the rear triangle of this one.

I've had this Vamoots for over 10 years now and it's still my favorite. It reminds me of a really nice Columbus SL frameset. Not the stiffest, but nice, comfortable, and responsive.

I would also add this one as my entry to the "best looking" thread.
