What non cycling product or service have you purchased as a result of seeing it on a kit or a banner in a race?

I believe my first cycling influenced purchase was a Tag Heuer watch after seeing the 7-Eleven team wearing them and the logo on the jersey.

More recently, Mapei tile grout.

Probably some others too that I can't recall.

Never bought any Ryobi tools though.

I am definitely influenced. I bought Colavita olive oil after making a conscious decision on the brand based solely on the fact that they sponsored a cycling team.

I do draw the line though and couldn't buy bedazzled Rock & Republic jeans.

Colavita, Bissel, Mapie, and Jelly Belly come to mind as purchases that were made based on cycling sponsorship. Of course 7-Eleven.

I've probably been influenced by advertising in cycling for cycling products. But probably not for non-cycling products. Of course, since cycling at the top level is a Euro-centric sport most of the advertising is Euro-centric as well, so many of the products and services advertised may not be as available in the US.

I thought about something similar to this the other day.

An insurance company, GEICO, has made many a commercial that I have enjoyed but I have never been to their web site and probably never will. Even though they have spent millions and I have liked the commercials.

No banner in a bicycle race has ever gotten me to inquire or buy their product.

IMO the cycling market is so super saturated, be it bicycles, kit or gear that it's hard for anything to stand out. And if it does stand out, searching the internet for it against it's competition, it still may not be bought by me because something seemed better and/or was cheaper. We are living in a world of over abundant choices, a slick ad doesn't get good mileage. And just a banner alone is hollow in our connected age.

I think it was a 1987 edition of Winning Magazine that listed Tour teams and their sponsors. That was great but also disappointing that cool sounding names like "Systeme U" was just a supermarket.

Before the internet all these logos on jerseys, shorts, caps and banners were a bit of a mystery.

This thread is educational. I am now aware of what some of these companies make.

I just bought one of those goofy tie-dye EF tech shirts from Rapha. Guess I'm just another gullible instagram hipster millennial that you guys keep complaining about.

(it was on sale)

Non-cycling stuff, I guess USPS but they're the best option anyway.

Honestly, I'm kind of surprised to hear what some of these sponsoring brands even sell. Like when I found out Saeco sold espresso machines. I had no idea what Mapei was until this thread.

I also bought the red and green tag heuer because of the 7-11 influence but also because they were kinda cool looking and fairly unique at that time.

Not so much anymore. I do not have tv reception, almost never listen to a radio, and have ad blocker apps. The only flyers I ever look at are local grocery store weekly's. Though I am not in buying mode, I still look at bikes and bike stuff here, Ebay and local craigslist. Actually have never made a c'list purchase.

I bought Colavita oil when they sponsored the Jamis continental pro team. At the time I sold Jamis and rode a Jamis bike, so I thought it was cute to use 'their' oil.

An acquaintance rode for The Peanut Butter Co's team. It helps that they make some of the best PB I've ever tasted (and I'm a peanut butter fiend), but staring at the back of her jersey mile after mile didn't bias my purchasing decisions against them either.

I love the words 'Jelly Belly' plastered across the front of a bunch of 135 pound beanpole bellyless cyclists, but I don't eat them. BUT I did sell a TON of them at a toy store I used to manage! BUT I don't think my customer's purchasing decisions were affected by the fact that JB sponsors a cycling team.

To be honest, most of the time I have no idea what service or products the sponsors actually provide. They seem to be mostly based in Europe (and I'm in the USA), or perhaps just outside of the scope of my narrow lifestyle.

I dunno if advertising had much to do with it, in some cases yes, but in many cases just normal life here:

We bank with Caja Rural.
We buy milk from CLAS (Central Lechera Asturiana) all the time.
Sometimes we buy said milk at Lidl
I used to own a Saeco espresso machine.
I have had Segafredo coffee before (not great).
I've owned a number of Cannondale's.
I've used Soudal siliicon's/adhesives during reno's
We had a Teka stovetop before our reno's.

I'm sure there are many many more. When I think of em I'll add to the list.

Without having read all the way through this thread to see if anyone else has said this, but for me the best advertising for bike stuff is by far what all of you say on this Forum and on VSalon. That is what gets me started typically.

I do recall once seeing some interesting handlebar tape on a Team Sky bike and hunting it down. Was some diamond patterned Pinarello Most tape. So yeah, I guess the bike racing websites, mainly Cycling News and Inner Ring, occasionally have some influence on purchases. But those aren't ads either. So actual bike advertising? No, hasn't influenced me too much.
