What's everyone up to over the upcoming holiday weekend?

let's see pictures of those BBQ action shots, epic bike rides, poolside antics, kayaking acrobatics, etc.

what are you looking forward to over the next few days??

Who's got Friday off, not me.

Riding with my wife Thursday morning followed by watering the yard so the neighbors don't set my house on fire (fireworks legal in Petaluma, ugh!).

amateur backyard fireworks just annoy me. they are never anywhere near as col or impressive as the public displays and they irritate my dog.

Touchy subject for me. Since moving here both a back yard and front yard fire have been started by amateur, drunken show-offs on the 4th and yet we continue to approve the sale and use of fireworks. No beer or booze for me on the 4th, or I'd very likely hurt someone.

62 miler in the morning and then working in a level 4 prison at 2. Hopefully the only fireworks are from the surrounding festivities and not the thugs/gangbangers trying to kill each other. Well maybe that isn't so bad either.

I am working. Last day of the San Diego county fair in Del Mar so I will be here keeping the computer network going and my wife will be at home telling our poor dog it will be OK. Sooner or later since the illegal fireworks started about 2 weeks ago and will go for another week back at home.

i may be signing my own death warrant, but we're heading down to the jersey shore for the weekend. only the current plan is for me to ride down and my wife meeting me there with the kids, dog and minivan.

it'll be over 100 miles for me, and likely a TON of traffic for my wife.

hope we both survive!

on a plus note, i've got a pretty new SUP to take out and a new bar bag that finally fits my super short head tube, so i'll have snacks for the ride:)

I organized a club ride in the Santa Monica mountains, typical 60-70 miles with 6-7k of climbing, then had a d'oh moment this morning when I realized that they close Glendora Mountain/Ridge Road to cars because of fire risk, now it's too late to change. Angry, I don't know whether your route or Pacific Coast Highway is more dangerous, neither seems like a sane choice.

Then west and wewaxation before heading next door for BBQ 'n brews with our neighbors. There's a great fireworks show put on by a the country club nearby that we can see by walking a block or so; also a ton of other ones visible from our bedroom that go well into the night.

Have fun all.

i agree!

i think my ideal 4th of July, and the best way i could think of to celebrate America's birthday is to find someplace in the US where i could not hear fireworks!

open to suggestions!

check the forecast closely, it's going to be rather unsettled this weekend.

Hoping that it stops raining and I can get some work done. I did a short ride with some friends on Friday, checking out access points to put their canoe in a local creek. This 40? acre lake would normally have 5-6' tall corn this time of year. Thousands of acres in my county will not be planted this year. Forecast is rain 5 days out of the next 7, so great for canoeing. Friends had a nice 12 mile paddle Saturday on a creek that would have been tough going most years in late June.

wow. thanks for sharing that insight. quite the opposite of what we typically think of farmers hoping for.

i understand, at a totally different level, that wishing/hoping/praying for weather can be beyond frustrating, but i dont begin to comprehend my livelihood depending on the weather.

hoping things go as well as possible for you guys out there!

Plan is to hang with the family and friends today and tomorrow. Sunday I am likely riding some dirt roads with BB Dave and his significant other from my house. If anybody wants to do an easy paced 30ish mile dirt/rough road ride feel free to contact me!

I was chatting with my wife about it this morning. She's a road hound but Cape Cod on July 4th weekend is insane. I'm not sure it's worth it. We might try to stick to the slightly less insane bike path with our kid trailer.

We typically tour up the coast on our tandem to a friend's summer house near Mount Desert. For this year's Downeast Tandem Tour we are driving up the coast, and after friend's house we will be car camping three or four days in Cobscook even further up the coast and doing day rides. We plan to hit points along the easternmost continental US-Eastport, Lubeck, West Quoddy (which, oddly, is THE easternmost point), and over to Campobello Island in Canada.

the family is going to Florida, so I have a reprieve from the yearly slog to the fireworks which I dread so much. OTOH, I can only leave the dogs for a limited amount of time, so that is going to constrain my activities.

Yer killing me man. Maybe do a red white blue cockpit on the ottrott instead?

Commie? try Navajo!

Once while on a family trip to the grand canyon an American tourist asked to take a photo of my dad -they thought he was a Navajo indian!!

Truth is, I am pretty deeply patriotic. I think being a generation from the boat is a constant reminder that things like going to an A's game or riding a nice bike is a long way from walking behind a water buffalo in a rice field.

Same with my adopted daughter...she's swim instructing at Stanford for the summer instead of greeting customers in some Anhui province department store. Yea, us immigrants are now college educated with advanced degrees thanks to the founding fathers and the american experiment

As the saying goes, there is no one so zealous as a convert.
I think you're right that this zealotry may fade by generation (both my sets of grandparents emigrated from Eastern Europe early in the 20th century), especially as we enjoy the fruits of the experiment as you say.
I'm going to stop here because my next comment would cross the line of political civility that our mods work so hard to protect.

Did an early morning group ride with pals. My rear deraileur cable broke at the midpoint rest stop - I should have known, shifting has been feeling kinda weird the last ride, jumped cogs and during the ride, keep having to shift a few clicks to get to the gear I want, it was tell-tale sign of it about to give way. anyway, rode the last 20 miles entirely in my 39-11 gear. fortunately, no major hill along the way, was able to keep up and follow the group back to the start.
