View Full Version : OT: Classic Album Covers

Just got done reading a review of the Meatloaf musical "Bat Out of Hell" in the New Yorker. One paragraph was devoted to a description of the album's memorable artwork. Which got me thinking about other classic works. Off the top of my head:

1) Floyd. Dark Side of the Moon. Probably the most replicated of all time.
2) PE. It Takes a Nation of Millions... Title says it all from one of the most gifted lyricists of recent memory.
3) Nirvana. Never Mind. A couple of notches behind Floyd in iconography...

Others?

NOFX's Heavy Petting Zoo gets my vote every time. But the alternative cover and title of Eating Lamb is just as good.

The 1st album I ever bought -Journey Escape. I sat there listening to the opening track, stared at the album cover, and was blown away. I spent many nights sitting in my room with headphones on, listening to that album, and figuring out Neal Schon's incredible phrasing and solos.

And then, there was the Candy O album cover. I think that may have been where I picked up my love of redheads. ;)

Saville, yo!

I'd argue that Unknown Pleasures is the apex of all modern album covers since it encompasses simplicity, abstraction and distillation. Postmodernism scoffs at all three of those ideals.

For the most famous postmodern album covers something like London Calling where the appropriated the so-called King of Rock and Roll to announce their own smashing of Rock and Roll conventions, or something even earlier like Warhol's Velvet Underground cover.

But it's a classic cover which might just be the most instantly recognizable in the last 40 years or so, more for the design than the band themselves.

Saw what you will about the band after this release, but I still find the cover and music striking....

I love the music of Arvo Pärt and the ECM label really went minimalist on the covers, maybe to better align with the music. Not classic covers in the intended sense but this is classical music!

Funny, I had the exact same thought when I saw the Devo cover. I love 99pi and that one was great; I particularly enjoyed the quote from Chi-Chi when asked whether he had listened to the album he received in exchange for permission: "I listened to it…once."

He actually did a bunch including a whole series of blues albums for yazoo records. He even recorded some records of his own playing and illustrated the album covers for that. In addition, he created some compilations from old 78s he had collected.

Al said I should post this one.

I like the neon sign too. Radio City is considered to be the iconic Big Star album cover, with its William Eggleston photo. It almost prevented the release of the album due to Stax's objection to the "pornographic" poster on the wall. It probably would have been better for the success of the album if Ardent hadn't prevailed in getting Stax to release it. If that had happened they might have found a partner who would have actually gotten the record into stores.

Shocking that you'd choose Zappa given your .signature.

I don't have my copy handy to photo but I'd go for One Size Fits All.
And, while I love TAAB, my favorite Tull cover is Stand Up.

One Size Fits all is one of my favorites - great songs start to finish, but especially Po-Jama People, San Ber'dino, and Andy. There are contributions to conceptual continuity on the cover, e.g. Zircon, the nose star.

Some good songs on Stand Up: art from woodcuts by James Grashow.

A fine old fiddler from Grayson Co., VA by the name of Emmett Lundy. Recorded in 1941. Provenance of the tunes date back to late 19th century - early 20th century, and therefore qualify, for me, as Classic. I have a ton of this stuff, mostly from reissues of old 78's of some of the earliest recorded fiddle music - or any music for that matter - dating back to the 19 teens and 20s.

Tony T I would rub this sleeve all over everything you've posted, except Technique (and Neil Young), of course :p

The first album by The Durutti Column originally came in the now legendary 'sandpaper sleeve'. This was a nod to situationism whereby keeping the record in your collection would physically damage your other records. Of course, the record could be fitted into an outer plastic sleeve and your other records would be safe. Sandpaper sleeve copies also came with a bonus flexidisc (by flexidisc kings Lyntone) FACT 14c entitled 'Testcard' and featuring two tracks written by Martin Hannett.

loved the thread. It caused me to dig in the basement and find the (few) LPs I had saved . I was surprised by the number of Grateful Dead albums (Live, Axomaxoa (sp) Terrapin Station, their first one.... and the Pink Floyd... the first one, Umaguma, Obscured by Clouds, and a few others. Pat Metheny's Off Ramp. Cream. Hendrix. Basically things that were memorable. But to add to what I consider the quality covers, here are a few more that may resonate with some of you.

First is the Leo Kottke solo first album on Takoma records. Amazing guitar work. If you find it listen to Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire.

Second, the original Jethro Tull 'Stand Up'. The cover was cool, then of course you open it up and there is this silly fold out of the band 'standing up'. OK, why not?

the uriah heep record with the mirror cover is iconic i guess

Maybe the all time worst record cover. If they had half a brain the cover would be simply a mirror but no.. they add the title and then someone thought their audience needed to see a pair of eyes to understand the concept.

Question I have with all this, now, is: Are we talking about 'Classic Album' covers, or 'Classic' album covers?  :)

Second picture down- I spy "Spirit of Eden" by Talk Talk. Beautiful cover art by James Marsh and one of oddest but most influential (and sublime) albums of the 80's. Mark Hollis- the lead singer and main writer- died earlier this year. A very sad day indeed.

Another one of the first albums that I bought as a kid - Asia.

One of the coolest album covers from one of my all time favorite singers - Marvin Gaye...

The Heavy Metal band I was in from 1991 to 1993 was called The Unknown. I replied to an ad in BAM! Magazine that the guitarist and singer had placed for a drummer. My audition was calling them, putting the phone on the ground and me playing through the first three songs off of Forbidden’s Twisted into Form record. They liked my drumming and we started gigging once the rest of the lineup was solidified. We rehearsed first in Cotati then Angwin so the bulk of the clubs and venues we played were in the North Bay Area.

I went through my keepsakes box, I tend to save everything, even old set-lists. We recorded a three song demo at Prairie Sun studios in Cotati and sent it off to Metal Maniacs. To my surprise, a few months later it was reviewed in their Firing Squad section that bands would send demos to. I wish I still had a couple couples of the cassettes we had printed and also the issue with the review in it. Not too long after that issue we got a letter from another band called The Unknown based on the East Coast that threatened legal action over the name. I read up all about copyrights, etc. but we ended up breaking up near the end of 1993 so I didn’t follow through.

We also opened for Ice T’s Body Count at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma on their first tour.

Mark Zonder had a killer White GMS double bass 7 piece setup with Fates Warning. I knew of him from before with Warlord but I didn’t know he played traditional grip!

To me it's a wink wink cover that says "we're the future; we're the past." The cats in the band were conservatory trained squares and yet we wouldn't have EDM without them (I think they still call it EDM).

It´s beautifull. Bike racers are close to Kraftwerk´s idea of man machine.
