Just put a hitch on my van and am thinking about a very simple hitch rack.

Does someone make a 2" receiver mount with a fork mounted beam? Basically a fork mount roof tray mounted horizontally to a 2" square mount with an anti-sway bolt?

something along the lines of this picture i found online, but simpler.

if this does not exist i will be breaking out the welder and making one.

I don't know of one, but have some old roof rack trays in my garage. As opposed to fabricating from scratch, I had considered get a rack like this: https://www.harborfreight.com/500-lbs-steel-cargo-carrier-69623.html?cid=paid_google|*PLA+-+All+Products|All+Products|69623&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&mkwid=sKE0GgBvZ|pcrid|327822404853|pkw||pmt||pdv|c |slid||product|69623|&pgrid=71439424048&ptaid=pla-296227499965&pcid=1688396772&intent=&gclid=CjwKCAjw7anqBRALEiwAgvGgmxnuDwPWfk3TMfIo5B8z Fq3fRI7-a4H-EyzQmo6CL0CdYNVO5WX3jhoCHjoQAvD_BwE

And then attached the roof rack trays to it.

Why not just buy that mount and put the 1 1/4 to 2" adapter on and call it a day?

1 bike or 2?

I suspect the design above is on purpose for ground clearance and getting your bike away from the ground.

Thule mad a rack called the Space Station that was very similar.

I used one for years on multiple vehicles with 2” receivers with great success but, unfortunately, I sold it about 4 years ago.

Mine had the additional 2 bike extension.

Maybe you’ll get lucky and find one on eBay or CL

Thanks Bruce, i'll keep my eye out for one of those, they look nice.

The hitch receiver carrier is an idea, but ultimately a much bigger piece of hardware than i had in mind. I just want one tray out back to throw my bike on for quick trips.

i'll see what else i can locate!

A quick Google finds some NOS for Space Stations

Good luck

And then attached the roof rack trays to it.

I had one of these for a while. Drilled holes in the upper rails on each end to install fork mounts. Cut a piece of PVC in half to act as a "tray" for the rear wheel. Could put two bikes on it, and in a pinch could still double as a cargo rack.
The only drawback was it that was NOT light. Had it on the back of a Volvo XC90.

a friend of mine bought this and modified it himself with some straps, drills, nuts&bolts, maybe some welding...

I have something like that. It is from th 90's. It even has a mount for a tandem.

It is made by Hollywood.

Maybe you'll get lucky and I have Bruce's Space Cadet, with the 4 bike extension collecting dust. Wanna come out to Central PA and ride gravel for a day or two? It will be truly awful to ship.

Do you REALLY want your dropouts taking the load in a sideways path?

If you're going to bolt a roof rack carrier on there, may as well bolt on one that holds the bike by the tires.

Less chance of breaking off fork tips

Years ago Yakima made a rack called the Hitchfork that was this style. It fit into a 2" receiver and used 2 BOA fork mounts. It was the inspiration for a rack that I made for my Subaru BRZ that threads into the tow hooks ports instead of using a receiver. A friend of mine has had a Hitchfork for years but other than his I have not seen one in a long time. My guess is that when receiver hatch racks came out that used an arm to come down over the front wheel now used by a lot of companies it was seen as a better and easier solution for disc brakes and thru axles so you ended up with a rack that accomplished the same thing, secure fit to the vehicle as well as secure fit of the bike without anything touching the frame but a design that worked for more styles of bikes.
