Luckily no U-locks were involved...

A knife wound might feel better.
Blunt impact with a dull device is more painful. Colin is a good guy. Worth reading his twitter posts.

This is why I use Paragon axles. I'm looking out for the safety of those who ride around me.

Ouch. That rotor slice is brutal too. Maybe I should sell my bikes and hockey gear and take up knitting.

So it must be one of those TA's that stays with the wheel. On a normal TA, he would have gone to the hospital with a frame stuck to him.

Wow, that looks awfully painful! Hopefully there isn't any permanent damage to his knee/leg.

Has me rethinking what position I want my quick release levers to be in now.

Between this and the Junior Roubaix dude, seems that safety is being compromised at the expense of pushing a new standard. Hope they can figure out how to make these things a little less slicey/stickety.

Just install them/set them in the proper direction and it shouldn’t be an issue.

I am guessing the ER Docs at the local hospital were expecting something a little different coming from Lime Rock Park. Usually their stuff is motorsports related.

They're just not choosing to use what is already available.

As above, I have the DT Swiss version, not an issue. I have no idea why you'd need a cam type lever on a thru axle- it's a bolt.

It's not a cam type lever (although some early TA like that on my wife's trek Lush front Fox fork did have a cam). That cannondale lever stuck into his knee is similar to a DTWS RWS skewer except of course there is no axle nut on the opposing end. Having the lever still attached means not carrying the lever or an allen wrnech in your pocket in case of a flat.

Freak accident for sure.

sorry I'm not familiar with what you're describing, and the google didn't help me out, but yes, sure hope it was a freak accident. The DT one I have is removable (as above, so 1 for 2 wheels) wonder how it could be pointy enough to do damage like that yikes, or is it another Cannondale "proprietary for propriety's sake" innovation?

take a look at this video I found
https://vimeo.com/23951270

the DTS quick release uses the lever/handle to screw the QR tight, but there is a spring to disengage the handle teeth from the teeth on the QR end so you can ratchet the handle and then align it to whatever position you want.

In that sense, the cannondale incarnation is not "proprietary", just their take on avoiding carrying a handle or wrench. I dont believe this design is inherently any more dangerous - but yes it does represent something sticking out of the bike with a smaller pointier end. The same design exists rim or disc. I wonder if the injury could have happened had the lever been aligned with the frame or the fork leg?

of course your TA is much cleaner aesthetically,

whats nuts is the determination in the field that better to ambulance the guy with the QR still stuck in his knee hence they pulled the fork out of the frame and detached the hydro hose.

by detach I bet they just cut that thing off... Sucks, he is going to have to re bleed.

Here's what the skewer end looks like - its the same as on my 2018 synapse hi-mod with DA 9120. you can see the pointy shape and how far it sticks out. I have mine aligned with the fork/frame

believe me, I love the cleaner non-handled look but I dont want to spend any more money on this bike than I need to - got a screaming deal on a brand new close out and with the hidden fender mounts and revised geo biased towards race/wide tires instead of jacked up short and tall endurance it's a perfect add to the stable. plus, i was actually able to sell my canti cross bike on CL. shocking!
