I understand he's a sprinter and all but he just looks bloated every time i see him race. he's for sure one of the biggest if not the biggest pro tour rider i've ever seen. anyone care to chime in?

According to his Wikipedia page, he's 5'11 and 172 lbs. That's really not that big. He'd look tiny if he were playing baseball, football, or basketball. On the bike, you're seeing him next to guys who are selected and cultivated to be abnormally small.

Years ago I recall thinking that some of the USPS riders were pretty big - guys like Hincapie and Vandevelde - from how they appeared on the TV and in print pictures.

Then they came to Bermuda back in 1999 for a weekend of racing. Holy Heck were they tiny in real life! VDV's waste was so tiny it looked like you could wrap your hands around it and have your fingers touch. Twenty years later I am still amazed at the disparity in how they were in person compared to the impression I'd formed previously.

Kristoff is not big by any standard measure, I can assure you.

You have to ask his parents.

I'm 5'8" and close to 190 or so. I must look freakish on a bike.

Well, August 2017. He's only in his second season with UAE. In fact, he's as thin as ever with UAE. Take a look at pictures with him at when he raced with Katusha 2012-2017... he doesn't appear thinner. It's context...

Marcel Kittle at 6'2" at 190lbs is the biggest I know of. 14 Tour de France stage wins, dominated 2017 with 5.

Being “ripped” as a tour sprinter is pretty difficult to pull off if it’s not in your DNA. Preserving the muscle mass required for explosive power is at odds with the volume of endurance training needed just to get through a stage in position to sprint. It’s a hormone thing- cortisol response.

A little fat (keyword little) is not only the natural response, it’s probably the wiser/more sustainable choice than walking the tight rope of low body fat, high muscle mass while putting in big miles.

And as others have mentioned, he’s only big by tour standards.

Magnus Backstedt's race weight was 200+

He's been horribly off form for the last two years and dumped/got dumped by his team mid contract.

Sprinters are a strange bunch physically and mentally.

It's pretty well known that Kristoff was struggling with his weight last year and it was costing him results. His team was none-too-happy about it.
