Went to VeloFest in Trexlertown and saw this tragedy. Would have been an awesome find otherwise.

Well, there's patina and weathering and then there's "left out in the weather".

That'll buff out.

Aw c'mon.... all yah gottah do is replace every tube and every lug, paint her up all spiffy, then you'll have a sweet good-as-new frame! :p

I thought maybe you were referring to the stem :)
I swear a rust activator is applied to Zunow and 3Rensho frames. That's about the worst I've seen. Shame, it was beautiful once.

It’s only less painful since it’s not my size. Not many Konno bikes in the US.

Looks like the bike was used to deliver letters in NYC by a hipster and sure for the guy the bike showed its character... well their definition of character is different than mine.

The good thing is that renshos colors arent hard to matchs. just repaint and good to go :P

Now that i see the picture better... that frame is toasted :D but it shows its character :P

How much money the guy wanted? like 1000 bucks? because that doesnt worth a dime now ;P

Wow; I’ve seen some bad rust but that’s the worst example I’ve seen. Look at the rust coming up through the headset. Guarantee that stem is stuck solid. Sad to say but that cool frame is toast.

I wonder just why this happened SO severely? When I lived in RI for a while I had an old Panasonic road bike that I kept outside and rode through all seasons including winter salt for a short commute and never saw even close to this kind of damage and I never even wiped it down once.

Yeah, it must have been stored in the shower.

The parts worth more than 50 bucks, not a bad deal if the no holes, and honestly for 50 bucks it makes the restoration project doable. Get new tubes... get them replaced then paint, 700 bucks which is probable what the frame in like new condition could bring.

The seller was asking $50.00.

DCilliams
09-29-2019, 08:15 AM
Not to beat a dead horse but I think those parts were pretty much worthless and when you’re replacing tubes, bb shell and dealing with seized parts you no longer have a 3Rensho.

I would have to see it closer to say that tube replacement was needed

Or just ridden in Maryland over the course of four seasons.

It'd be less farcical if you paid him $50 and he punched you in the face.

Buy it, paint it, clearcoat it, and use it as a lamp or otherwise repurpose it in a cyclist home.

^^^ my thought was the same but I'd wire wheel the paint off of it, hopefully exposing some compromised metal.

My guess is that it spent some time on a trainer.

My trainer rat is an aluminum throwaway frame sourced off CL.... :)

But just think,
'3Rensho road frames are rear and in good shape go for $1200-$1800" not sure what he was trying to say. Probably abused the frame until someone pointed out that at one time it had value.

DCilliams

Yep that’s it. Pay $50 and flip. Don’t see it working out. That frame looks really bad. Shame :(

For 50 bucks I would have picked it up, just to see how it looks after sandblasting...

agree - for $50 I'd sandblast and probably hang up in my shop

Well there goes my "buy it now" option.
I was thinking $1.00, but there's still shipping and tax.
I do miss my 3Rensho. My only cycling sell regret.

With Bilenky's rates you're looking at close to $1000 for repairs. You'd have to REALLY want a 3Rensho to restore this.

Any guesses as to why there is a starnut on the seat binder bolt? Anti-theft measure?

gbcoupe
10-15-2019, 09:32 PM
Flare!
And a slammed 130/40 hideous stem, but can't reach cable stops in their regular position?
I do think this was a hodge podge sweat box basement trainer.

I would use evaporust on it in preference to sandblasting. Still don't see it as ruined. But $550 is ridiculous. I'm not sure I would have paid $50 for it.

Object117 (the seller) is a bike flipper in NY. Usually buys off of eBay and resells on eBay, CL, and pedalroom.

For $50 its worth it for the wall art. For $550 the seller needs to clarify what is seized and what isn't.

I think this depends on what you would want to use it for.
Wall art, yes, Evaporust to limit further mechanical damage.
Using it, careful sandblasting might show how close it is to dissolve.

evaporust will tell you if it has seriously thinned the tubing. Rust is much thicker than the metal that it was created from. As a friend likes to say, an inch of steel makes a foot of rust.
