I'm coming up on 125,000 miles, ones I had recorded & can verify, over the course of my riding days. Thought that was pretty darn good. Then I saw this guy. https://www.cyclist.co.uk/news/7352/russ-mantle-82-set-to-become-first-uk-cyclist-to-ride-1-million-miles?fbclid=IwAR0bAF4MLK_94-qVIoF3iuOEHc6Fj2GcVBEoYzGcezQFYDqfI_aut9Idp6c
I only need to average 41,667 miles a year to do this by the time I turn 82.
How about you guys? Any idea of total miles over the years?

I'm a rookie I guess. I started recording my miles in 2010. Since then only 44,412 total miles so far....

Hard to believe what this guy has done.

I thought I was doing well at 5K miles per year and over 100K miles since 2000 but nothing compared to the guy in the article.

Everyone starts somewhere!

I am incredibly impressed by anyone who gets even close to a million miles. I do 6-7k miles per year, and if I can keep that up for 50 years, I'll be lucky to hit 400,000 miles. My wife just hit 2,000 miles for the first time this year, and I couldn't be prouder.

I don't record milage per say, but a back of the envelope calculation I would say that I have at least 350,000km.

I am embarrassed by my low lifetime mileage, except at least 60% was off road.

Way to go, Mr. Russ Mantle! That is a truly terrific achievement.
Around 360,000 miles here. Hope to one day achieve 500,000.

I used to care, now I don't.

From training perspective time in saddle more important

1M is an astounding number of miles, no matter how you look at it.
Maybe more astounding is how he measured it 50+ years ago.

For me elevation gain tells the story of the ride more so than mileage. A basic loop from home can be 25 / 3000'

can document 56K, but that's only for 13 of the 50+ years I've been putting in miles...

no idea what the actual total would be.

Those are very impressive numbers. Good for him. I wish i can still do 8000 a year at his age..

108,xxx miles recorded since 1990. Probably another 20 or 30k before that and in the one year (2004) that I lost records for.

1 million is, as it says in the article, staggering.

Incredible.
fwiw even 8,000 is well over my appetite for riding. The guy must be a machine.

I wonder how many miles he has on that Holdsworth, this article (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/11/05/82-year-old-become-first-person-britain-cycle-one-million-miles/) says he's owned it since 1964.

I don't know how many miles I've ridden, this was my 19th season. I didn't keep track much at all the first 15+ years I was riding. My guess is my total is > 50K but less than 100K. With fewer and fewer miles since I got married 10 years ago. When I was single it seemed I had nothing to do a lot of the time and just ate up time riding.

I am not real concerned about how many miles I ride.. at some point I was concerned about number of hours.

Now I kind of feel like I no longer want to just ride as much as I can... at some point I started getting really concerned with feeling like 100% cycling didn't lead to "balanced" fitness, and I always wanted to find something else that I enjoyed as much as cycling that didn't take as many hours... the hours to get the most out of cycling aren't very compatible with family life.

A lot of the stuff with "balanced" fitness concerns me more now but it always did.. I don't really think I ever really had a 10k mile year in me.. I'd always get concerned about too much cycling having a detrimental effect on me.

You guys are amazing - I'm sure my mileage would be a small fraction of what some of you have logged.

I am reminded of an article in the Rivendell Reader in the mid-90s about an eccentric guy (my memory is that he lived in the Midwest) who rode a Sears cruiser many thousands of miles per year. He sounded like a colorful guy well on his way to logging big miles over his lifetime. Does anyone else remember that, or have a link to the article? I have tried Googling and find nothing helpful.

I think I'm up to 120,000 miles or so since 1989 when I started keeping track. On one sheet of paper, I have monthly miles and yearly totals since then. It's quite a reminder of what was going on in my life at various times since then.

Shoot for 4000 mi/year for the last 15 or so years. Always more than 2k/yr, never gotten to 5k/yr. Most in a month is just under 800 miles. All in New England/NY, except for some trips to France/Italy/Spain.

Tony, See the post above for who I was thinking of. First person I'd ever heard of who had ridden that much.

"Over the past 41 years, Hoffman has averaged 81.4 miles per day. He has clocked 24,700 days of cycling, with 1,500 days off."
Almost 1.1 million miles as of 2006, when this was written

That's great. Even after a heart attack he's still riding 25 miles every other day. Without his cycling it probably would've killed him.

That's a lean dude.

I have the most and best bike ridden miles of anyone. Nobody ever in the history of bike riding miles has ridden miles like I have. I have many if not all I am told, of the top experts in the bike riding industry all over the world personally verify my miles and all of them agree that nobody has ridden more miles better on a bike than I have.

The rest of you are all just sad losers.

That's an amazing feat....Chapeau Mr. Mantle!

But just think how many he could have ridden if he had clipless pedals, brifters and disc brakes. :)

And a tip of my hat to the 80 year old guy in the story! Pretty incredible

that is awesome. incredible feat!

personally I just hope Danny Chew (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Chew) makes it to one million. last information I could find says he's at around 780k, and he's 57. it's a lot harder to reach that goal now on a hand cycle, but hopefully he does it.
