View Full Version : Campy upgrade?

I have a bike with Campy Super Record that has a 27T rear sprocket. I have not ridden in the last 4 years or so and I need to get back on riding. Unfortunately I don't live in the Mid-West where the roads are mostly flat. Is there way to replaced my rear derailleur to accommodate a larger rear sprocket? If there is, what is the largest rear sprocket I can get for this group? Yes I already have a compact crank.

TIA

there are mid cage RDs for campy 11s and the normal cage rd can for sure run cassettes to 29 tooth. some folks get them set up well with 32tooth rear cassettes as well.

lastly, one can try any number of shimano/sram based cassettes to 32 teeth

11 speed? A short cage derailleur has limitations that a medium cage derailleur can overcome enabling you to go up to 30 or 32 or so. How big is your front small ring? The compact configurations have advantages.

A Wolf Tooth adapter can get you more room in the back to go up to a 34 or even 36T, but you'll need a longer chain too.

I'm using a mid-cage Centaur RD with a Wolf Tooth and 11/36 cassette (on a shimano cassette body) paired with a 34/50 up front, and that gives a very low gear range. Shifting isn't as crisp as SR11 12-25 paired to a 39/53, but what is?

Yes 11 speed. So are you saying by replacing my RD to Mid-Case I can achieve a 32T rear sprocket?

I have 34/50 front ring.

How does this help? Capacity is the same for the RD, which is what limits the gearing, right?

Called Wolftoothcomponents and according to the person I spoke to (I think he is the owner) said that

a) He can't guarantee his product would work with 11. They were design for Shimano.

b) Even if it does work, you can't use double chain ring.

:help:Personal opinion is that a RoadLink combined with a short-cage Campy RD and a bit longer chain should get you to an 12/32 with a 34/50 without exceeding the capacity of the RD in the 34/12 combo. Your mileage may vary, and be sure to check those limit screws.

roadlink and midcage good to at least 34t in the rear.

I ran a roadlink with Chorus 11 and a 32 cassette, no problem.

The roadlink adapter spaces the RD down from it's normal position so that the RD will clear a larger cog than usual. The need for it depends on the distance between the rear axle and the threaded RD hole in the dropout. Some are shorter, and some are longer.

It does not increase chainwrap capacity, just adds clearance. You absolutely can run double rings up front, but depending on the RD chainwrap spec and your cogs, there may be some chain sag in small-small. Not a combination used much if at all on a road bike, so may be a problem that doesn't really need to be solved.

Have a road link with campag 2009 rear short cage derailleur (first gen 11 speed iirc) that allows me to use 11-32 on cassette with 46/34 up front - not as crisp shifting as per above comment but gives me the clearance for 32t and runs smoothly once in gear

I would try a 32 cassete on your short cage to beggin with. Depends on your frame but in my parlee it works without the wolftooth. Works perfectly too, all gears are usable.

Also flat is boring, welcome the climbing :)

For a budget version:

Some not so great reviews of Miche cassettes but I use them with no problem.

So having a campy compact crankset and 11-34 or even 11-36 shimano/sram 11 speed body on a campy RD, which chain should be used? 11 shimano/sram or 11 campy chain?

This.... Just non sense start buying stuff when no needed.

BTW, always you can go triple.
