Electric? Acoustic? Brand?

I thought the point of all this was either avoiding or because of not being able to get laid. Being able to play the guitar would run directly contrary to that.

Just started learning at the end of last year with a Squier Telecaster. My wife bought me a Seagull S6 Concert for my birthday and I have barely touched the Tele since. I enjoy both but I love this Seagull.

Martins and Yairis.
And Strats and Teles.
I might have a problem.

Not a problem, just good taste! I have a Yairis that has survived forty years of moving around that needs a little TLC--and then my lovely wife surprised me with a new Ibanez acoustic with a cutaway and a pickup for my last road sign birthday.

Haven't played it much--I have forgotten so much, and I find it much harder to hold a tune without sounding like a dying frog...

The best thing though--a musician friend who plays a lot went with my wife to the gee-tar store, and started at one end of the rack and played his way down and picked the one that sounded the best and had good action--so for a new guitar it has a lovely sound.

The guitar I always lusted after though was a Gibson ES 335...

The last guitar that I can recall having was a 67 Gibson ES 330. That's been awhile. Switched all of my disposable income from guitars to bikes since then.

1982 Fender ‘62 Telecaster Custom Reissue I‘ve had since it was new. I let go of most of the other stuff and haven’t played in years, but it’s something I hang onto. Majoring in music 30 years ago killed my passion for it, and I still haven’t recovered.

For electrics I have a '69 ES-335 that I've had for 25 years and a Fender Lead III (my parents bought it for me when I was 14) that I've had for 35 years.

For acoustics I have an old Alvarez (actually, not sure if I still have it - it's been out on loan for 5 years or more) and a Seagull S6.

For amps I have an old silverface Super Reverb and a Princeton Reverb that just sit in a closet.

Only the Seagull really gets used these days.

Just one these days. A pre-CBS (‘66 or so) Fender Jazz Bass. I break out an old Ampeg B-22 tube amp from time to time to see if it still works, but usually mess around with a little Orange practice amp.

It doesn’t get played much these days since my trigger finger flared up, sadly.

Naahhh- just a wish/dream list :)

Actually, went through a period of buying and selling dozens of high end and or vintage guitars/amps. After realizing all the $ tied up, guitar cases taking up way too much room, and feeling unworthy after watching the thousands of amazing players all over YouTube :D, finally got the GAS (gear acquisiton system) out of my system and have thinned the herd down to a couple of basic Taylors for acoustic and a Tom Anderson Cobra (tele style) and a Rivera 30 amp.

Hey, sounds like a similar pattern with bikes - LOL! :D:o

Pretty simple really... The majority of bands can’t make a living anymore off of selling records. Advances went from being in the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands... to just getting some swag to sell on the road.

Sure there are folks still selling records, but it’s no where near the market it once was. This fall off in turn bankrupt the majority of recording studios and all those revenues streams such as pro audio equipment manufacturers. Add to that the advent of digital audio and now many hit records are made using pre-recorded samples in some artist’s living room.

Most folks I know are just breaking even making their money off of playing out. But the industry is nothing what it once was. End of rant.

Fulfilled a childhood desire a few years back and started learning the Guitar. (progress is - ehm, a bit slow...)

Made my way up from a Squier Affinity Strat ("Fender SQ" now) to a nice Epiphone LP Standard Pro and a Harley Benton PRS copy, and i added a Gretsch Electromatic centerblock (think its a 5622) for good measure. Also got a Warwick short scale bass on a sale, its a nice piece!

No nice amp yet, i use the computer as of now.

My main instruments are my Les Paul and my 50th anniversary (1997) American made Stratocaster. For acoustics I have the Martin D-18 and a Hofner classical guitar. I have an Ibanez Les Paul clone that is about 10# lighter than the real one.

A few months ago I set up the Les Paul a very heavy set of strings (the package says "Not Even Slinky"), .012 E up to .056 at the other end. I normally play the Strat with a regular slinky set when I play with my friends.

So a couple of months of practice, scales, scales, scales on the heavy set of strings, and the regular slinky set feels like it's not there. When I bend a string, it wraps all the way around the neck.

The effect of this practice has been amazing. My fingertip callouses are like leather. Now the heavy set of strings feels "normal," and of course you get more tone from them, so I will probably start playing the Gibson with the heavier string set as my regular guitar.

Guild Mark III classical -64'

Alvarez Yairi DY74c - 92': was my first nice guitar, though probably moving to greener pastures soon as I rarely play it.

Breedlove C5- 95': still my favorite acoustic out of anything I've tried.

Yamaha- cheap acoustic to teach with at school and not worry about.

I've had a few other instruments over the years but this is what remains. Doesn't include the various violins, violas, flute, clarinet, trumpet, ukuleles, and scores of hand drums (djembes, cajon, conga, etc) and percussion instruments as well. The Yairi will likely get replaced with a Michael Kelly Hybrid electric sometime in the near future.

Legend has it that Layla was at least partially recorded through a miked, 5W Tweed 5F1 (Champ) with an Alnico Blue. I prefer tube amps myself with the exception (but not always...) of pedal steel which typically requires a lot or clean headroom.

Sadly I don't have any Family Photos of the bass collection, but since you asked (all strung up with stainless steel roundwounds except where noted)

- 1988 Modulus Graphite Quantum-6 SPX ...fretted six-string tuned BEADGC with a bolt-on carbon fiber neck, two EMG J-type pickups, ACG/East EQ-02 active filter preamp, Kahler bridge, alder body w/ cocobola top

- 1982 Steinberger L-2 ...monocoque neck-thru carbon fiber four-string with two EMG humbuckers and the whole proprietary double-ballend bridge/tuning contraption

- 2007 Rob Allen MB-2 ...fretless five-string tuned BEADG w/ chambered swamp ash body, figured maple top, bolt-on maple neck w/ ebony fingerboard, no magnetic pickups (!) just a Fishman piezo pickup, nylon tapewound strings

- 2010 Schecter Stiletto Studio 8 ...fretted eight-string tuned eEaAdDgG (octave courses), maple & walnut neck-thru, mahogany body wings w/ bubinga top, two EMG Hz soapbars, cheezy 3-band EQ preamp

- 1983 Schecter Venus ...fretted four-string Jazz Bass clone w/ bolt-on bird's-eye maple neck, ebony fingerboard, two passive Monstertone pickups and Schaller bridge

- 2009 Lakland Skyline 55-02D ...fretted five-string tuned BEADG with bolt-on maple-on-maple neck, swamp ash body with figured maple top, two or three Lakland LH-3 pickups depending on how you think of them, LH-3 3-band preamp, and that hideously ugly stock Lakland oval bridge

- 2019 Warmoth P Bass ...fretted four-string with bolt-on Brazilian Ebony neck/fingerboard, swamp ash body, one Lindy Fralen split-P pickup, Gotoh bridge, strung up with flatwounds for that classic old skool Precision Bass thump

- impossible-to-date Warmoth Frankenbass (<1996 neck on a ~2014 body) ...fretless five-string tuned EADGC with bolt-on maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, alder body with figured maple top, one Bartolini quad-coil soapbar pickup, Bartolini 3-band preamp, Hipshot Type A bridge, strung up with groundwound strings

Yes, fine guitars in the hand built, custom spec, super strat, tele style boutique category.

Also, offshore, off the shelf offerings at lower price points.

If you are exploring in this guitar space, would be worth your while to shop and check out Tom Anderson guitars.

Note: John Suhr and Tom Anderson are good friends and don't mind promoting each other :)

2012 Otto D'Ambrosio custom 17" archtop. My main gigging guitar these days. Easily the nicest instrument I've ever owned. Unbelievable action, fit and finish.

2004 Michael Collins custom copy of Django Reinhardt's Selmer #503. Acoustic jazz guitar. Has the gypsy growl and bark but also incredible sweetness. Awesome living, breathing instrument. Loaded with character and touch-dependent range of tones. Has some quirks.

Dell'Arte Homage; a very nice American made copy of a Favino, which is a larger bodied gypsy jazz guitar. More vanilla sounding acoustic jazz guitar; more American-sounding. Very even.

Castillo negra (nylon string negra flamenco). Don't play really at all.

1968 Fender Stratocaster I got in 10th grade. Had it's place in my rock and roll days. Would sell but not original enough to make it worth it.

1980's Taylor 810. A battle axe for sure. Very nice sounding. I think were the first production scallop-braced guitars.

Yamaha APX 10. Electric acoustic. Used in my solo/duo/trio bar gig days. Would sell but not worth it.

Other notables I've owned
Collings herringnone D28 clone; Brazillian b/s Adirondack spruce top. Was my "grail" bluegrass guitar. Sold but did not regret despite it being probably the only Braz Martin/Martin clone I'll ever own.

G and L Tele. Les Paul or Tele sounds. Awesome and versatile.

McIlroy; a Lowden-type guitar. Ostensibly for Celtic but sold.

1970's Martin D28. My first Martin. Totally unremarkable in every way.
70's or 80's Martin D35. Had nice bass but otherwise meh.

Santa Cruz OM (about 25 years old -- I'm the original owner, and way more than 25 years old myself)
Martin CEO7 (one of the earlier ones, with Honduran mahogany b&S, not that there's a darn thing wrong with Sipo)
Contreras II — a student guitar, although a good one
Epiphone Sheraton II

The most valuable guitar in the house belongs to my kid -- his grandfather (my father-in-law), now unable to play, handed the kid his '54 D-28 last summer.

Since I build guitars most of the ones in my arsenal I have built myself. I have a few vintage guitars including a Regal made SS Stewart BRW parlor guitar and a Manuel Contreras classical guitar. I also very recently bought a Drednaught from Luthier Don Sharp with BRW back and sides and Bear claw Sitka top and it's by far the best sounding Dred I've ever played.

What bridge is that on the "Strat"?

Looks like a fixed bridge, or just have the tremelo bar off?

Thanks. Electrics are still something foreign to me. Just have my entry level breedlove acoustic that I'm learning on.

The strat type electric could be my foray into electrics, as I like the sound and the options for selecting different pick-up combinations. But the floating bridge is one thing that (as a novice) seems like it could be annoying and not worth the hassle as far as keeping it in tune (if the stories I hear are true). So, fixed bridge stats seem like a good option.

A good set up and string gauge will remove tuning issues. Strats are a solid workhorse.

Think about type and output of the PUs also. That can vary a lot, depending on what kind of tone you're looking for.

- 1996 Modulus Graphite Quantum-6 TBX ...fretted six-string tuned BEADGC with a thru-body carbon fiber neck, two EMG soapbar pickups, EMG BTQC preamp, ABM bridge, unknown body wing woods

- 1982 Steinberger L-2 ...monocoque neck-thru carbon fiber four-string with two EMG humbuckers and the whole proprietary double-ballend bridge/tuning contraption

- 2007 Rob Allen MB-2 ...fretless five-string tuned BEADG w/ chambered swamp ash body, figured maple top, bolt-on maple neck w/ ebony fingerboard, no magnetic pickups (!) just a Fishman piezo pickup, nylon tapewound strings

- 2010 Schecter Stiletto Studio 8 ...fretted eight-string tuned eEaAdDgG (octave courses), maple & walnut neck-thru, mahogany body wings w/ bubinga top, two EMG Hz soapbars, cheezy 3-band EQ preamp

- 1983 Schecter Venus ...fretted four-string Jazz Bass clone w/ bolt-on bird's-eye maple neck, ebony fingerboard, two passive Monstertone pickups and Schaller bridge

- 2009 Lakland Skyline 55-02D ...fretted five-string tuned BEADG with bolt-on maple-on-maple neck, swamp ash body with figured maple top, two or three Lakland LH-3 pickups depending on how you think of them, LH-3 3-band preamp, and that hideously ugly stock Lakland oval bridge

- 2019 Warmoth P Bass ...fretted four-string with bolt-on Brazilian Ebony neck/fingerboard, swamp ash body, one Lindy Fralen split-P pickup, Gotoh bridge, strung up with flatwounds for that classic old skool Precision Bass thump

- impossible-to-date Warmoth Frankenbass (<1996 neck on a ~2014 body) ...fretless five-string tuned EADGC with bolt-on maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, alder body with figured maple top, one Bartolini quad-coil soapbar pickup, Bartolini 3-band preamp, Hipshot Type A bridge, strung up with groundwound strings

That is a great collection. I have always wanted to try a Modulus, but sadly haven't had the chance to yet.

Yes using more springs is a good way to tighten up the trem. But if you really don't like it you can block it off too. Just get a small block of wood and shave it till it fits in between the rocker arm and the body cavity and install it with a couple dots of CA (super) glue. Just enough so you can remove it one day if you want.

there are string-through strat bodies out there.

On the 'Strat' I built there are humbuckers in the neck and bridge position with a single coil in the middle. The three knobs are push pull pots. One coil tpas both humbuckers to single coil, another put's the bridge pickup out of phase and the other one puts the neck pickup in parallel. Then there is a master tone and master volume and the third knob is a blender so I can blend the bridge and neck pickups into the mix. WHen in position #1 for example, the bridge pickup, I can blend in the neck and have a Tele mid position sound. Then with all the series/parallel and phase switching there are all kinds of crazy combinations.

Having said that, 99% of the time I use either the bridge or the neck position :D

For a long time I thought I wanted an "endless combinations" guitar, like that. Turns out I've never really played a humbucker that I liked when coiltapped to a single coil; at some point I put decent pickups in a Tele and that's good enough for nearly everything I wanna do.

Down to four, but have been thinking about another bass recently.

I'm actually a bass player - my #1 is a 1998 Fender Relic Jazz Bass done by Vince Cunetto. Pups by my old friend Jason Lollar. Sadly I wanted to use the paint, what's left of it, as a template for a Ciavete Responsorium from Dario. I emailed him about it, he never replied. RIP.

80's mutt strat, my #1 guitar, in Daphne Blue with some Alnico V pups from Jason, Rosewood neck. Nails the Nowhere Man/Manic Depression chime through my old AC30. A bunch of fuzzes and a Analogman Bicomp. Recommended.

52 Fender re-ish Tele, butterscotch, from 88. Never played the same after i put jumbo frets on it and added active EMGs and a Roland guitar synth pup. Regrettable. My main amp in the 90s was a JCM 800 4x10 combo, called the Country Club, which was a rocking rig in the 90s in Seattle. I should probably sell the guitar, haven't played it in a decade. I wish I still had the amp.

* GF's 70s Yamaha student nylon string. It's my Youtube guitar. Has a very strong resonant frequency at C#, like twice as loud as the other notes. Nylon is fun, especially if you're a fingerstyle bass player.

Yeah coil splitting will never sound like a true single coil. The Lindy Fralin Unbucker is about the best one out there for this purpose. The way they do it is they wind one of the coils real hot so that when you split it goes to that one and sounds more like a single.

My main instruments are my Les Paul and my 50th anniversary (1997) American made Stratocaster. For acoustics I have the Martin D-18 and a Hofner classical guitar. I have an Ibanez Les Paul clone that is about 10# lighter than the real one.

...

What's the vintage on the Martin?

Froggy Bottom H-12. Something magical about the short scale. Had to go to Nashville to discover my holy grail was made on a mountain top in Vermont, despite being named after the Delta bottom land. Managed to get in a double-gap traverse (Brandon + Middlebury) on the way home. The shot is Michael Millard, luthier, after tweaking the truss rod following an especially humid summer.
