Bon chance!
I wont be there but New England Randonneurs has 17 registered, including a rather fast tandem team that i believe is aiming for the mixed tandem record (of course its not a race...)
Apparently the youngest, oldest, and fastest finishers have been NER members as well.

Tailwinds to all who are doing this ...

Seems like an amazing event. I would be amazed if I could simplify life enough to attempt the qualification events.

The 90 hour group mostly had tailwinds both ways in 2011. Don't think we are going to be so lucky this year, but it has occurred to me that my 2011 experience means there could be headwinds both ways. In fact, an earlier forecast had headwinds at the finish, but that seems to have changed.

I really like the course, and it's great how much support you get from people. Looking forward to the crepes. And riding with 6500 of your closest friends isn't bad either.

One of my favorite experiences in 2011 was descending a hill at 3am and hearing a noise that sounded like I had something stuck in my tire. I was about to panic, when I realized there was someone by the side of the road who was clapping for me. Never did see them.

I had 5 to choose from, but took the S&S coupled Co-Motion for convenience. Still in the box, so no pictures... I had a Quickbeam for a while, it was a little too stiff for me.

I'm following a mixed tandem team and a few other riders from New England Randonneurs. The tandem made Brest in 24:33, though their pace has been dropping. Some other NERds are also tearing it up

...and also tracking Paceliners who provided bib numbers...!

I wonder what was the time of the first finisher. I found one rider who finished in 49:00.

I heard that there were headwinds on the way out to Brest. I hope all the riders have tailwinds on the return!

I hope all the riders have tailwinds on the return!

Unlikely, because the prevailing winds are westerly, but this often turns into a land breeze in the evenings. On top of that, the route out of the controle diverges from the incoming route and tacks around the northern outskirts of the city, e.g. you do not ride back across the famous bridge.

In 2007 we were very much looking forward to a tailwind out of Brest, but by 7 pm this had turned into a headwind/crosswind.

Looks like Jan Heine dropped out of the leading group pretty early . . .

Tailwinds to all who are doing this ...

No such luck. Fairly strong headwind all the way to Loudeac and I was looking for a nice push on the way back from Brest. The wind shifted so a headwind on the retour also though not as strong as in the way out.

I finished in a little over 87 hours but had 7 hours off the bike each night with overnights in Loudeac (out and back) and Mortagne.

All in all, the weather was as good as you can ask for on a 1200K. It got really cold at night (I ride through the night twice), into the low 40's and a damp fog that made it feel even colder. AFAIK, 27% of the field didn't finish, about normal for a 1200K.

A fantastic event.

I hope you'll write a ride report. Did you ride by yourself most of the time, or in pacelines with geared riders?

I've done a Super Randonneur series on a fixed gear, but it's hard for me to imagine doing a 1200 on one, not just because of hills, but also because having to pedal constantly aggravates any problems with saddle or chamois.

First 150k or so with friends, then opportunistic pacelines with solo riding as I tend to be faster on climbs and slower on descents compared to geared riders of similar overall speed. While I can keep up with geared riders on a shorter ride, efficiency becomes more important on a ride like this.

I will probably write a detailed report, but may post it on a randonneuring group as it may not be of general interest.

Was thinking about this today - esp the fixed gear element. This must be epic - not being able to coast for days of riding. I suppose on some level this helps keep you engaged/awake, but this must be punishing as the hours wear on.

I couldn’t do this ride, but romanticize it. It would be a Randonneurs rite of passage !

I dnf'd after 1000km after suffering for about 24 hours with swelling knees that had me walking up some of the hills. I found myself envying the people that couldn't get their card stamped a little too much. But it was great. It was so much easier this time now that I have ridden other 1200k rides. PBP 2011 was my first 1200k.

Rode Fixed in 2015. Seemed easier. Was in better shape.
Might have been easier this year if I discovered my dragging brake before mile 540.

Constantly pedaling will NOT keep you from falling asleep while riding.
The nice thing about riding fixed is the temperature fluctuations at night do not affect you as much.
