We're getting to the close of another year, I find myself asking how much time I spent in the saddle. I don't have a working computer on my bike, so I don't have a clue how many miles I've done. Let's just say it's more than 1000. How 'bout you?

Probably between 9000 and 1000 give or take. A long time ago, I was obsessive about keeping track of miles, but no so anymore since it's harder to keep track with multiple bikes, etc.

Met this years goal (6,500) on yesterday's ride. I'm at 6,540 and heading out for more in a couple of hours.

Finished my last 06 ride a few hours ago with a 55 mile, 5,600 feet of climbing to finish the year at 6,800.

Discovered a new toy this week. We have single speed Bianchi San Jose bikes on the Computrainers and really had no realistic thoughts about using them on the road. But we each have only one bike and Lois' shifter broke a spring so it has to be rebuilt. So I took the bikes off the trainer, put good clinchers on them (ugh!) and we took a 17 miles ride on Friday (one big hill). Yesterday we did about 28 miles with more hills, some which, at one time ,gave us trouble on a geared bike. No problems. My bike weighs 24.24 lbs without the water bottles. Today we ride from the house. We live atop a big hill so we will see if we get home without the hike a bike. Anyhow today is our 39th wedding anniversary. What better way to celebrate than with a nice day and a nice ride.

We had a 5000 mile challenge in one of my local clubs this year, so I tracked the mileage for that and hit 5000 in the first part of November and stopped counting after that. Probably a few hundred more by the time the year's over. It's supposed to hit 65 today and tomorrow though, so I'm not done yet!

I didn't do many long rides this year, so I don't consider it a heavy year, but I always seem to be between 4-6,000 when I bother to track it. I probably won't ride with a computer next year except on rides I need one to follow a cue sheet.

I'm between 4300 and 4400. I live in Michigan so I havent got as much riding since september. My wife got me a light for christmas. That should help for next year. My goal for next year will be 5200 miles. That will be a 100 a week.

I no longer kep track or care to. I do know I have a 20 RT commute. I average 130 or so days a year commuting plus at least one weekend ride, and a few on the Mtb bike.

quite a bit. I usually try to ride about 100 miles a week regardless but I don't ride in really cold weather nor will I ride in the rain....I'll finish in the rain but I won't start in the rain, makes no sense to do so when I have sooooooo many nice days to ride. Heat doesn't stop me but since I usually ride alone I don't see much sense in riding when the conditions are cold and miserable. I run a GPS unit that I can easily switch from bike to bike so the tracking thing isn't a big problem. I hit 4200 yesterday but because I was off the bike for almost two months I won't hit my goal of 5200 this year. I was at 4100 on October 4th when the doctor said "no riddie" for about 60 days. But, ya know what (?), I really don't care because the miles I've gotten in this year were all fun! Got to ride several new places and get to know some new riders....found this place and have really enjoyed reading about everyone's adventures and opinions!

Jan. 1, 2005 until yesterday, Dec. 16, 2005: 7095 miles.
Nov. 1, 2005 until yesterday, Dec. 16, 2005: 7790 miles.

The significance of these numbers?
I started riding a noseless saddle Nov. 1, 2005 and all miles since have been done on it.

Is it a well designed noseless saddle?
For me, it got me back on the bike after surgery (Sept. 1, 2005). Maybe for some, this design is a good answer for casual riding. However, it gave me the time in the saddle to see how/what improvements and changes should be made.

The importance of the miles on the noseless saddle?
No talk on my part, I have the mileage and experience to back my own noseless saddle design ideas and apply them.

Dr. Pruitt and I have been playing phone tag :crap: ...my designs WILL work.

Time for a ride... :D

One of my goals for the Masters program I started this year was that I continue to get 5000 miles of riding each year.
I've been successful. ;)

I'm averaging 108 miles per week and should continue at that rate barring illness, freak weather or a crash.

And I've learned a little in my MSN program along the way, too.

Six miles shy of my goal of 9,000 miles. Should easily reach my goal tomorrow and add a couple hundred more miles to that by the end of the year. One nice thing about south central Texas is that you can bike year round so it is easy to roll up the miles if you keep at it and "the good lord is willing and the creek doesn't rise."

The best thing I did was to not attach the bike computer when I switched to a Serotta in June. I found myself riding more days enjoying not having specific mileage targets per ride.

Having ridden the roads around my home for years, I still know the distances and also realize that my average speed has remained constant on a monthly basis for years.

I'm a bit over 7,000 for the year, which is more than last year despite having less "free" time.

I would estimate about 3500. I don't have computers on some of my bikes. The Serotta got about 2000 miles this year. My Strong got about 500 or so and the Merckx and Look and Croll the rest.

All in all just a shadow of the past. I would like to triple my mileage.

i didn't own a proper rode bike this year (though my new frame is being built up right now and i'm picking it up tomorrow evening!), so my miles are nowhere near years past, but i know my commuting numbers are just over 2700 miles for the year and i have another 1200+ miles documented in longer rides, and probably 1000-1500 in undocumented around-town riding.

all of it was fixed gear.

Good year but not a great year for mileage. I crossed north of 5K yesterday which was my new goal as of September when it became obvious I would not match the last two years at over 6K.

Met my goal this year ... exceeded 3000K (not including indoor training mileage). It was a particularly exciting year for me because after 20 years on a Vitus/ Mavic Pro Group/ GL330 tubulars, I built my first Serotta Ottrott ST  .

Now I'm even riding in the winter (but not rain). Also getting TT Rollers for Christmas (from the family) so I can ride all winter and develop better form and balance.

Ok. You guys are making me feel bad! Year's ago I used to ride 5K a year, but I just don't seem to have that much time now. I will only ride 1500 miles this year. Getting hit by a car in July and ending up with a knee injury definitely didn't help me out this year, but I am thankful to be nearly recovered now and back on the road. I did manage to run 600 miles this year too, but I missed the 1/2 marathon I trained so hard for due to the accident. It will definitely be on my list for 2007, as well as at least one bike event.

My commute minus 6 weeks so I don't overestimate, 45 weekend chillout rides that are always a min. of 45 miles minus 12 weeks so I don't over estimate, 40 longer weekend rides minimum of 75 miles minus 12 weeks so I don't overguess + a few long rambles

160X45ish = 7200
45X40 = 1800
75X40 = 3000
a few long rambles here n' there = 800

But seriously, I gotta concur with tv-vt and I'll even add this: personally, I'm of the mind that if you live where you have winter (I ride consistently about 7 months a year) and manage to ride over 5,000 miles in a year, you might want to consider whether you are shorting your work, family, or sleep.

Not sure really, I turned off the computer this year. I've been riding pretty consistently through the year--not every day, but the typical week has had me on the bike at least 5 days and there weren't too many departures from the norm. OTOH, this year's juggling of commitments has left me shockingly devoid of longer rides (we're not just talking an absence of brevets, or double-centuries here, but rides of 60 miles or more). Since July, I've had a basic commute of 16 miles rt, to which I frequently add a few miles--say, 20 total. I could make a guess, but I'd slap a pretty big error bar on it. Mebbe between 4 and 6k miles?

Tom
12-29-2006, 08:11 AM
and if I pretty much make it to the end of the street I'll have covered more then 6500 miles.

Next year? More long rides. This year I rode two organized centuries, I rode two rides by myself longer than 65 miles, a few rides up to Lake Desolation, 55 miles from my house, and every other ride was 35-50. In other words, I got out a lot but didn't do much that was terribly exciting.

I rode two races, the first time I tried that. Terrifying but fun. I definitely need to go down to the Tuesday night rides and get used to it. I'm convinced most everybody else in the race group rides like idiots but it's quite possible I'm a bigger moron than anybody so I figure I better find out. Next year I'm going to try a few more because I was surprised to find I can hang, and I could be pretty successful if I fix one or two glaring weaknesses. (Like not being able to go fast...)

Next year I'm definitely going to go out and ride many long rides. At some point next year I am going to ride 200 miles in a day, and I want to be consistently able to ride upwards of a hundred. Why? Because I want to. No other reason. I figure if I quit most of the alcohol, it'll be easier to hit the road at first light and get back home before the day's totally gone. One day the year before last I encountered some character out on the road that had ridden to Lake Placid on Friday, the Ironman course on Saturday and back home Sunday - a 400 mile weekend. I'd like to be able to do something along those lines.

to you. I completed 12 centuries in 2006 and had a great time doing it. It was fun to watch my cycling pals rally around me and help me complete my next month's ride while scoring their own personal successes as well. I also had plenty of folk join me for a portion of the ride, typically they would do 60 miles and leave a couple of us to finish the rest. I think of all the centuries, I only had one where I rode 10+ miles on my very own. I'm glad I did it. I'm glad it's over.

For 2007, I too have the double century looming in the future. I can't imagine doing it. Too many times we'd complete the century rides, collapsing in the parking lot at the end, and laughing at the notion that we could jump on our bikes and do the whole ride again. I think I'm really going to have to dig deep inside to pull off this paticular stunt. May and June are going to be very ride-intensive months.

I might take the month of July off.

On New Year's Day, there's a "few" ;) of us that will be doing our first brevet qualifier of the year, a 200k (125 miles) in Bonifay, FL. (90 miles west of here). They're calling for thunderstorms on Sunday...it'll be nice if they stop by the 7:00 a.m. start time!

Oh, did I mention...I haven't trained for this?!?! :crap: Send lots of good vibes, please! :D

2089 and a shot at Sunday. Where do you guys find the time? I do like the idea of a double century, that might be the goal for 2007.

hypnos! You've been out racking up the big miles! :p That's probably why we haven't heard from you in a long time.

We're getting to the close of another year, I find myself asking how much time I spent in the saddle. I don't have a working computer on my bike, so I don't have a clue how many miles I've done. Let's just say it's more than 1000. How 'bout you?
I rode my last of 06 rides yesterday and made 8,000 for the year. A bit behind last year but I'm please with any safe miles. Happy New Year! JohnnyG

Just finished my last ride of the year too. 30 miles of flat and rolling with a couple of decent hills on my fixie. Finished with a few ticks under 5400. But the quality of today's ride, like so many of them, make the numbers truly meaningless. Beautiful day, almost cold but easy enough to dress for, brilliant sunshine for most of it, gorgeous rolling farmland and woodland, plenty of horses and a few other riders to say hey to, nothing else to ask for in a bike ride. Now I'm pleasantly tired and looking forward to watching some football or doing something equally uninvolved for a few hours.

Happy New Years, all!

My last ride of 2006 was my first real club ride ever. l managed to hang on for 15 miles, and then turned off with one other rider, and rode with him the rest of the way at a saner pace. Kinda fun in retrospect, but staring at the wheel in front of you at 23mph is not my favorite kind of cycling!

Total for the year was 6110, which is a lot of hours at 12 or 14mph!

I almost quit at that point as well, but thanks to Starbucks and my daughter, who brought me a warm change of clothes, was able to keep on going.

See you this year! Has to be good weather after that miserable day!

road- over 5K
mtb- over 500
both pretty much consistent year-to-year.
