so i'm watching on tv. why the hell can't the bug on the screen include % grade and mph and temperature? don't cycling enthusiasts all want to know about the actual meaningful stats?

Major league baseball is all erect about exit velocity. who gives a crap?

Nope. Don't care at all about that stuff.

I'd like to see more of that kind of thing. I loved the GoPro footage from the riders in the TdF this year. I'd take more of that too.

On screen telemetry makes something like a tour at least somewhat interesting for a person like me who can’t watch a single stage of any tour without falling asleep, but then I remember roadies will be interested in things like tire psi and aero advantages of sock length. ;)

Also check The Tour of Utah's website for route specs. Generally speaking domestic race coverage sucks, essentially compared to European coverage. You should see Tour de France on French public television...... it's insane.

It would be the bees knees to be able to see wattage, speed, heart rate, % grade and such. I've seen samplings of it via some of the one day races that GCN covers. It's pretty cool.

Well I can tell you that the climb up Powder Mt is a freaking bear. I live at the base and I hate that climb. Ride stats showed a max grade of 16% but my Garmin has always registered 21% about 5 miles up. It get's really, really tough.

Half of the route around the lake they did twice is what I ride pretty daily. Pretty level with small rolling hills all along it. I ride solo and have to work my butt off to avg 20 mph, these guys are in the 30+ mph range.

By the second lap the usual afternoon winds were blowing strong. So once they left the sprint zone in Huntsville the had a short climb out of town and then turned west right into the wind coming off the lake. That wind was either in their face or hitting them broadside until they headed up Powder Mt.

I shot them at the house when they went by and then took off on a 7 mile chase the opposite way around the lake to try and beat them to the sprint zone. Their route was about 10 miles. I still fell short by about a 1/4 mile as I had to pull over when the 6 man breakaway was coming. And I averaged 22-23 mph for that 7 miles. The boys can fly. Side note, I saw very few bikes with disc brakes today.

There was also a truck wreck and rollover on Powder Mt. The authorities did a herculean effort getting that cleaned up before the race got there.

Those pics and your knowledge of the route are great, thanks for sharing them!

Beyond having a stats crawler on tv coverage I’d love to have more info like this, some sort of “local insight” from seasoned riders in the area about the routes and riding conditions.
