View Full Version : Trek 770 - build list - does this make sense?

This is probably a dumb question, but I want to make sure I'm not forgetting something with this build.
I have a 1985 Trek 770 and I want to bring somewhat current, but keep the vintage look. Downtube shifting stays, and I'm thinking about going with:
Dura Ace 7700 – Crankest
Dura Ace 7700 – BB
Dura Ace 7700 – FD
Dura Ace 7800 – RD
Dura Ace 7800/7900 – DT Shifters
Dura Ace 7800 – chain
Dura Ace 7800 – F/R brakes
Dura Ace 7400 – brake levers
Dura Ace 7800 – Cassette
Is there anything I'm missing with this build list?
Thanks for you help!

The DA 7700 crankset won't fit a small ring with fewer than 38 teeth - and that 38 tooth ring isn't DA. You can get a 50t DA ring, which I did, and I'm running the 50-39t crankset.
I went with an Ultegra BB, rather than the DA, partially for $$ reasons, but the Ultegra BB will last pretty much forever with no maintenance.
I went with an Ultegra 12-30 cassette, but with the short cage 7800 RD I used a Roadlink to get the clearance for the 30t cog. Shifting is fine, and I'm using DA 7800 levers.
My DA build was my first Shimano build, all others were Campagnolo. I used DA7400 hubs, and swapped the freehub for a 7403 so that I could run a 10s cassette. The 7403 freehubs are basically unobtanium, but I lucked out and picked up a 7403 hubset. My first set of hubs were basically NOS, so I swapped the freehub from the donor hub onto my hub.
Good luck with the build.

If you are talking about true 7400, non-aero levers, they won't work very well with later calipers. If you mean 7402 non-aero brake levers, you're good.

Speedevil thanks that’s what I looking for. I’m trying to figure out the major components and this helps.

54ny77 - yeah the pink frame. I believe the actual frame is 531c tubing.
csm - when I bought the bike it was more of a frankenstein build. Upgrading to current Campy 10 speed would be difficult.

With your advice rccardr, I’m good... now! Thanks.

yes it was, it was the cream of the crop, stunning bike. "investment cast" lugs (i can remember the marketing-speak from those days), it was just so so nice. buddy of mine had one, who wrenched at a local shop.
i was a young lad at the time and saved all my pennies from working various jobs, was able to swing a purchase of a trek 560 of the same era.

The 600 series was 531C, main triangle 531 with stays and fork 502 from what I remember. 700 series is all 531.
