View Full Version : Car exhaust melts carbon rims, redux

Bicycling's new issue "re-"discusses the melting of carbon rims by car exhausts. Seems to be most common (and dangerous) with the recent proliferation of dual-exhaust rear ends.

Is this a thing again? I remember the Reynolds rep telling us about it several years back.

My carbon rims are safe from this I think.

I've blown up mtb tires from hanging too close to the exhaust pipe. Had to race on cross tires as a result which lated 1/2 lap ubtil pinching. I can easily understand ruining carbon rims.

I blew a tire/tube by hanging a new mtn. bike demo that I borrowed from my dealer from a Hollywood Rack. I took great care about positioning my bikes and tires after that one time. I suppose this could also damage carbon rims in some situations like long uphill drives where the engine is working hard and speed and wind flow are reduced.

Everyone knows that Tesla drivers are a superior breed of human and allowed to park any way they wish.

I learned this in 83-84? Toasted a friends PX10's tire. 3 bikes on the back. His was closest. Wrapped in aluminum foil for the return trip. I had to replace the tire afterwards on my dime. My car, I paid for fuel and did all his wrenching anyways. I guess I lucked out that the rim was steel.

My Kuat rack puts my bikes well above the exhaust pipe. But I drive a big ol' Murican SUV with a 2" hitch. The Boyds have weathered well, everything else is alloy.

the straps from my garbage hollywood rack that attached to the spare tire on my cev melted from the exhaust heat too.

BUT please keep your carbon rims away from the high temp exhaust of the coal or natural gas power plant when that stuff is burned, where the electricty for that Tesla was produced. :)

How uncharacteristically grumpy of you, oldpotatoe. ;)

It's possible the power used to charge that Tesla came from renewable sources such as hydroelectric, solar, or wind. The chance the power that moves a gasoline car came from renewables is exactly nil.

Even better, quit driving your car to go ride bikes.

I had a rear tire on my old Litespeed blow out once from exhaust heat. Lesson learned.
