All of the modern frames I have seen seem to be 4130 chomo , this one ,I assume is a bit older and is Reynolds 653 , has canti s 700 c wheel size etc pic to follow .

Yeah the early ones (Surly turns 21 this week) had some form of Reynolds tubing. Now they have their own blend of 4130 'Natch tubing. The frames have otherwise stayed the same geometry wise. Chances are you have an early Cross Check. Is it green?

I would think the 653 would be a little higher end and lighter , I assume it was for cost saving to go to the 4130 .

I have an Eddy Merckx in Reynolds 653. High quality tube set.

Early Surly Cross Checks (https://surlybikes.com/uploads/downloads/CrossCheckFrame.pdf) were Reynolds 631, not 653
