I have never used bar end shifters before, but like friction-9 speed DT shifters.
with that in mind, which are the best bar end shifters to use for regular drop style bars?

Agree with SunTour power ratchet. You can also find them branded as Raleigh and Schwinn Approved.

YES and Rivendell Silver use the same design.

My only reservation with Suntour Power Ratchet barcons is the cable pull ratio may be such that you'll have to pull excessive amounts of cable to span a 9 speed cassette.
My Shimano 9 speed barcons work well and are specific to 9 speed cassettes; why not stick with a known working quantity, as I'm sure it will have the same lever travel in friction mode.

suntour ratchet style bar cons pull enough for regular 2:1 ratio shimano type rear derailleurs.

Just as a side note, Shimano BS50, BS64, BS77 and BS78 bar end shifters all come with a friction/indexed setting, and all will pull a 10 speed cassette.

Pretty sure I’ve got a set of these that I can sell.
(I used them with a Campag 8spd medium cage RD and shimano 9 cassette)

Diacompe Ene levers for downtubes or barcon.

Suntour or Riv's DiaCompe are the benchmark in my mind. I have Shimanos indexed nine that I flipped to friction mode and those are fine with me too. I have all three. Fricton only? My preference would be Suntour or the DiaCompes

You can buy a pair of these and use most DT shifters.

Shimano Dura Ace 7700 bar end shifters - they can be switched between indexed or friction-only mode and work very well.

I have three sets of these in use right now. I think I'm addicted
I switched it from indexed to friction once and it was buttery smooth with an older 9 speed Deore XT rear derailleur.
The other two bikes I have them on are 90s MTB drop bar conversions

I have a set on my Hewitt Cheviot SE touring bike, which has 9-speed Shimano XT front and rear derailleurs (triple on the front).

Another vote for Suntour. Absolutely the best friction barends. Plenty of cable pull for 9 speed. Until the advent of brifters, I used them on everything (starting in the mid 1970's).
