Which pro cyclist do you tend to find yourself channeling when riding?

For me it tends to be 1987/88 Pedro Delgado.
With Yanni/ John Tesh playing in the background.

Channeling -- definitely Spartacus. So many mental movies of him head down, cranking it out on pave. Tommeke, Moser and Terprestra are among others in that same vein for me.

High admiration for Andy Hampsten; can't channel him because he's a classic grimpeur and I'm a taller, chunkier big boy who can't climb worth a darn.

And I hear you on Yanni/Tesh -- guess that dates both of us. (Road made for Animals, Headclobbers, Brain Dead Weasel -- gotta love the titles if not the tracks!)

Our own velotel. That whole puff before ride thing is boss! Plus, the scenery. Oh, the scenery.

I would say mine would be some random enduro rider when I am MTBing. I am so slow and plodding in technical terrain, but the occasional time that I drop off something steepish, I visualize one of those 'Pinkbike millennials' :) doing the same thing with amazing fair and at death defying speed. It's what keeps me going when I safely get to the bottom and look back at what I survived

I usually visualize doing it on a hardtail as well for extra badassiness!

I usually go back and forth between Fabian and Jens.
Then every so often I hit a climb and ride like a champ and suddenly I'm Marco Pantani.

I don't trust that pro cycling is clean. I don't need to channel a pro when I ride. Sometimes, I mutter to myself that Fausto Coppi may have been the better rider, but Gino Bartali was the better person, even if he was probably on amphetamines too. That's as far as I'll go.

I tend to go with anyone riding for the 88 or 89 PDM team (pills, drugs, medicine) and altho I dont do drugs while riding I try to channel inner strength that via the placebo effect... :)

I mean, I aspire to be Andy Hampsten, but that's so far divorced from reality that it never really comes up in practice.

On the very rare times that I'm out in truly bad weather, I think to myself that if I have even 1% of the gravier and panache of Hinault in the 1980 Liège–Bastogne–Liège, I'll be doing alright.

Eddy. After experiencing racing that wasn't happening so much. Then I wanted to be Urs. Now I would be happy to be Francesco.

Kasia Niewiadoma - definitely someone who when things are going well is capable of going all in for the win. It may not work out that often, but when it does it's an effort that you could be proud of.

Stick to your mental image of him riding and racing, and don't be a complete )!ck to people in the rest of your life, and you might be able to get away with it. Or, better yet, live up to his public image from the Livestrong days.

Good one.

Under-rated, Paolo Bettini. Tiny guy with a great sprint, and, damn could he hang in when things got tough.

More personally relate-able Big Mig. Loved watching him. Looked like the lead dog on a sled team.

One and two fifths Andy Hampstens.

(That is, I weigh about 40 per cent than one Andy Hampsten!)
