Thank you to the PLers and all who’ve served the USA! Much appreciated and I’m embarrassed to say often taken for granted.

My great uncle was killed in the Battle of Anzio in WW2. Here's the Purple Heart given to my grandfather - his closest relative at the time of his death.

On this day we mostly think of those who died in war, but others gave their lives during peacetime. A unit that I served in, 1st Bn 5th Marines, spent 6 months in Okinawa and Korea every 2 years. I deployed there in 1987 and in 1988 I left 1/5 for other duties. In 1989 a helicopter carrying Marines from C 1/5 went down in Korea during Team Spirit and 18 Marines and 1 Navy Corpsman lost their lives. I've often wondered that if I hadn't left when I did, would I have been on that helo?

I knew two of those who were killed, Lt. Kevin Wooten and PFC Kurt Decker. I also knew two of those who were wounded, LCpls Ismael Gomez and Sam Pesuti.

Absolutely all my thanks and gratitude to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, to those who have served, and to those who are serving. You help make this the greatest country on earth. Without you folks, we do not have the freedom we so cherish. Thank you. Matthew

unfortunately when I look at my grandsons I don't think that they can even conceptualize this. and that is one of the great problems in today's society imho. just saying.

The young people in today's America have known, by and large, nothing but a nation at war, as we have been since October 2001 and show no end in sight for it. The larger problem in today's society is we seem numb to the idea that the nation could ever be at peace.
