I am thinking of a way to make use of a set of surplus 5700 ten-speed shifters and want to know if there is a compatible MTB derailleur that would allow my to use a 11-36 cassette. Or if I was crazy, a 11-42t cassette?!?!

Any feedback is appreciated.

Any Shimano 9 spd (Deore, LX, XT) should work. 10 spd will not.

Any Shimano 9 spd (Deore, LX, XT) should work. 10 spd will not.

To add: any mtn bike rear derailleur from 7sp up to 9sp will work if the limit screws let the derailleur travel far enough.

The last gen of 9sp rear derailleurs didn't have a barrel adjuster, so you'll have to put one inline.

I've used 8sp XT derailleurs. I've used 9sp XTR derailleurs. Works great

9 speed like mentioned above for the 11/36. I was running that for a little bit on a bike. In order to go really big in the back, I think you need the appropriate dongo from wolftooth (https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/collections/drivetrain-1).

I’m not sure what the combos are but with some clicking you should be able to work something out.

Or one of these gizmos..plug into the hole in the rear der for the housing..works fine.

This is all good advice. FWIW, I've been running an XT M772 rear derailleur for a couple years with an 11-36 without a Wolftooth or other dongle. You may need to experiment with the B screw setting to get it dialed, but it's worked great for me.

10 spd? Index or friction? I ask because I've found that shadow design mtb derailleurs are fussy with road components when indexing - 10 speed.

For the original poster, I'd recommend the M591 - non shadow design. I run that on my 10 spd commuter.

FWIW, I have M772 for sale. It's close to new. PM for details.

Best,

If adjusting the B screw does not give you adequate spacing, a Road Link should.
