Rob English has that title (probably), but Tange is claiming it anyway (http://yasujirobike.com/product_detail.php?sn=27).

Erratum aside, at $1,600 for F/F, it's a damn nice stock frame.

Good looking bikes.
On their website, the Notcher and Admire are especially nice. A Notcher with Admire paint would do it for me. Hopefully ride as well as they look.
I had an Azzurri Phantom (I think same as a Slide Away) for a short bit. Beautiful frame! Supposedly Spirit tubing. I think that was half right. It certainly wasn't light, but it wasn't lively either. Sold it.
Have a Banke, Tange Prestige Super Lite that is fabulous!
I'll wait for a second had to test. Another unicorn.

Good catch.
Not a bad color, but wouldn't be my first choice.

Not to mention placing the chain on the big ring for the glam shot.

IMO they are claiming that is the lightest steel bike because is the lightest PRODUCTION steel bike???

English is a custom guy, no production line of bikes there... and that makes a difference.

Sideline, but can anyone clear up for me what the deal is with Tange "Prestige" tubing is these days? I was kinda excited years ago to see that Soma was speccing it in their steel bikes, but then heard that modern Prestige isn't the same heat-treated high-end .7/.4/.7 tubing that it used to be. I also hear that Tange the company got sold, and that Kaisei is made up of their old engineers.

But here they are, making PR again -- implying that it's a high-end steel. Can anyone clarify?

kaisei was Ishiwata, not Tange. I have heard the same about modern Tange tubing, but that doesn't mean they can't make better stuff.

for steel? My Pego Marcelo hits 1900 - without the fork.

BTW buddy of mine talked to someone who rode it, that Yasuhiro. says its quite a noodle, clearly best used by persons below 60kg.

isn't it 1700 without the fork? That would be stupid light if it includes the fork.

that was my first thought when i saw it.
cool bike. but someone my size will never experience a ultra light steel frame.

A noodle it may be, but boy does it look the business. I actually like the pastel pink on it too.

Hmmm... I wouldn't say that 1700 grams for frame + fork is ridiculously light. I've got a steel frame (True Temper S3 custom T.E.T.) that weighs 1375 grams, which has a carbon fork (with steel steerer) that weighs about 375 grams, so 1750 grams for frame + fork. And that's for a size 54cm. If the same frame/fork were made in 52cm, it would probably be just about 1700 grams.

I've been using this bike for my long distance hilly rides for the last dozen years or so. While it isn't as stiff as some other bikes, I wouldn't call it a noodle. I've had it over 50 mph numerous times, and its handled perfectly fine.

yeah, but S3 rides like...well, pasta. if you're over 70kg or put out a modicum of okay power, it wiggles. it resonates in all the not-good ways (and some good ways). if you're light it's good. we still have some of it stashed away for smaller riders.

1700 frameset is quite respectable. depending on if they weighed with HS, 1250-1350 is nothing to scoff at. a columbus spirit bike in the same size will push that number in frame weight alone.

THAT SAID...it's a rim brake bike. a rim brake "production" bike. i'd like to see a 1300g steel frame built for discs. that isn't an english. because...well.

Well, my weight varies between about 68 - 72 Kg, so I guess I'm in the "okay" range. But the original frame being discussed is a 52cm, so its probably intended for smaller and lighter riders.

don't get me wrong, it's fine for what i'd characterize as "mellow riding", but under hard efforts, it flexes in really funky ways. i could never jive with the way it felt like it was about to snap in half over high-torque efforts. tried mixing it with spirit and it just felt...weirder.

moot point anyway, seeing as it no longer exists.

Light weight is fine and all, but as a goal by itself is rather silly.
