Hi folks -

My Dura Ace 7400 seat post finally broke, after some degree of use, as you can imagine by the genus. It was a great post, offering the setback I needed and a simple adjusting clamp.

I'm having trouble finding a similar replacement. I have a Zipp Service Course I'm using now, but I with a 2-bolt adjustment clamp. I think it's unnecessarily complex, and the front bolt is recessed in a little "canyon" that prevents you from seeing the bolt head unless you are under the bike. It also restricts your allen key turning radius to tiny incremental movements. I hate it.

Here's what I am seeking:

1. A post with at least 20mm of setback, with 25mm or more preferred. As an aside, I don't like the Thomson setback post. It only offers 17mm of setback. I've used one in the past and it wasn't my thing. Also, with a bit more setback I don't have to jack the saddle back all the way on the rails. I sit more toward the rear of the saddle than most folks.

2. A post with a SIMPLE clamping mechanism for the saddle. For some reason manufacturers have tried to make this as complicated as can be (Cervelo, i.e.). I prefer a 1-bolt design like the old Shimano or Campy posts. I don't want to dread doing a saddle change.

3. A 27.2 post. Aluminum is preferred, but I would consider carbon. The big disqualifier for carbon is usually #2 above - carbon posts tend to have complicated clamps. Aluminum posts tend to have simpler setups.

4. Cost is not as much a factor as setback and simplicity of installation/adjustment.

I appreciate feedback on this. Thanks -Mike

2 bolt posts usually have better micro adjust. If you go crazy over having the perfect tilt then go w/ 2 bolts.

I agree with both of these statements

Two suggestions.

1. Try to find another Shimano?

2. Today's modern posts have two-bolt adjustability without the two-bolt hassle because one of them is operated with a twistable adjuster which can be turned with the fingers. No need for three or four hands to get them adjusted. They're not absolutely perfect but pretty close to it. Pretty simple to adjust. I have them on several bikes in the form of Dead Zero 100 and Fizik posts.

These BMC seatposts are superb. The setback is marked as 18mm, but I can confirm it's 25mm or more.

How long does the shaft have to be?

I have a Zipp Service Course and agree with all the shortcomings you found.

But, I really don't fiddle with saddle adjustment so much that I'll give it a No vote. I'm willing to tolerate it's idiosyncrasies for the fine adjustment of a two bolt post.

For a recommendation, if you can find a used Salsa Shaft, get it. Tilt and fore/aft are independently, micro-adjustable with a single bolt saddle clamp that has never loosened on me. That's why I own two of them.

A second vote here for a Nitto two-bolt post.

I'd say at least 250mm.

I had to resist quoting one of my favorite lines from "The Office" in response to your post...

That's the opposite of what I want, actually. I hate the 2 bolt designs that I have used so far. I don't find myself needing the micro-adjustments. I've made due with the one bolt old-school style for years without complaint.

I thought about a used post, but with one just breaking on me, I would prefer to go new.

I'm going to check out all suggestions so far. The Nitto offerings were on my short list actually. I'm familiar with them. Beyond that all of this is learning on the fly. Thanks for the input to this point. Keep it coming.

That clamp design looks nightmarish. How is it? Again, simple is better for me.

I'm with Angry. I like Ritchey posts but mine are two bolt versions. Super easy set up though.

Was about to suggest Ritchey as well. They offer several options with your requirements. I have both single and 2 bolt. No issues with either.

I like PMP and WR Compositi better, but they are both 2 bolt designs.

The Ritchey is well priced and should fit your needs.

I think this is more of what you are looking for.

this is the post i have on my Ritchey, which has seen tons of rough road and gravel, so the post and saddle have seen some real bumps. it was easy to set up and has been rock solid for thousands of miles now. set and forget is my experience with this post.

Good suggestion so far, and I will add another one: Kalloy Uno.
Cheap, effective, visually play well with 7400, easy to set up and use. Single bolt. 25 mm setback. Don’t creak. Relatively unobtrusive logo that can be removed with acetone. Usually can be found for $15-$20 depending upon where you shop. I have several on my vintage bikes and they look great. They are 350 mm long, so I usually trim mine down once I find the length I need for a frame to save 9.5g.

1 vote for Zipp SL speed. Simple 1 bolt torx, sleek, light, but can be expensive new. I've raced 2 seasons of cross on mine and not one slip or saddle tilt.

There are new Shimano 640X seatposts out there that are visually identical to DA 7400 aero posts, generally available in 27.2. If you are having a hard time finding one, let me know I have at least one NIB.

Ditto on the Nitto, both the 83 and the 65 (I think those are the model numbers). Especially good if you need a little more length than the 640X/7400.

Nitto. Another vote for Nitto. I have a single bolt (s65) on my Mxl. Very nice quality post and looks great. I previously had a Ritchey classic (its 2 bolt, but they are side by side rather than fore/aft so easy adjusting) that was also very nice but the Nitto S65 looks better IMO.

American Classic will fit the 'period' look. Mostly a 1-bolt clamp

Otherwise, look for another old post similar to what you have.

I've used the FSA K-force on every bike I've built up for the last 15 years. It can be had with 25 or 32mm of setback. The 2-bolt rocker style clamp allows for her fine angle adjustments. Never had a problem with one.

Thanks fellow forumites for all of the input. I did Google each and every option recommended (outside of the older posts with which I was familiar). Took a good long time last night to research seat posts (those recommended and others that popped up in my search).

I have narrowed my choices to either the Paul Tall & Handsome (98% sure that I'm going with this) or the Nitto S65. I'm also taking a gander at one used option.

The Paul post looks to be simple and durable, with a good amount of setback (26mm) and comes in black, 27.2. I have to confess that I like the kitsch factor of a small company working out of basically a pole barn. I can also get the post easily via one of two local shops. I don't love the two bolt clamp but in this case the bolts look very easy to access, which is a huge plus.

Thank you all again for your time. I received a lot of options that I never would have thought of myself.
