Another idol bites the dust and Team Nike takes another hit.

Anyone ever hear of L-Carnitine? Anyone taking it?
Web MD (if they are credible), made it sound like a positive supplement.

This.

He is disgusting.

So too is USADA and WADA for allowing only a four year ban.

Money and sport, bad mix

Reflects poorly on all Nike athletes, but I'm sure Adidas or whoever is no different

And let’s not forget Nike’s role in all this. Absolutely despicable company, especially considering its political influence in Oregon. A company that really loves itself prevaricating psychopaths (think Armstrong).

I also hope Mo Farrah gets his see-no-evil a** some punishment. Seven years spent under Salazar, and he trots out his whole charade...

Nike’s attorneys defended him in court and this (see link) is what they allow him to post on the Oregon Project website...note that he took a snippet of the decision that was favorable to him and used it in the statement too. Slime

Here's an interesting tidbit. Salazar had experimented with testosterone gel on his own sons to find the maximum amount of gel that would not trigger an adverse analytical finding. Salazar reportedly (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/01/sports/mark-parker-nike-alberto-salazar.html) briefed Nike's CEO on this. This should have been an immediate red flag. I know Salazar's stock excuse was that he was worried about people sabotaging his athletes, and Nike has released a statement (https://deadspin.com/banned-running-coach-alberto-salazar-briefed-nike-ceo-m-1838671744) that they're going with this flimsy reason. But seriously, nobody would or should buy this.

Parker was also briefed about Salazar's work on infusing L-carnitine. IVs are generally frowned upon, and Salazar exceeded the time and volume limits that were on IVs for these infusions.

Yeah that got me too, he used his own sons as Guinea Pigs, what a guy.

I have never understood why there is so much money in track and field. But the results speak for themselves, the times just keep on getting faster. There was a slight dip after the "doping era" was over, but it's obvious they are still doping.

I have never understood why there is so much money in track and field.

Promotional market for fitness/amateur runners, and the money going to athletes and programs is peanuts compared to big time team sports.

So sad to hear this. As a high school/college long distance runner in that era, he was my absolute idol. He raced so many distances so well. Oh well, I'll write him off now along with so many others.

The OP asked the following question

Anyone ever hear of L-Carnitine? Anyone taking it?

L-Carnitine is an amino acid, produced naturally in the body, that helps in the conversion of fat to energy. Apparently its not considered toxic at the levels that are offered in over the counter supplements that are available.

It would seem like if there is a way to improve the conversion of fat to energy it would be a good thing for folks carrying around a few extra pounds, but the kind of athletes that are coached by Salazar, must be some other benefit.

My Doctor suggested I take it and I did, nothing of note to offer.

What a scumbag, and NIKE too.

Arbitrators wrote about an instance (https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2019/10/01/suspicious-athletes-led-coaching-great-alberto-salazar-downfall/Jb2AeCLljrCuaGC3bSZX7K/story.html) in which Salazar rubbed testosterone gel on the backs of his sons as a way of finding out how much gel could be used before sparking a positive test.

It was after that experiment that Brown exchanged e-mails with the Nike CEO to update him on the test.

The arbitrators said there were ‘‘numerous other examples of this type of ‘medical’ direction in the record of this case.’’

The directions involved calcium supplements, anti-inflammatories, sleep medication, and the consistent pushing of thyroid medicine that is often used to increase metabolism and control weight.

It led distance runner Kara Goucher to comment that she ‘‘was very concerned [about Dr. Brown’s role with the NOP] because everybody on the team had hypothyroidism (https://www.webmd.com/women/hypothyroidism-underactive-thyroid-symptoms-causes-treatments#1),’’ according to the report.

I was watching the world track and field championships this past weekend. One of the commentators mentioned that he is/was currently coaching one of the US female distance runners.

I'll be she's getting a tight sphincter hole right about now...

Another tidbit, and on a tangent that brings this back to some cycling events. Back in 2015, Propublica did an interview (https://www.propublica.org/article/elite-runner-had-qualms-alberto-salazar-asthma-drug-performance) with Lauren Fleshman, a former protege of Salazar's. Fleshman reported that Salazar:

Strongly encouraged Fleshman to get tested for asthma. Fleshman didn't fail an asthma test in a doc's office. Salazar sent her to a doc who had her do considerable physical exertion followed by an immediate spirometry exam. She failed that one.
She got prescribed Advair, a combo corticosteroid and long-acting beta agonist inhaler. Salazar said that the corticosteroid could give her a performance advantage, and that she should be on it year round (the doc initially prescribed it just for racing season). Salazar also encouraged her to change her inhalation technique on the theory that if she exhaled through her nose slowly, it should open up her nasal passages also.
Encouraged her to go to a doctor he knew to get tested for thyroid suppression, on the grounds that she could get medicated for that.

Clearly, Salazar was pushing the rules in the same way that Team Sky pushed the rules regarding medical treatment for at least some of its riders.

Joe Public in America doesn't give two hoots about this because IT'S FOOTBALL SEASON and that's a real sport. Anybody can run but not everyone can play brain-concussion-ball.

Doping is the least of his offenses. In college, he used to play his Bob Dylan albums REALLY LOUD all the time. It was beyond annoying and he wouldn't stop.

Rudy Chapa was a much nicer guy.

I don't get the loud playing of Bob Dylan records. That's small-audience music, not loud music. Reach for the Journey or some other stadium rock if you're going to show off the tower speakers.

Nike has always been scumbags about this stuff...whether via armstrong or track and field or whatever sport they get behind...of course they know it is going on and promote it on the inside...winners sell shoes...winners do drugs to win....losers don't do drugs and don't sell shoes...toss in practically slave wages to make the products and you have a complete ethical fail full circle...that's always been Nike and my guess always will be...

Thanks for posting this video. Something’s been bugging me for a few weeks I’ve witnessed and this crystallized an action plan on a more local, personal level.

Good luck, duff duffy.

I see Nike's CEO has stepped down for what must be a lavishly compensated intermission in his career--the larger issue, the company's growing legend as the bad boyfriend of track and field, goes unaddressed.

From personally dealing with Nike in retail, yes, they are shall we say, difficult. After that experience, I own & will own no Nike.
