View Full Version : What is the best stealth e-bike?

I'm looking for an e-bike that does not look like an e-bike. I want to avoid, if possible, the super big down tube. I'd prefer it to be quiet also, so that riding partners won't hear it, and wouldn't know that I was on an e-bike.

The Pinarello Nytro has a huge downtube. Is the Pinarello Dyodo still made? From the pictures, it doesn't look like the downtube is huge. Maybe it is the best option?

The only issue is, it says right on the frame what the model name is. Would be better if it said Dogma so it could fly under the radar.

The Orbea Gain pretty much looks like a normal bike.

You can get bikes with the seat tube motor that most closely resemble regular road bikes. Not sure which brands. You can also have it retrofitted if I recall.

I’m sure it’s not because he wants to kick their arse quietly.

“How’d you get so fast ?”

“Oh, I’ve been working with a coach and stealth training”
“Why ? Do you think I’m on an e- bike ? Nahh”

If you mean the Vivax System (aka "motor doping") Signature Cycles is the US distributor. https://signaturecycles.com/project/vivax-assist/

According to them, "Unfortunately, the motors can only be installed in frames designed specifically to accept the motors. The Vivax website indicates that it looks like an easy install on an existing bike. This is incorrect."

It's not cheap: "We are only selling the units as upgrades on new bikes, where the frames are designed to accept the units. The cost for the motor and the upgrade to the frame start at $4500.00. At this time we are working with Parlee, our carbon manufacturer and Seven Cycles, our titanium manufacturer. Both manufacturers have designed frames that are properly reinforced to accept the motors, without changing the ride characteristics of the bike. A Seven Axiom S Titanium frame can be adapted with the Vivax Assist motor for $11,780.00, including a Shimano Ultegra R8020 Hydraulic Disc Brake group."

Davidson Kullaway here in Seattle does a lot of Vivax custom builds. They are very stealth. Battery fits in the water bottle and rest of the frame tubes look pretty normal.

Not quite ready to give in but it or something like it will be my next.

Will be interesting to see how hub vs mid-drive pans out.

The Orbea Gain is the only one I have seen in person, never would have guessed it was an e-bike until the owner proudly announced it and pointed out the rear wheel. He's 73 with a 40-year-old son and 17-year-old grandson who ride competitively in the mountains of CO and it allows him to keep up with them while maintaining his fitness for ski season. Apparently, they refer to it as 'The Enabler' lol

What had been called Gruber is now named Vivax. So yes, it's the same device.

I'd like to think so. However, the OP represents a very real and significant customer segment. Manufacturers are sinking lots of money into these things for a reason.

https://media.giphy.com/media/Ob7p7lDT99cd2/giphy.gif

Fair enough. Really, I won't use it that often. Just after hard interval sessions where my legs are wasted, but I need to get home. And also, I don't want my KOMs to be suspect because people see me on an obvious ebike. The giant looks promising.

An e-bike will do a lot more for your speed than the aero socks you wanted to buy.

https://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?p=2573846

Again, going for some KOMs on the local trail and want all the advantage I can get. BUT, I will not use the electric power for any KOM attempts.

My wife has a cruiser E Bike...An Electra Townie Go 8D with extended Townie geometry. A very basic cheap (no fenders) heavy (49 lbs with battery) E bike cruiser. It looks like what it is. A very comfortable cruiser. Bosch Mid drive....with assist only. (ECO, TOUR, SPORT, and TURBO)

At first I just wanted to ride it around neighborhood once in a while.

But recently have decided I really like riding it. Upright position....seat like from a John Deere tractor. Townie geo puts your feet forward....so you can ride that wide seat without rubbing inner legs. And definitely not stealthy.

So lately been taking it more and more on my morning 30-35 mile rides. Just enjoy riding the thing for the joy of riding thru the countryside. I don't turn up the assist much (mostly ECO or TOUR)....go about the same speed and use about same calories as my road bike. Wide tires....upright position.... and all that bulk take energy to keep moving. Thinking about getting my own now. What I don't want is an E Bike that looks like a road bike. I either ride by myself for exercise and enjoyment....or with a bunch of older riders who push it as much as they can. And I can still keep up with them Ok on my road bikes. So my use for an E Bike....riding enjoyment and exercise....may be different than yours.

Have decided there is another group of riders that can benefit from a bike like my wife's. I constantly meet older riders on recumbents or even trikes (there are large groups of them around here....packs).....who can no longer sit on a road bike saddle....for one reason or another. I bet some of them would be comfortable on the saddle on my wife's E Bike with wide saddle and "townie" geometry. I have ridden both 2 wheel recumbents and 3 wheel trikes. They aren't perfect either. And trikes are harder to transport. And the trikes with E Assist can get hard to load in pick up truck bed.

This does not compute - you want all the advantages you can get for KOMs but you won't use electric? So then why get an electric bike which is heavier? I'm all for ebikes, but is this an April fools post?
