A quick request of the brain trust.

I am working on a restoration project of my old Raleigh and pulled off the long since decomposed campy gum rubber brake hoods. The brake lever bases have been completely cleaned.

I have one set of new hoods left and can't for the life of me remember what the trick was to get them on the levers without wrecking them.

If anyone can recall, and could please refresh my failing memory I'd sure appreciate it. These are my last pair of hoods and I don't want to rip them.

Thanks so much.

little liquid soap on the fingertip placed on lever or hood.

Hair spray works great also. It dries hard. Soap will slide if it gets wet.

Tony,

Good to hear from you and thanks!

This rebuild is for the bike that I brought over to your shop when you fitted for me the Serotta...which I guess is going on four or five years ago. I hope that you're doing well, best to you and your family.

Thanks for outstanding fit and these hood pointers. The old Raleigh shall soon be on the road again!

Take Care,

Joel

I'm just starting to plan to restore my old Paramount ('75) and was wondering the same thing. I remember ripping the hoods last time I tried to replace them!

Where did you find the gum hoods by the way?

ebay is usually the best bet. Expect to pay ~80 -- those suckers are expensive.

Good luck with the restoration.

Definately wouldn't want to f-up that install!

Thanks!

A number of years ago I came across a pair for the then outrageous price of $18. At that moment I thought long and hard about the purchase. They've sat in a sealed plastic bag since then.

By the way, the install went with out a hitch, or more appropriately a snag. :)

If you want the Paramount to be period correct; you'll need the gum hoods
with the world logos. They can be twice the price of the shield logos shown
in this auction. Modolo gum hoods are still reasonably priced and readily available. Besides being more comfortable...but they are not Campagnolo.
