Just picked up this "all-road" complete bike today. The only things I need to change are the pedals, seat post, and saddle.

First, some glamour shots.

And then a question. The HT to DT lug appears to have a slight ripple to it. The seller (original owner) said he never noticed it and it must have been there since he bought it. Hopefully, these pictures capture it. Does this look odd? Should I be concerned? Thanks for any input.

Is there a ripple underneath the downtube?

That's what I mentioned in my post.

Looks like a minor paint f-up to me

Or a slight defect in the lug casting...

The downtube would buckle before the lug in a crash, I'd think.

That was quick! Beautiful bikah.. My eyes suck, but I can't see anything in the pics. If you're really concerned, there are more than a handful of builders here in Portland you could reach out to who would probably be willing to take a quick peak and give their opinion on it. Probably easier to diagnose in person than in pics...?

Enjoy!

That's what I mentioned in my post.

You said the “the head tube downtube lug appears to have a ripple”

I’m not asking about the lug I’m asking about underneath the downtube

If you mean the underside of the down tube, no. The only ripple is the one spot on the lug.

In that case I’ll go with above then paint blem.

If it were front end damage you normally see the ripple underneath the downtube

If the lug had a problem the paint and lug work would have fixed it after priming.

To me looks like a deep scratch in the lug.

Ive see cracks in lugs but never one like that, doubt is a crack, to me looks like a paint scratch.

I didn't know Mike D did brazed frames.

Very cool.

I think you are looking at a light reflection in the second pic. The first pic shows it best, it is a ripple/bubble on the right side of the lug.

That's all I got :-)

Oh....if bubble then is a problem with the primer and cleaning of the lug. In other words a paint problem, maybe there's some rust under it too, nothing that a little bit of old sand paper and retouch paint wont fix.

Either way a crack of paint problems you might had to peel the paint off in that area to find out.

ps: if the frame is not creaking then no crack, frame is big, it has to twist something generating a creak while riding.

Looks like a paint-related blem. As long as the bike tracks true put it out of your mind and enjoy that beauty. If really in doubt contact Mike. He's about as nice a guy as you'll meet and I'm sure he can settle your concerns.

scott pal, I do run a foster home for "defective" frames or bikes, in case you need one.

Enjoy your new bike.

Blemish or not (I couldn't see...), between that beautiful fork and those beautiful lugs, I am really impressed with that frameset.

Looks like an inconsequential blemish to me. Enjoy that beautiful bike.

Thanks all. I will report back after I ride it this weekend.

I may stop off in Ashland for the Shakespeare Festival and will reach out to Mike to see if he has time to take a look.
