View Full Version : The most desirable, lust-worthy bike if price is no object

The Pinarello thread and looking at Steve's white/orange beauty got me thinking about the ultimate in lusty desirability.

Let's say you win the lottery. You can:

Buy any bike you want
Equip it any way you want
And it can be off the shelf or custom

What's your choice?

Dream big.

Since we're speaking in hypotheticals... if I won the lottery, I wouldn't stop at just one bike!

go fast road bike, I'd look at Crumpton,
go fast mixed surface, Titanium Zanc
long relaxing day out on the bike, Kirk with the terraplane seat stays.
travel bike to take in my private jet, FireFly
Full Squish mountain --- jury is still out.
For a hard tail mountain bike, I'd look to Zanconato

I guess we all have a little Jack Brunk in us.

My compound on the Mediterranean would have a number of bungalows along the beach with fully stocked bars, kitchens, and workshops attached. I would fly in Marco Bertoletti, Eric Estland, Dave Kirk, Mike, Dave Wages, Meech, Mr. Potts, and a few others to come stay for some R&R and build me some bikes. Stay as long as you like guys!

Just sayin'

Although I don't know if this could be pulled off even with money, I'd want a Nagasawa road bike because he doesn''t make them any more.

Other than that, the next thing I really want is a Crumpton disc road since I'd have a gravel bike at this point, but maybe I'd just get the Crumpton all road. I'd build it with the next generation Shimano Di2. I'd probably go with the Enve wheels with carbon hubs. Even with unlimited money, I'd stay with more mainstream parts versus lightweight exotics, so it would probably be an Enve post and stem, though maybe different bars depending on shape.

As expensive as this would be, it's not really much more than people are paying for off the shelf bikes.

With this hypothetical unlimited supply of money, I might also have a different house in which I could have a 2 car garage set up as my bike studio or even something of a stand-alone building. I'd still want more bikes beyond what I've referenced above.

Aside from more bike stuff and a house, I'd still be a thrifty person with all the money though I would give very generously to causes I support.

My custom bike lust has largely been satiated over the years and I'm just on production bikes now a lot of the time. Still ride my Zanconato and Indy Fab and there's another Zanconato waiting to be built up, but mostly I'm over it.

That said.....

I've got serious lust for one of these Seven Cycles 622 SLXs. I love the throwback 1980s aesthetic. I could definitely see getting one someday if the circumstances allow.

My kids are growing and we’re having increasing amounts of fun riding tandem together.
Our current double is an ancient Fisher purchased here.
We love it but if a bunch of money landed in my lap I would get a Calfee carbon tandem with all the goodies.

If I was just buying for myself I would hop in the car for a short drive to No. 22 for a titanium disc all road bike. And since I want to try Campy EPS let’s throw that in the package.

Probably an all-road Crumpton or Ti/carbon Firefly. If the latter, then definitely gotta get the matching Ti stem and seat post. SRAM Red AXS or whatever it's called. And two carbon wheelsets... 700c with skinner slicks and 650b with wider knobbies.

A custom, Di2, carbon wheel shod Co-Motion Macchiato (https://co-motion.com/collections/tandem-bikes/products/macchiato)for my wife and I and a custom No22 Great Divide (https://22bicycles.com/collections/made-to-order-bikes/products/great-divide-made-to-order) for me.

I'd lean towards either a Crumpton or an Argonaut. Curious about custom carbon.

My speedvagen is close to my dream - did not have the money for dura ace, discs, di2 and spendy wheels or it would be the dream. I did choose the paint upgrade at the expense of a few of these items though, call me shallow

Clean39T

My first purchase would be a lugged Kirk Onesto w SR12 mech/rim - done up as a full-on road-racer.

Second purchase would be a Crumpton w SR12 disc - again as a full-on road racer.

Third purchase would be an Ellis Strada Fango for all-road duty.

Fourth would be an Argonaut for the same.

Fifth would be an Allied Able or Lauf True Grit.

Sixth would be an English travel bike.

.
.
.
.

More disciplined spending, selling stuff, and some eating of beans/rice for a few months could get me at least #1 and #5 as first priorities - and I'd settle for a Pina or Factor or ? for #2 in a pinch.

But if money were no object, I'd progress through the whole list in order.

First upgrade would be to my wife's bikes. Getting them exactly how she (well, and me) likes them. They're both 9 speed and she's happy with that, but I'd go with 11 speed and get electronic on one of them.

Then maybe a steel Hampsten or two, based on my Merckx MXL geo...

Coupled Moots with Dura Ace. Coupled because it has to fit in a compartment on my Mig-21.

Can't tell if serious but I do know that there are some civilian owners of Mig-21's and the like. If so I can only imagine that money would not be a problem ;)

As for me it I would probably find a custom builder to make me a nice lugged steel frame, full Dura-Ace with Lightweight wheels.

I do like Moots CX bikes too.

Well I have a Meivici, Colnago EPS, and a Moots Compact so I certainly cannot complain about crap. But! If money were no object I'd love to have a Firefly, Indy Fab, or Baum in Ti or a carbon Ti mix. A lugged steel ride from one of the premier builders in the U.S. would be great too. And that Seven 622 SLX is incredible as well. Boy, I'd have a heck of a time deciding.

I like the immediate transition from one bike to full wish list but I'll stick with the OP's question. I'd go find whoever bought that 49cm Ciavete Responsorium with SR 11 and Boras and pay whatever it took to liberate it from them. Then I'd offer a Paceliner a really sweet deal on a Duende.

Since someone mentioned cars, I'd be very happy with a Carrera RS, and would echo Seinfeld's line about his:

"It's a dead guy car. I bought it from a dead guy and no one's getting it from me until I'm dead."

Good choice.

I picked up a Weigle frameset from a forum member a little over a year ago.

Spent this last winter on the build.

So far, I love it.

FWIW My wife has a MAP and I was a little jealous. Mitch wasn't building at the time, so I went with the Weigle.

I was lucky enough this winter to find my dream bike thanks to this forum (deal from across the hall). I didn't know it was my dream bike until I got it outside. All winter, I rode it on my Kicker thinking the size wasn't quite right - I fiddled with the seat and seat post, even swapped out the fork. It turns out the bike is perfect. Fits perfectly, rides perfect: it's fast and comfortable, aero and compliant.

It's a Argonaut road disc, built up for a manager at Enve for the 2017 NHBS and tricked out with all the latest buzz words: Enve 3.4 discs with King hubs, the newest Dura Ace and Ultegra/Stages Di2 mix (love the new smaller hydro Di2 levers!), Enve everything (of course), King headset and bottom bracket, etc. So great.

I just completed my 2nd annual 200 on 100 on it. No issues at all. Rode perfectly. I did a fast paced group ride last week where I set a bunch of PR's, including a hill I've probably ridden up 1,000 times. It's such a great bike!

I'm so thankful for this forum and for the community it provides. I've gotten to ride/own some really great bikes that I could never afford new thanks to you guys. Thanks! And - if you ever get the chance to ride an Argonaut, I highly recommend it!

at a certain point there are so many that are so good that you are really swapping one great experience for another, but if price was no object, maybe I'd commission Ernesto or the Pinarello family to do a custom carbon road bike using all their technology but with more traditional lines, something alone the lines of the best updated C50 style bike that any Italian builder could make. It would ride more like a Colnago than a Pina. Maybe that's a Gaulzetti.....

Great thread! First I did not win the lottery, but when I turned 50 I decided to treat myself to my dream bike. I spent quite a bit of time thinking about what I want from a bike and the more time I spent thinking about it the more I realised that I prefer classic lines, mechanical groupsets, rim brakes, robust materials, and beautiful paint. I love the idea of supporting a local craftsmen over a big brand off the shelf bike so I started looking around Australia where I am and I decided on a Baum. My first instinct was to go with a Ti frame but after a few discussions I was convinced that a steel frame would actually provide me with the ride characteristics that I was requesting. I made a trip (combining it with a holiday) for a very thorough bike fit and analysis of my riding style to decide on the geometry and tubing set and pick colors, what a great day that was, so much fun. I enjoyed hanging out at the factory, getting to meet many of the staff including Darren himself, checked out all of the old school tooling they use, gazed wide eyed at the shelves and racks of tubing they keep in house to choose from. It was sensory overload, good thing they had plenty of coffee to offer! I originally was going to get Record 12 speed bit I couldn't get used to the thumb shifter so I will stick with Ultegra 8000. I really think the quality of shifting is fantastic with both when setup correctly and the main difference is the ergonomics. I went with Enve seatpost and bars, 3t stem (-17 deg), Hed Belgium tubular rims, Chris King hubs / BB /HS all in polished silver.

Now my order is in for a Baum Ristretto and I will patiently wait.
:p
And a bit of eye candy, not mine, just an example of the work they do.

I'll be honest, it feels a bit arrogant to post in a "Dream Bike" thread when I already own a Richard Sachs Signature road bike w/ Campy Record and a Carl Strong TIG-welded S&S-coupled eTap-equipped road bike

...but why should that stop me from dreaming?

Yes, a Crumpton is absolutely next on my list. Either an SL road bike or maybe a Type 5 all-road/disc. Or maybe both, what the hell...

Would also someday love to get a raw Ti version of the coupled Strong. Probably by Strong, 'cuz he already knocked it out of the ballpark, but if not him, then a Hampsten, or a Firefly, or an Ericksen, or a Moots, or...

And call me crazy, but I really want a Velokraft NoCom:

Yes: the Della Santa for which I had been in the queue for several years (the delay entirely at my own doing, nothing to do with Roland). Unfortunately i took my own sweet time in getting him the basic fit info. He was always cool about it, said give a shout whenever I'm ready. I was getting ready to proceed this summer, finally.

Now, sadly, that is not an option with his passing. I would prefer that bike frame over any frame, at any price, regardless of resources. Hands down and without question.

Reason is an emotional connection with the timing of the initial order, which marked a particularly important point of time in life.

And so the world keeps turnin'....

I built my dream bike last year. It's a Peugeot Super Competition that I lusted over as a 15 year old kid. That bike was it for me!

For a modern bike I had the 333fab built. Every time I ride it I'm can't see any other bike I'd replace it with.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190612/2c8ff6686abacc7623ee0b8ffafa9469.jpg

Whats that saying..... Imitation is the best form of flattery??? Modern version of a true classic!

To throw another monkey wrench into this discussion, from a collectible standpoint, I'd want a bike that Eddy Merckx or Greg LeMond raced on for any of their big wins. For LeMond, the top choices would be the bike he used for the iconic photo with Bernard Hinault, his TT bike from the 1989 tour or a world championship winning bike. Another one that would be super awesome would be Andy Hampsten's 1988 Giro bike.

For the folks who have never heard this....Peugeot had a small frame shop within the big bike factory compound that fulfilled orders for the pro team..and then a very limited number of custom orders for other customers. They were built exactly as per the team bikes, by the same people and with essentially the same components with the only substantial differences being gearing and fit parameters. When you actually go about looking for one of these bikes, you get an appreciation for how scarce they are on the ground. I searched for a decent one (or at least had my eyes open) for one in my size for over 30 years. The real bonus? They ride spectacularly...

Likely a No. 22 Great Divide (https://22bicycles.com/products/great-divide-disc-made-to-order) or a Moots Routt 45 (https://moots.com/bike/routt-45/). Pink, pink/purple, or blue finish on the #22, Skyline or rose or blue ano finishes on the Moots. The #22's stock Di2 builds appear to come with Boyd carbon wheels, and I'd probably set those up for gravel racing and maybe get a set of alloy rim wheels for regular use. I'd probably get a set of alloy tubulars for CX, although I could be sold on tubeless for CX. Or consider a Kent Eriksen.

Alternatively, I'm not sure which current steel builders I'd go for. I'm not 100% sold on Speedvagen, but they'd be on the list.

There's already one mostly road bike in my stable, a 2007 Vanilla roadie. At the time, I asked for clearance for 25mm tires and fenders. It turns out that 28mm tires on wide rims are doable. It's obviously a rim brake bike, which does limit where I could go with it just a bit. It brings me joy every time I step on. So, the original question is a bit of an academic exercise. If I were starting from scratch, I'd go with just one super fancy gravel bike with disc brakes, and ride that everywhere from road to off-road to probably even cyclocross - my Gunnar Crosshairs is basically a gravel-like geometry, I think, and it doesn't limit me at my level. At some point, I'll probably be annoyed with the cantis on that bike, and I'll sell it and get a disc bike.

For all the times where an excellent, refined and premium production bike would need a very weird stem or some other unsightly hack to fit me reasonably well in a not-ideal size interval, I would have that bike made-to-measure special for me, starting with a 55-ish Specialized Tarmac SL6 disc, maybe an Open U.P. MedLarge, etc.

And this bike would adjust its dimensions daily to suit that day's whim if I felt like getting long and low or sitting up high, always with the most proper arrangement of spacers and stem.

I like that Crumpton T5 disc too, with AXS.

Cool.

How would you tell this apart from "regular" peugeots ?

There are quite a few things, but here are some key ones:
*From a distance you can always spot the Reynolds "Continental" fork blades (rounder in cross section like Columbus)
*The rear dropouts are drilled on the wheel interface section
*The build quality is generally pretty high and nicely finished
*Instead of a model name they have a 'Prestige Peugeot" decal on the top tube (there are a surprising number of fake ones)
*They are rather light as they were normally built with lightweight 5/10 tubing (7/10 was regular for Reynolds 531 DB) and on request with 3/10 tubing
*The models for centerpull brakes in the 70's had brazed on brake pivots
*A fair amount of extra chrome which was of a very high standard as was the paint quality...
* They all came from the shop with a Dogwood plug/reinforcement inside the bottom of the steerer tube (How Euro-pro is that?)

Very cool bike, BTW. Excepting time trial equipment, it's amazing how bikes haven't gotten any faster (as if a bike can be fast without a rider) for YEARS...In some ways they have gotten more convenient with integrated/indexed shifting, clipless pedals, etc....but no more efficient in a meaningful way. I also like to take out vintage (for me, 1980-90's) bikes on rides, especially if the younger guys are there. I try to answer questions about them in a deadpan way...Q:How many gears do you have A: It's the latest thing....twelve speed....Q:That bike is old...Isn't it? A: Everything you see here is old (including me)...

I think I have changed - just a little bit. I think I want 2.

1. Hors Categorie (DKS) rear stays, but with the geometry I have on my custom Kelly Bedford touring bike - with room for 35 +/- tires. IF there is a way to do disk brakes, then disk. I don't think it is possible with the DKS stays. That's fine, the ride is worth it.

S&S coupled - and set up for electronic shifting, internal cable routing. Front triangle carbon/Ti (think Ottrott).

Bike 1 - S&S as above.

Bike 2 - same geo, but incorporate X-35 'brains' and button to top tube, and have a connection by water bottle for battery. With wired head light and tail light. No internal battery, and a rear hub powered wheel - for when the mood strikes. Just a water bottle battery - plenty to do most of what I would want to get out of it. This, of course, is a total waste - but it would be fun.

The reality is I own the bike I consider to be 95% of what I lust for. I have a custom DKS S&S tweaked by K. Bedford. I just wish it was able to take wider tires. 28 is as wide as it can go... some brands... Still the best ride I have ever owned or ridden. Ever.

I do not have a specific bike. However, It would definitely be a top of the line road bike with Columbus SLX tubing, Dura Ace components, clearance for up to 32mm tires, bars and saddle parallel, high grade clincher wheels and tires. Also a really nice paint job, nice and classy, not too tricked out. Maybe a metallic blue or a glossy brass finish.

Mine would still all be pretty functional/workmanlike, if elegant.

- A Seven Ti FS would be the fanciest, $$$$est

- A lugged road a la Sachs, Jeff Lyon, etc. -- maybe even a light tourer

- A bar bike

- Would keep my serotta cx and Cielo SSMTB (which might become a ti ss, ht mtb over time.

All built with great, but not shi-shi parts.

I recall reading Nagasawa is not doing track road bikes any more. That's why I told someone that what I really wanted was a Nagasawa Road because you can't get one.

Since I'm chiming in, I think my blow the bank bikes are a Crumpton T5 All Road and a Firefly Ti/Carbon. I have also been having lustful thoughts about the Holland Carbon too. Even though this is a cost no object thread, while I think a Parlee Z0 would be pretty awesome, I couldn't rationalize the extra cost over a Crumpton.

I think that other than a possible gravel bike, I may not be getting any more frames until I hit a milestone birthday in 5 years at which point I will get something crazy. Of course, I partly say that to jinx myself so something really great will pop up out there.

There are tons of other bikes I think would be great to have, but one can only have so many bikes and my taste in "nice" bikes has gotten really expensive.

Oh wait! I'm getting one of those. Eventually … :)

For frames not "in the hopper" I've always been intrigued by Demon Frameworks in England. He has a little bit of the "rebel mystique" about him and he had quite a crowd around him at NAHBS in '16.

And since custom frames are also a matter of developing a rapport with the frame builder, I'd love to have Jim Kish or Max Kullaway in my orbit.

Maybe a Pegoretti at this point, Duende or Responsorium, with full DA/Ultegra 11 speed and some nice wheels.

And yearly airfare to cool places to ride it: Dolomites, Provence, Pyrenees, Alps, Tuscany, Corsica, Switzerland,...

Pretty simple. I got VERY sick. Terminal type sick. Went through all the chemo, and radiation my body could take, and I didn’t want my family trying to liquidate all the bikes and stuff I had. 2 Spectrums, Ellis, Sachs, 2 Berthouds, and a bunch more.

I sold off almost my entire estate. Homes, motorcycles, and cars. All of it.

I also went through a lot of experimental treatment type stuff. When that didn’t work very well. The Dr told me it was time for palitive care and hospice and I started to head in.
The Dr called and told my caregiver to bring me straight to the hospital, and there he told me the last treatments were showing signs of working.

In the study I am in, there are five of us receiving this treatment. 4 are in remission now, and my numbers are vastly improved overall. Of course I had the most advance case of things, so...

Anyway, I hope that answers the question.

^^^ hope you continue to respond to this new treatment. I would have done the same with respect to liquidation

I am fortunate to have my dream bike a loaded C64, but the Prova Speciale has me reconsidering my next steel purchase

No worries at all. I’m getting stronger all the time and very happy to say I just bought a bicycle again. Seems I can ride about 5 total miles these days and fully expect that to improve. But this past treatment was rough.

Just glad to be able to think about it.

BTW: This was the last place I gave up on. As long as I could read it and type a message or two, I read it. ALL OF YOU ROCK!

I don't think I spared expenses for choices on these bikes. Each item was chosen based on what I wanted with respect to comfort and performance, but I can't say I forgo something because of expense.

With that said, I would love to get some other variety like carbon someday.

This is the best news I've heard in sometime! Great to hear you are getting better and on bike again!

I was the lucky beneficiary of three of those bikes - the Spectrums and the Sachs. The Spectrums moved on to other Paceliners and the Sachs is being refurbished to make it my own. Each bike was a lesson; the two Spectrums helped me get one of my own, and another Spectrum - steel, lugged pure road bike, no expense spared will arrive soon. I hope it is lustworthy and I will definitely post a picture, and of the Sachs when its done. They are drool and lustworthy to me because the window is now closed for either.

Thanks to all. I mean really thank you.

Day is Done, Ciavete. Record EPS, internal routing.

Pegoretti has never offered internal routing on any frame. Nor have they, to my knowledge, agreed to drill holes for electronic shifting.

Snip: I recall reading Nagasawa is not doing road bikes any more. That's why I told someone that what I really wanted was a Nagasawa Road because you can't get one.

You can get one if you look long enough. Here is mine, a 60cm Nagasawa road.

I've always had a thing for stainless so if going all out I would call Dave Anderson and ask if he could build me disc equipped electronic shifting Signature Stainless 953. Panels would be blue with white outline and bare stainless letters.

I would go crazy with the options.
