A friend is looking to pick up some HED Ardennes plus SLs for his look 585 but is worried about tire clearance running 25s on wide rims. Anyone running a similar set up?

That won’t be a problem. I have open pave 27 on A23 rims that measure out close to 29 and they fit.

A23 rims here as well running GP 4000 25 mm tires. This is the max I have clearance for. Record brakes are the limiting factor for me.

I have run actual wide rims (the A23 is not a modern wide rim) of 20+mm and a 25mm Vittoria will barely fit with a 20mm internal width. It's extremely marginal.

This is not a bike for huge tires.

This is my recollection from a ride where I tried out this exact topic with a 585 and Shimano 9000 calipers. These are 25mm Vittoria Open CX clinchers on 20mm internal width rims pumped to a normal pressure. Not a lot of room.

That said, these are in excess of 25mm though probably not by much.

This is not a gravel bike but can take 'reasonable' tires. It's ideal for a 23mm tire on wide (20mm internal) rims, which are as close to actual tubulars as I've ever ridden in a clincher.

I've been riding 585s for years and a 25 will fit, but barely, with a wide rim. No more than that.

I believe they are curious about the frame/fork capacity.

I have 25mm Open Corsa CX (tubed) and Schwalbe Pro One (tubeless) on 21mm internal width rims and the LOOK 585 has no issues.

I'd like to try 28mm tires but the 2002 Campy record brake calipers are the limiting factor.

So it really depends on which model of brake they want to use.

Best in mind that the type of brakeset you use may also limit tire size.
But 25s fit fine on my 585.

I have a Look 585. I run 25 tires on wide HED rims and everything plays nicely with plenty of clearances everywhere. 28 tires have little to no clearance anywhere.

Yes, 25s will fit, just not with huge clearance. My recollection is that the tightest spot is at the seat tube.

Plenty of clearance running Conti 28C 4 Seasons on my Ultra with a Record 32h/DT Swiss RR 585 wheelset.
