Googling and sifting through info is proving tedious. Do any Paceliners know of a cycling club in Manhattan that is kid friendly?

My 8-1/2 year old daughter is constantly wanting to ride more and expressed interest in racing. Back home in DC I knew the cycling scene better and knew the clubs.

Any suggestions?

It has been a few years but if I recall most clubs will not take kids under 13 even with an adult present on the same ride. With that said, this might be a great place to start:

FIVE BOROUGH BICYCLE CLUB (https://www.5bbc.org/)
New York's Friendliest Bike Club

New York Cycle Club has an affiliation with something called the Kids Ride Club. Not sure of the details, but if you email president@nycc.org or vp-rides@nycc.org Peter or Jerry can probably provide the scoop.

Sadly, the CRCof A development team has 14 as a cutoff.

The track racing is an appealing option. I get to buy gear and not feel self-obsessed!!!

There were certainly kids as young as 8 in the Grant's Tomb Crit this year. I cannot remember the clubs from their jerseys, though. Lucia, who is the president of CRCA, would have ideas for you. She is very keen on making racing accessible for everyone. Also, Tara Parsons is super helpful, sees a good cross section of racing and racers and would be a good person to reach out to.

Contact info for both is here. https://www.crca.net/board-contact-info

This forum is awesome. Have a few emails out to those suggested here. The track racing is 4:30 on Mondays, which means I may have to completely gut my Monday workday in the summer as I live and work in Manhattan so it would take an hour to get there.

But I love my little girl more than my job ...

Happy to help!
Also, check out the USAC rules on juniors racing on their website.

Jeff Poulin is the NYSBRA President and could direct you: https://www.nysbra.com/about/contact/
I don't know that organization at all, but I get updates from them every now and then.

I was thinking on my ride yesterday, "Where have I seen a Junior's Race?"
FYI, Alex Kochatau from Team Verrazano is running the Randall's Island Crit series this summer. Min age is 14, however. If your daughter hasn't seen a crit, Randall's Island is close and an easy bike ride. The juniors field is generally a small group. https://www.bikereg.com/weekendrandallsislandcrit0

Charlie Issendorf runs both the Floyd Field Tuesday Series and the Lucarelli and Castaldi as well as the Castelli Series in Prospect Park on Sat/Sun mornings. There are no juniors races there, but Charlie knows the NYC race scene pretty well. I get emails from him when he has races, but I have never had a personal interaction with him. https://www.nycbikeracing.com/

Update: Star Track seems awesome. Downside is 3:00 pm on a Monday out in deepest Queens when you live and work in Manhattan. I skipped half a day of work, pulled the girl out of camp at 1:00. We were early and so maybe there is 15 to 30 minutes we could conserve on, but it is a haul to get out there. Over an hour on public transit. I told my team that I would be out of the office for the second half of Mondays for the rest of the summer #goodtobetheboss

StarTrack and CRCA Juniors programs are great! Glad you made it to the track!

Several attempts have been made to try to bring velodromes closer to the big populations of NYC, but getting a large enough space and getting community support have proven challenging in the past.

Let me know if your child is looking into Startrack or you need some contacts. There are lots of great people to help out.

Welcome to the velodrome!

I can’t tell if I was happier watching her do this or yesterday when I asked her if she wants to go back and there was no hesitation.

A couple more sessions and she will be killing the track, I suspect.

We are hitting the Hudson River Park bike path this weekend if anyone wants to join!
