some nice woman on a ride last week said she could see my butt crack through the back of my bike shorts. she said there was about a dime-sized thin spot in the lycra. good shorts, one dime-sized spot - do i have to toss them?

found this stuff and some folks say works well on bike shorts. so i ironed some onto the butt crack spot today. let you know what she sees on wed.

I've used those. It was ok, I had to re-iron one patch I did on some Novara tights.

I have had material from an old pair, or pair I did not like so much, taken and sewed over the thin spot by a seamstress on several occasions And it works great.

For the sake of humanity, please destroy the bibs in question immediately. And do not post photos.

Any repair will just buy a little time.
Just sayin

Just get another pair of shorts. Your friends will thank you.

So, I have used that repair kit, and I did not manage to get it to work. That said, the gash in question was right by the chamois. So, there wasn't much free space to put the patch over, i.e. a good part of the patch would have had to go over the chamois. I didn't feel that would work, so I cut a narrow patch that didn't cover the chamois, but covered the area around the tear.

That said, I followed the instructions, and the patch didn't seem to adhere to the non-chamois parts of the bibs.

I could have been incompetent, and that was also a hard area to repair because it is in motion as I pedal. I'd try give this another shot if I had a tear in an area that doesn't see regular motion when pedaling.

YMMV - hopefully for the better.

How old are the shorts, what brand? If they are defective you can contact the manufacture. I had the same thing happen to a pair of Pearl izumi, their higher end shorts. I owned the shorts for three months and rotated with several others pairs when noticed thin spots in several areas. I contacted Pearl and sent pictures, they replaced the shorts, excellent costumer service.
However, If those shorts have done they time, best to just replace than repair.

Relegate them to indoor use when you’re alone in your basement in the winter. If they are that worn, it’s time to retire them.

Buy some extra long jerseys ... and carry heavy stuff (pliers, crank arms, random bolts and nuts) in your pockets.

:)

Burn the shorts. Get new shorts. Don't put your shorts in the dryer.

This thread reminds me of one of my cycling buddies that wore shorts that needed replacing...it took my about two rides before I pointed out he had a pair in his rotation that maybe needed to be retired....most likely not a candidate for patching. Of course when I finally worked up the nerve to say something he wasn’t wearing the pair in question. I can only image the steps he had to take to figure out which pair were the offending ones.

It was a very awkward moment...

I did discover (with the help of his threadbare bibs) that shaving definitely stops below the booty.

I would vote for using them inside on the trainer or simply retire them if they were older. This is definitely an opportunity to treat yourself to a new pair...maybe check out one of the threads on recommendations.

1. buy a few of these fig leaf patches (might as well do the front too)
2. locate them strategically
3. sew them on
4. change your name to eddief mercury

The dreaded Lycra Leprosy. If you've got Pearl Izumi shorts, you should know they have a lifetime warranty and will replace those see-thru leprosodic shorts for free.

Leaving your modesty at the door certainly works at the Army induction center but even at the Cardiac Surgery Step-Down Unit (where it's all sick people doing the mandatory shuffle around the facility dragging their IV poles along with them) the nurses all got their knickers in a twist about gowns not being fastened in the back. Out on the road riding your bike, forget about it: you need new shorts.

I wear threadbare lycra shorts under touring shorts and winter tights.

I think we have all experienced the butt crack terrorist on a group ride. To see that which can't be unseen...

Don't be that guy
(would you wear a thong on the beach?)

If someone is finally letting you know about the thin lycra, it is way past the time for replacement.
Order 2 new pairs and throw this pair away.

Usually this is lycra depredation and is caused by bacteria- But occasionally it does happen in fairly new shorts.
If new, try for mfg. warranty.

The funny thing is that many lycra shorts will turn almost completely transparent, in places, if the sun hits them just right.

I first noticed this on an annual charity ride, and as it's an annual ride with the same route, I am careful to select my paceline partners, both fore and aft, for that segment each year. :)
