Climb,

Check Bontrager Race X-Lite. I have a 130mm -17. I think they go up to 140.

jack, i did check. the 130 has -17, but 140 has just -7. and their xxx lite has a 140 with a -12. thomson has -17 but only up to 130. :crap:

i've got -17 130s from ritchey, bontrager, and oval...I don't think anyone makes a 140.

what's the drop on those easton bars? oval deeps are 145mm...would that give you the 5mm lower that you want to go? the reach is 88mm...

i feel you on the monkey arms, climb...have a -17 and no spacer on my scott, and wish i could get a few mm lower...the pacenti was made "small" (57 c-c) to get the front low enough for summer (12.5cm of drop)

trying to get the bar tops and hoods (with flat ramp) lower. man, robert, 12.5cm is impressive. i'm at 8cm, and playing with 8.5. one of my pegs is at 8.5 and feels good. trying to get the vxrs a bit lower.

its not impressive when you can just about touch your knees without bending at the waist...when you're six foot with a six-six armspan...obtuse and i may be very distant relatives

i called my pal at trek today in charge of all the discovery team sponsorship stuff and he and i vaguelly remember race x lite stems of the -17' 140mm....i'm not making any promises but he said he'd "look"...the last time he "looked" i scored a set of race x lite tubulars with non-machined sidewalls a super fat rim and ceramic bearings so there is hope but i digress.....

the second option is to (gulp) find a fork with a bit more steerer tube and install a 140mm newton pista stem which is 67'...or you could just go super low with the track stem as is.

Holy Crap Not-so-big-Bob !!!

In climbing you what is termed a plus 6 ape factor. You would be the envy of many rock climbers, myself included. Most of us mere mortals have at most a plus 1 or 2 ape factor.

that ain't nothing. i can touch my knees without bending and my knees are like right on top of my ankles to boot. as for rock climbing; no dice. my shoulders are narrower than a 12 year old girls and i have trouble lifting kleenex let alone my own fat arse up the side of a god-forsaken cliff....but i handilly win those "jump as high as you can" excercise stops they insist on putting every thirty meters on any well-groomed jogging trail in german metropolitan parks. i lose the points i win on the pull-up bar though.

Listen bub- give me a couple months of your time and you'd be all over that cliff. Climbing is a lot of leg strength, footwork and balance which you clearly have from your racing pedigree. As for your upper body, most good rock climbers don't have big guns-they are just tenacious and willing to fall once in a while. When it starts to get really steep to overhanging you do need some upper body.

thanks very much for the searching. i actually have that stem right now (was gonna put it on something else) but the angle isn't quite deep enough. it is very close to the time stem in angle. it's darn hard to find a 140 (for OS bars) with a -17. but i really appreciate your help. forum folks rock.

custom stem (you can paint it white)?

Google gets a few references (Soulcraft; Seven, Moots) though some are not clearly custom as to angle.

Otherwise, there's an area of Manchuria that specializes in leg stretching...

Might be preferable to altering the co-design of fork and frame that is so prized.

Climb01742
12-29-2006, 05:52 AM
agree, centaur, fork stays. worst case, i just get used to where bars are. thing is, when 98% of a bike feels perfect, that last 2% stands out. i had thought about a custom stem. hopefully, obtuse can pull something out of his...bag o' tricks.

There's the -17 3T in 135mm, if you can live without that final 5mm.

Or how about a 140mm Deda Zero, not the new zero100 oversized one with a -8, but the older -17 sculpted one?

Most of the the small frame builders will make a custom cromoly stem but it will be expensive. I bought a 140mm salsa cromoly stem (-17) but that was several years ago.
