I’ll be on crutches for a few months and now that I am finally back home the
practical challenges this presents are becoming apparent. One is just when I need to carry a few items around the house. I’m thinking a messenger style bag that I can easily swing around to the front would do the trick. I need a smaller sized one not a really big high capacity bag, easy to open up, somewhat flexible material, etc.

Any recommendations?

fanny pack? Not a cheesy 80s one, but the new MTB style ones should have good capacity.

You're right. When I broke my hip I found mobility was painful but not impossible. Moving objects from place to place doubled the challenge.

Not sure how much you have to carry, but this looks interesting.

I spent a winter on crutches a few years ago and used an old US claymore mine bag to carry small items when necessary. It worked well and one probably can be found at an online surplus store. The design is really basic and should be inexpensive. If you need something bigger check out the surplus Polish bread or gas mask bags.

This might fit the bill: https://www.patagonia.com/product/lightweight-travel-courier-bag-15-liters/48813.html?dwvar_48813_color=TATE&cgid=luggage-messenger-bags#tile-11=&start=1&sz=36

I got one when another patagonia bag I had got destroyed when it fell through my front rack due to my own stupidity and got wrecked in the spokes - I asked if they could repair it and they said they would replace it - I even said yeah but it was completely my own fault that bag failed and they said no problem we will still give you a new one. So it'll come with a good warranty too. It's light and expands pretty big and is very easy to swing around.

Thanks! It was quite the adventure. While laying down on a flight sounds nice, lying/sitting on a medical type stretcher for a long period of time is not so comfortable. The crew was great though...lots of good conversation, and made sure there was plenty of good food: the catered food/box lunches the good folks at the Shannon, Ireland airport was amazing. Best box lunch Ive ever had!

Good recommendations everyone! Keep ‘em coming. I’m actually really liking the “sling bag” idea. A messenger bag looks too bulky but something like this looks nice:

Thoughts?

I like the sling bag idea better than the messenger version- more likely to stay put where you want it until you need to access it. Having spent over 3 months on crutches following foot surgery a while back, I definitely empathize with the challenges of taking stuff around with you. I snagged a cheap sling bag for trout fishing at EMS a couple of months ago for a quarter of what that bag runs, but ymmv.

And here's another suggestion that should come in even handier, given that it's summer ;-) There's a second zip tie that you can't see that runs from the mounting bracket through one of the crutch adjustment holes.
(grrr- can't make it orient correctly, but....)

I’m dealing with this now, and found messenger bag straps to be too short. My wife, who’s hobby is sewing whipped up something on a longer strap that I much prefer - less movement and easy to grab things.

Should be easy enough to have a tailor modify strap length on an existing bag.

I would go with this open bag long strap approach. easy to reach in, square so can carry papers/magazines, good volume.

buying a bag - you are probably overpaying for what you need, both function and time frame.

welcome home

I have a couple dozen Bike to Work Day mussets I use for such needs. Some as shown, most smaller. One is yours free if you'd like?
