Yesterday one of my sons and I did the Ride the Rim around Crater Lake. Every year 2 Saturdays in Sept. are set aside and cyclists have all but about 8 miles of the road to themselves. It’s 33 miles around with nearly 4000 feet of climbing. One of the most beautiful places I’ve been to and the ride is spectacular. It’s free and well supported with several rest areas replete with snacks, water and toilets. There were 2000 + participants each day and limited parking so we got a motel nearby in order to arrive early. One of the challenges, in addition to the 7000 ft altitude, is deciding what to wear. Temperature was low 30s when we began the ride a bit before 8. Was about 60 mid day. We were fortunate to have cloudless skies, which made everything even more dramatically breathtaking. The ascents are long and probably average 5-7%. The descents are similarly long, fast and straight. You’re either going up or down. Hardly any flats. If you ever have the opportunity, do it.

We did this ride a few years ago. It really is a well run event. The scenery on a clear day is hard to beat. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190922/0cc2e5690c6e60e9aec324b7ba07c07d.jpg

My first time uploading pictures. Hopefully this works. If there’s any question, I’m the shorter one.

My dad and I did this several years back. Great memory and the photos I took don’t do the blue of the lake justice at all.

Awesome memory you made with your fam.

Have visited but didn't ride there unfortunately. The lake is spectacular. Wife and I were fortunate to visit on a clear day. Incredible views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Just a truly beautiful place. Go if you can , even if just to visit.

Those are amazing shots.

What's your Indy connection with the Nuvo jacket? I used to ride/race with some of those guys back in the day.

Son raced Little 5 with the Cutters at IU and then with Nuvo for a few years in the mid-late 2000s, before he moved to Portland.

Crater Lake is lovely. I've never been there with a bike but remember visiting with my granddad back in the 60s on the way to or from his sister's outside Fossil, OR. The one detail I recall missing from the lovely pix in this thread was the presences of snow on the ground in July.

That is a bucket list ride for me that I will hopefully get to do some day. Beautiful pics and thanks for sharing.

Every bit as beautiful as I anticipated. File under "why we cycle." I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
