Could someone help me understand the Chorus 11 speed line up. I am under the impression that the group changed mid stream and that some years might not be compatible with other years. Is this also true of Record and Super Record?

Chorus and above shifters and derailleurs from 2015+ are different than earlier models. Don't mix them.

The early model left shifter has more clicks (6-7), so it can operate a triple. 2015 plus models only have three, so they only work with new FD.

What is the best way to tell the difference?

2015+ derailleurs look very different. The levers...well, the original hoods on the 2015+ have white Campagnolo logos. The shifting feels different as well, hard to tell visually other than the hoods. (which might not be original)

Oh, and it is said that you can mix pre and post 2015. I know for certain that 2015+ front derailleurs work fine with older levers.

Fronts should work. Rears won't - we made that mistake at the last shop where I worked. An "A" appears on the shifter body on post 2015 levers.

All the post-2105 pieces have an "A" in a square box which is supposed to denote comparability.

For the shifters:

<2015 the letters of the logo (on the lever) are in white font on the carbon background
+2015 the letters of the logo (on the lever) are black font which is "framed" by white decal

Hope that makes sense.

2015 saw changes in derailleurs for Chorus and Record and SR..altho 'some' say that these ders are not compatible with earlier groups(including the Campag mothership folks)..not true..I've even used 11s ders n otherwise 10s Campag setups, works fine..

The cable pulls on the two versions of the shifters are not the same. The newer models pull more cable. I have precision equipment set up to measure cable pulls.

If you mate a newer shifter to an older RD, the result will be some over travel, which is more tolerable than the under travel that occurs when a newer RD is mated to older shifters.

To reduce the under travel, I grind the threads on the clamp bolt down to the root of the threads, where the cable contacts the bolt and pull the cable tight against the clamp bolt. This shortens the lever arm length a bit and increases travel. I did the same thing to make a 10 speed RD work with early model 11 speed shifters.

Correct and why 11s rear der works fine with 10s ERGO..

Correct again..I have done the same with 11s ERGO and 10s rear der..

BUT the ? was about pre and post 2015 11s ders..and they can be used in either direction...I even put a 2015 front der on my Moots with friction shifters..yikes, it worked just fine..with a 9s chain...

If the pre and post 2015 RDs are made to work with different cable pulls, the 2015 and newer RD should come up short on travel, if used with the older shifters. That's what I found with this combo, so I ground the clamp screw down and it definitely worked better.

This is general info, not aimed at any specific question.

At my last shop, we tried using newer Chorus 11 shifters with the earlier Chorus 11 rear derailleur and it did NOT work well.

This sort of begs the question - if you know what DOES work, why screw around with something different that MIGHT work? Just do it the right way.

He's got friction shifters and 9 speed. He likes to tinker.

Old Potatoe knows far more than I will ever learn in 10 lifetimes. I believe him if he says it will work. Same for using shimano cassettes and wheels with campy brifters - 10 sp brifters with 9sp I believe - Bikes aren't magic and it is just a mater of mechanical gears moving cables and a chain with a guide. There is more than one way to do it and tinkering can provide many solutions. The manufacturer wants you to do it 'their way' because it makes them money and they can train mechs one way. That does not mean it is the only or 'correct' way.

I would follow Old Potatoe's advice anytime. He has never steered anyone wrong before, plus he can fly jets.

Chorus 11 is trash. Spend the extra $100-200 on Record. Or if your hands and wrists can handle it get Ultegra 8000.

Pretty funny..unlike shimano, Chorus is Record with less carbon, SR is Record with more titanium and some ceramic..ultegra, altho compatible with DA and 105 11s, shares not much of the stuff above and below it. If you have hand and wrist issues, Potenza all day or Centaur..
